The act of terrorism is perceived as a shock and shame to humanity. In the past the world has witnessed massive homicides, some of them are still hovering in the minds of people, especially the tragedy of 09/11 and 26/11. Although, the advancement in science and technology has benefited to the community, there is negative repercussion also, such as the misuse of nuclear weapons, chemical hazards et al. Apart from the death stats and physical injuries, what is more harmful is the social and psychological impact on these victims. Those who suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome have frequent flashbacks of the suffering, such as nightmares, petulance, anxiety, fatigue, absent-mindedness and social withdrawal. One can only curse terrorists, who do not even blink while gunning down scores of innocents. Twenty first century has seen a number of spine-chilling terrorist attacks all over the world. Condemning those inhuman lethal attacks, we list down a few of them.

10. Assassination of Benazir Bhutto:

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto on 27th December 2007 is certainly a black day in Pakistan's political history. Bhutto, who was elected twice as Prime Minister of Pakistan and was the then leader of the opposition Pakistan, when she was shot dead. She was campaigning at Liaquat National Bagh, just after the dispersal, shots were fired and a suicide bomb was detonated. The bombing took the lives of twenty-four other civilians. Reportedly, Al-Qaeda commander is said to have claimed responsibility for the assassination.

9. London Bombings:

On the fateful morning of 7th July 2005, four bombs exploded across the city, three in London Underground trains and the fourth one on a bus in Tavistock Square. Again, after two weeks, on 21st July, 2005, four other bomb attacks paralyzed the functionaries of London’s public transport system. The attacks occurred in the afternoon at Shepherd's Bush, Warren Street, Oval stations in London Underground and in a bus in Shoreditch. Reportedly fifty-two civilians were killed in that series of coordinated suicide attacks while more than 700 got injured.

8. Istanbul Explosions:

In the infamous 2003 Istanbul bombings, four truck bomb attacks were carried out on November 15, 2003 and November 20, 2003, in Istanbul, Turkey. According to sources, 57 people were found dead while almost 700 got injured.

7. New Delhi Bombings:

In New Delhi, on 29th October, 2005, three explosions occurred, leading to a death toll of 62, and an injury-count of 210 people. The plans were laid perfectly, just two days in advance of Diwali, a major festival of India. The bombs were triggered in two markets in central and south Delhi. It is believed that Kashmir separatist group Lashkar-e-Taiba was behind these attacks.

6. Norway Attacks in 2011:

It was two concurrent terrorist attacks against the government in Norway. The incident happened on 22nd July 2011, with a loss of seventy-seven lives. The first attack was a car bomb in Oslo within Regierringskvartalet. The bomb targeted the office block, housing PM Jens Stoltenberg's office and other government buildings.The detonation killed eight people and injured almost 209 people.

5. Dubrovka Theatre Siege, Moscow:

On 23rd October, 2002, some 40-50 armed Chechens, who claimed to be linked with Chechen Separatists, invaded and seized the crowded Moscow theatre. The invaders put to hostage a total of 850, and their main demand was removal of Russian forces from Chechnya. After a two-and-a-half day siege, Russian force entered the building, a struggle followed and a total of one hundred seventy people were killed.

4. The Madrid train bombings:

On March 11, 2004, on four trains in Madrid, bombs exploded. The incident is popularly abbreviated as “11-M.”A total of 13 IEDs had been fitted into the trains. A total of one hundred ninety one persons were killed.

3. 26/11 in Mumbai:

Coordinated shooting and bombing attacks began on 26th November 2008 and continued till 29th November across Mumbai, including "The Taj," and "Trident,"hotel. It killed almost 173 people while injured at least 308. It is said that the attacks were carried out by Islamic terrorists from neighboring country Pakistan. The distressful incident drew widespread condemnation from all around the world.

2. Besan School Hostage Crisis:

In this unfortunate incident, 32 Chechnyan separatists captivated 1,300 children and adults at Besan’s School Number One on September 1, 2004. Attackers demanded that Russia should withdraw its forces from Chechnya.When Russia did not act in accordance with the rebel demands, 20 adult hostages were shot. After two days, Russian special envoy stormed the building, as they did not want to draw their troops from Chechnya. In the scuffle, over 300 hostages died.

On September 11, 2001, twin towers of the United States, the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon, were attacked by al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. The recent increase in crime — kidnapping in particular — has triggered a razor-sharp analysis of past records. And the growing numbers continue to surprise. Many incidents are not even registered by the affected parties as they usually prefer a direct settlement with heir predators. What motivates some outfit to kidnap? The cases may differ from one to other. Primarily it is for ransom, influenced by some political elements, ambitions or some demands being made of through barter system i.e. the hostages could be released in exchange with. Terrorists and criminals both use kidnapping as a tactic to achieve their goal. In total, kidnapping has become more of an industry now. Here we dig some past crime reports and glance through a few cases of kidnapping, which were amply highlighted by the media and caught public attention.

10. Rahul Missing case:

A seven-year-old boy Rahul, went missing from Alappuzha in Kerala since May 18, 2005. Though the local police were investigating the case, they did not find any clue. The case was then transferred to the country's premier agency, Central Bureau of Investigation and is still under investigation.

9. Santosh Mandal:

Santosh Mandal, Rupauli JD (U) MLA Bima Bharti's Personal Secretary was kidnapped from Akbarpur, Purnia on 23rd April, 2013. Later, the MLA accused her estranged husband Awdhesh Mandal of kidnapping her aide. Policed later confirmed the death of Mandal.

8. Alex Paul Menon:

The extremists of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) kidnapped Alex Paul Menon, the District Magistrate of Chhattisgarh's Maoist-troubled Sukma District on 21st April, 2012. The unfortunate incident happened when Mr. Menon, a 2006 batch IAS was returning from a village meeting. His vehicle along with the rest of staff vehicles were stopped by a dozen Maoists at Manjipara village on National Highway 221. Before abducting him, the naxals gunned down the two guards who with were with Alex Menon.

7. NHPC General Manager T. Mandal:

The two engineers, National Hydel Power Corporation, K. K. Singh and T. Mandal, had been abducted from Vaishali district on November 19, 2004. Singh was later rescued. The Lok Janshakti Party MP Suraj Singh alias Suraj Bhan was said to be involved behind the kidnapping.

6. Anant Gupta:

Adobe India CEO Naresh Gupta's son Anant was kidnapped on November 13, 2006 while he was on his way to the school bus. As per records, the kidnappers were riding a motorbike and the one who's riding as pillion, took away the child from the maid on that fateful morning of November 13, 2006. After five days, he was brought home by an auto driver. All accused have been proven guilty, and  have got life imprisonment and now serving in the jail.

5. Rathin Basu:

India head of French MNC, Alstom SA, Rathin Basu was kidnappedon March 15, 2013. He was rescued from Meerut the very next day. Basu was kidnapped with his driver, Ram Babu, from Noida’s Sector 66.

Kannada film actor and singer, Rajkumar aka Singanalluru Puttaswamayya Muthuraju was kidnapped from his residence at Gajanur in Tamil Nadu on 30 July 2000, along with his son-in-law Govindaraju and two other associates. He was safely released s on 15 November 2000, after 108 days of captivity.

3. Dr. Rubaiya Sayeed:

The kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed was strategized by members of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, on 8 December 1989 in Jammu and Kashmir. Rubaiya was the daughter of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the then Home minister of India in the V. P. Singh regime. The kidnappers demanded the release of five of their comrades; the government facilitated their demands and freed the captivated terrorists.

2. The 1994 Kidnapping of Western Tourists:

Four foreign tourists were kidnapped by Kashmiriseparatists on October 20, 1994 in New Delhi. A violent insurgency had been going on in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989. Three among the abducted ones, Paul Benjamin Ridout, Christopher Myles Croston and Rhys Partridge were British, while the fourth, Béla Nuss, was an American from San Francisco, California.
