Top 10 Disgusting Cases Of Racial Abuse

Posted: 20 Sep 2013 06:25 AM PDT

Racism has been a black mark on human civilization. Even today racism can be seen everywhere. Racial discrimination in one form or the other still survives in the psyche of people of every country, religion, color and race. Although it is natural to mistrust people outside of your own community but to form strong opinions about stereotypes and then use them to discriminate and abuse others is real racism. It doesn’t even have to be violent to be disgusting. Whenever someone makes a snap judgment based on somebody’s race they are being racist. The following cases of racial abuse will show the extent of racism that the world has seen over the years.

10. Michael Richards:

Michael Richards is an American comedian and actor that was part of the cast of hit show Seinfeld. In 2006 during one of his stand up shows he shouted racial slurs at hecklers. He talked about slavery and used the word “nigger” multiple times. Although later he apologized for his behavior, this incident marred his reputation and brought to the fore the racism that is still inherent in the society.

9. Oprah Winfrey:

Oprah Winfrey was recently face to face with the racism that still exists in Europe. She was in a shop in Zurich and wanted to see a purse. The salesgirl didn’t recognize who she was and told her that it was too costly and that she won’t be able to afford it. This case is not violent or hateful but shows how the salesgirl made a snap judgment about Oprah’s wealth based on the color of her skin.

8. Anton Ferdinand:

In 2011, in a football match between QPR and Chelsea, Anton Ferdinand was abused racially by Chelsea and England captain John Terry. The racial slur caused a lot of uproar in the media as Terry continued to deny the allegations. Later he was found guilty by the Football Association and fined £220,000 and banned from 4 matches. Sadly racism is more common in football than one would like it to be.

7. John Wayne:

John Wayne, the most notorious right wing American actor, was quoted as saying, "I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't feel guilty about the fact that five or ten generations ago these people were slaves” in an interview with Playboy magazine in 1971. The fact that a star as big as John Wayne had such views just show that old racist ideas haven’t died yet.

6. Miss America, Nina Davuluri:

In the most recent case of racial abuse, Nina Davuluri, who became Miss America 2014, was racially abused on a mass scale on social media sites such as Twitter. Nina is an American citizen who has Indian immigrant parents and became the first Indian American to win the Miss America pageant. Thousands of racial tweets filled the social media calling her “miss terrorist” and questioning her eligibility to be Miss America. This incident has just shown that racism is strong on a large scale among the public.

5. Larry Jacobs:

Larry Jacobs filed a lawsuit against the San Francisco fire department for racially abusing him for years. The abuse started in 2005 when he joined training to become a fire fighter. The abuse was targeted at forcing him to flunk or drop out of the training. When he got injured he was removed from training and put on “light duty” cleaning the kitchen and toilets. He was called “house boy” and was restricted from talking to or eating with the other firefighters. The suit is being settled for $175,000 but the racism will go on.

4. Rodney King:

Rodney King was an African-American construction worker that was brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers in 1991. He was on parole for robbery and was part of a high speed chase at the end of which he was caught and mercilessly beaten by 5 police officers. The whole scene was captured on video and created a lot of outrage in the media. It showed the world how racial inequality still existed in USA.

3. Issac Woodard:

Issac Woodard was an African-American World War II veteran who was beaten by police officers in 1946, on the same day that he was honorably discharged from the United States Army. He was on his way home when he had a slight altercation with the bus driver. At the next stop of Batesburg, South Carolina the driver called the cops who arrested Woodard and beat him up before taking him to the station. He was beaten so badly that he was blinded and lost his memory temporarily. The case was not reported immediately but slowly led to a large outcry in the African American communities.

2. Emmett Till:

Emmett Till was murdered in 1955 for flirting with a white woman. He was only 14 years old. He was visiting relatives in Mississippi when he happened to speak to a 21 year old white woman, Carolyn Bryant. Several nights later, Bryant’s husband and his half brother went to Till’s uncle’s house, took him from there to a barn, beat him mercilessly, gouged out one of his eye and then shot him in the head. They then went on to dispose his body in the Tallahatchie River.

1. Franklin D. Roosevelt:

The President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, signed the executive order that started the Japanese American Internment. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, there were many Japanese living in America and military reasons were sited to contain and restrict them. 120,000 people of Japanese heritage living in America were moved from their homes to internment camps even though most of them were American citizens and showed no signs of disloyalty. When some Japanese people went to court against the internment, the Supreme Court also held up the decision. This just shows how cases of racial abuse are relevant event at national scale.

12 Celebrity Lookalikes Who Appear To Be Unrelated Twins

Posted: 19 Sep 2013 10:54 PM PDT

We love celebrities and celebrity gossip. We love seeing them make it big and we love it even more when they screw up and manage to lose it all. We also love finding people we know who look like a celebrity. But it gets a little freaky when a celebrity looks like another. There are some very close resemblances out there which makes us wonder if they are not in fact twins. Here are the 12 celebrity lookalikes with high degree of facial similarity.

12. Barry Pepper and Jimmy Shergill:

Barry Pepper is a Canadian actor famous for roles such as Private Daniel Jackson in Saving Private Ryan, Jonnie Goodboy Tyler in Battlefield Earth and Sergeant Michael Strank in Flags of Our Fathers. 11. Will Ferrell and Chad Smith:

The first time I saw a video of the Red Hot Chili Peppers I thought why is Will Ferrell playing the drums for them? I found out later that RHCP’s drummer is a different person called Chad Smith but he must be a twin separated at birth because he looks exactly like Will Ferrell. While Ferrell might be a more familiar face, Chad is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and one of the best drummers out there.

10. Kris Humphries and Taylor Lautner:

Kris Humphries of the Boston Celtics looks a lot like Taylor Lautner of Twilight. Both of them look the same, are athletic and have the same stupid grin that girls love for some reason. Kris was married to Kim Kardashian and Taylor is dating Marie Avgeropopoulos which gives them another thing in common; their bad taste in women.

9. Ed Sheeran and Rupert Grint:

Ed Sheeran became famous after his debut album “+” as an upcoming English singer songwriter. Rupert Grint has been immortalized as Ron from the Harry Potter series. Both ginger haired Brits look very similar. They both are of same height, almost same age and have the same shabby haircut. Even their stubble is the same. This led to Sheeran using Grint in his video for the song “Lego House”.

Another comedian that looks a lot like a UFC fighter is Jim Carrey. He looks like Rich Franklin the former UFC middleweight champion. Rich has been nicknamed “Ace” in the MMA community because of his resemblance to Jim Carrey who played Ace Ventura in a couple of films. Joe Rogan even called him “evil Jim Carry”.

5. Russell Crowe and Ben McKenzie:

Ben McKenzie, the guy who played Ryan Atwood in the drama series OC, has been called a young Russell Crowe. The similarity between the two is uncanny and it seems like little Ben knows this as he tries to copy Russell Crowe’s acting style as well.

4. James Dean and James Franco:

James Dean has been an inspiration to many Hollywood actors and every now and then a new young actor is compared with James Dean. But no one looks more like James Dean than James Franco and that is why he played Dean in the biopic, “James Dean”. His role was appreciated by James Dean fans and there is no doubt that Franco is a good actor besides looking a lot like James Dean but the truth is that there was, and always will be, only one James Dean.

3. Elijah Wood and Daniel Radcliffe:

Another pair of twins that aren’t, are Elijah Wood and Daniel Radcliffe. Elijah immortalized the whinny character of Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings series and Daniel immortalized the whinny character of Harry Potter in that series. They both look so similar that sometimes it’s hard to tell if the movie that’s on is Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. They both even played their characters in the same super annoying way.

2. Ronda Rousey and Julia Stiles:

These two feisty girls have to be twins. Even their voice and mannerisms match. Ronda Rousey is the first and current UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion. She has also won an Olympic gold medal and has a vicious arm bar that has managed to defeat every woman she has faced in the first round. Julia Stiles looks like her twin sister and the character she played in 10 Things I Hate About You should have been a UFC fighter.

Top 10 Animal Migrations

Posted: 19 Sep 2013 10:19 PM PDT

Animals around the world take on long journeys that might seem impossible to us. Imagine walking thousands of miles without any maps or navigation tools and then imagine doing it every year. That’s what a lot of animal species do. We all know about migratory birds and for some reason it feels easier to fly long distances but there are other animals and fish that take on treacherous journeys at least once in their lifetime driven by some inner instinct. There are insects that migrate too and take more than one generation to complete the trip. Baffled? Read here to know about some animal migrations that show the awesomeness of mother nature.

10. Tuna:

Tuna are a migratory fish that travel large distances in search of food and travel in large groups. They also are one of the fastest swimming fish in the oceans. In studies done for over 10 years tuna from different locations were tracked and it was found that some of them travel as much as 25,000 miles in their life time. That is equivalent to crossing the Pacific Ocean between U.S. and Japan 3 times in the span of just 20 months.

9. Sea Turtles:

Sea turtles are one of the most fascinating of migratory animals. They have been recorded to travel very long distances in the open sea. Some leatherback turtles were recorded to have traveled 12,000 miles from Indonesia to U.S. in just 647 days. The fascinating thing is that when it is time to mate and lay eggs these turtles automatically find their way back to the same beach that they were born on.

8. Sharks:

Sharks are not thought to be migratory animals but they are. The great white sharks can travel very large distances in search of food. Some great whites have been found to travel the complete length of the Indian Ocean between Australia and South Africa. They made this round trip in a year. Whale sharks also migrate but their migratory patterns are not yet completely understood.

Sharks

7. Christmas Island Red Crabs:

One amazing scene occurs on Christmas Island in Australia during a particular season when the red crabs of the island travel en masse to the ocean to lay their eggs. There are so many crabs in the migration that it seems that a red carpet is moving through the island. Often roads have to be closed in the island during this season.

6. Baleen Whales:

Baleen whales such as the Grey whale and the Humpback whales make very long journeys annually. The grey whale travels as much as 14,000 miles annually and the Humpback travels 16,000 miles in a round trip. In winter they travel to warmer waters to give birth and in summer they travel to the colder waters of Arctic and Antarctic to feed. Other whales also migrate but Baleen whales travel the longest.

5. Dragonflies:

Dragonflies were known to be capable of travelling long distance but their migratory patterns were unknown. Now it has been found that dragonflies make the longest migration by any insect species. They travel 8000 to 12,000 miles from India to Maldives to Seychelles, Mozambique, Uganda and back. They do this in the form of a relay race in 4 generations. They seem to follow the rains from the monsoon season in India to the rainy season in eastern and southern Africa.

Dragonflies

4. Caribou:

North American Caribou form the largest migration in Americas and the longest migration by land animals in the world, covering almost 3,000 miles annually. They travel south in the winter to forested areas and in the summer travel north to superior calving grounds. During the migration the herd can grow to up to half a million individuals which is a number only less impressive than the African Wildebeest migration.

3. Wildebeest:

One of  the most famous animal migrations has to be the African Wildebeest migration. They travel great distances each year in search of greener pastures. The herd has many millions of individuals. They are also joined by over 200,000 zebras and 500,000 gazelles. They are followed by Africa’s predators and crocodiles stalk the waters that they have to cross. The spectacle is one of the most impressive natural phenomena in the world.

Wildebeest

2. Salmon:

The greatest journey is the life of a salmon fish. They are born in the freshwater mountain streams and flow downstream to meet the sea. They spend their lives in the sea and then travel all way back to lay eggs and die in the same stream where they were born. Their journey is incredible because they travel in both sea water and fresh water and manage to swim upstream in fast flowing mountain rivers. They even manage to jump up small waterfalls and do whatever it takes to reach their home. They do all this only to lay eggs and then die as the next generation of salmon start off on their incredible journey.

1. Monarch Butterflies:

Monarch butterfly migrations are the most beautiful spectacle in the natural world. Millions of butterflies travel as much as 4,349 miles across the world. They’ve also been known to cross the Atlantic Ocean. They cover this journey in three or four generations just like the dragonflies. They travel across North America to reach Mexico. They have also been found in Australia and New Zealand.

Top 10 Foods You Should Avoid To Stay Healthy

Posted: 19 Sep 2013 10:10 PM PDT

The new age we're living in is dominated by industrialized food the most. Fast foods lead to a variety of health issues, minor and serious. They use chemicals that can disrupt our hormones and cause cancer as well. If you truly believe you are what you eat and want to live a healthy life, control your food habits now. Here are 10 foods you should avoid to stay healthy.

10. Microwavable Popcorn:

You should avoid eating anything that is cooked or put in a microwave, especially microwave popcorn. Perfluoroalkyl is a chemical used in microwave popcorn bags to prevent the leakage of the grease the fast food wrappers. These chemicals are carcinogenic and damage the endocrine system. They also cause cancerous tumors, thyroid malfunction and infertility in humans.

9. Hot Dogs:

To find out how harmful hot dogs can be, know that a single piece contains 14g of fat and more than 700 milligrams of sodium. The worst, your hot dog is stuffed more with preservatives than pure meat. But if you are a hot dog freak, buy a low-sodium hot dog with real meat.

Hot Dogs

8. Table Salt:

Processed salt that we use is sodium chloride which also includes harmful chemicals like aluminosilicate and ferrocyanide.  Opposite to that, if you can use natural salt (sea salt), it has balanced amounts of sodium chloride and essential minerals like phosphorous, vanadium and silicon. Natural salt with useful minerals is good for health that adds a different flavor to your food.

7. Microwavable Diet Meals:

There are frozen diet meals that claim to be completely healthy and fat free, but reality is totally different. These microwavable diet meals are loaded with sugar, calories, preservatives and sodium. Normally there are 6oo milligrams of sodium in your Macaroni and Beef in Tomato Sauce that you eat in small portions. You could replace such junk with other healthier foods!

6. Processed Meat:

Processed meat contains chemicals such as PAH, AGE and HCA that induce cancer. Also, it is made with the meat of animals that have been given antibiotics and other harmful drugs for growth. These drugs pass on to you through processed meat. Sodium nitrite is also added to these meats for flavor and gets converted into cancer causing nitrosamines.

Processed Meat

5. Canned Foods:

All of us find it highly convenient to eat packed items than to prepare fresh food. Most canned foods contain BPA, a highly toxic chemical. This chemical is linked to neurological disorders, heart diseases, diabetes and reproductive abnormalities. All canned stuff is acidic and it is better to prefer food kept in glass containers.

Canned Foods

4. Stored Pasta Sauces:

These stored sauces are probably the most dangerous food ever. Though people around the world love them, it is true that one-half cup of store-bought sauce contains more than 500 milligrams of sodium and over 10 grams of sugar.

Stored Pasta Sauces

3. Low fat Peanut Butter:

If you love to eat peanut butter use the fat rich form. Though every tablespoon of peanut butter contains 15 grams of fat, still it is healthy fat. Now there are low and even no fat peanut betters and they lay claim of being healthy. However, you should know that rich in fat peanut butter contains monosaturated fats that reduce harmful cholesterol in your body. But once you make into low fat, its natural nutrients are not there anymore. So make sure you use regular peanut butter to stay healthy.

Low fat Peanut Butter

2. Soy:

Soy is the best example of genetically modified foods known till date. This food is found in almost everything from bottled drinks and sauces to baked items and cereals. If you need to use soy, make sure the products you use are organic fermented soy products. Soy is toxic to the placenta and can damage the reproductive system in females.

Soy

1. Sugar:

Here is the biggest reprobate that loves to directly suppress the immune system. Excess of sugar is always detrimental to your health, leading to weight gain and diabetes. It seeps essential minerals from your body and affects hormones. Your body begins to grow unbalanced and ends up in a state of biochemical disorder. A big anti-nutrient, sugar leads to the loss of calcium and other nutrients from human body. Eventually your body compensates this loss by sucking calcium from bones, causing osteoporosis.

Top 10 Ways To Get A Raise In Your Salary Right Now

Posted: 19 Sep 2013 09:53 PM PDT

Salary hike for some employees has become a long life dream as they stick to only ethical and honest means to approach the bosses. No doubt, hard work and performance are the keys to get regular raises, but what about those who wish to bypass these long term investments and want a salary hike right now. Some employees might be working for years, but now, they might find it convincing to join the category of impatient employees targeting instant results. If you are ready to be a game player, then try the following top 10 ways to get a raise in your salary.

10. Get inside the head of boss:

Bosses also have stress and pressures of performance from people supervising them. They prepare plans, strategies to meet targets. If you are good at getting into people's head, then try similar rules to impress your boss. He must be looking for something specific in the herd of employees. If you can appear to be the one, it would be sufficient to grab his attention. Little modifications in the way you have been handling your workplace could work for you.

Get inside the head of boss

9. Bad Performance review; put it on low salary:

Is there anything like a perfect time to talk about a raise? Yes, there is. Apparently, the workplace environment and attitude of bosses differ with each organization. But, to generalize, raising salary means proving your performance. If your boss has asked to see you in his cabin to review your bad performance, then it's obvious that there is going to be an interrogation of why's and what's. If you aren’t a new comer, then this might prove to be a master stroke to induce in your boss's head that you are ready to perform, but your current salary isn’t quite motivating.

Bad Performance review; put it on low salary

8. Create a reason:

It'll be the dumbest approach to ask your boss for raise without giving him a reason. Performance is the major reason, but not the only one in all cases. Before you decide to talk to your boss, you need to be clear about what you'll state in support of it. If there isn’t any reason, then create one as soon as you see an opportunity to do so.

Create a reason

7. Research on negotiation skills:

Those born with the gift of negation skills are like blessed ones. Negotiation is an art and a major factor that decides the probability of success in the attempts you make. It's a well researched subject in the field of marketing. Bosses are negotiable. An in depth research on the art of negotiation skills will surely enhance your approach. It'll boost your chances of raise in minimum attempts.

Research on negotiation skills

6. A demonstration:

New comers should avoid taking such a risk, but if you have been serving for a long time and hold a place that influences the moral of other employees working with or under you, impacting the flow of the company's performance, then plan a demonstration to convince your boss of how it'll be better to give you a raise then lose you. For instance, it is always much trouble for your boss to sanction emergency leaves when your presence is very much needed and any irresponsible behavior might encourage others to question your dissatisfaction. If passive, indirect warnings aren’t working, then you need to go a step ahead and demonstrate your worth.

A demonstration

5. Flirt and flatter:

One big shot, especially for female employees, is to try flirting. That's not ethical, but it works well for those who want to take a shortcut for an instant raise. For male employees, if your self-esteem can be compromised with money, then flattering is entertained by most of the bosses. However, it shouldn’t be a theatrical display of cheap flattering tactics. Bosses aren't so dumb. They know that everything that they say isn’t always right. Supporting your boss in a situation where he has been deserted by everyone would tempt him to win your additional attention in similar circumstance in the coming future. In a way, find the insecurities of your boss and stand by him when he is facing them.

Flirt and flatter

4. Lobbying:

Again, if you are an established employee, but still couldn’t gather enough courage to demand a raise or other polite methods failed, then how about distributing and sharing your dissatisfaction with new comers. If you can create an unofficial union or majority to your side by inducing it as a need to secure the future of everyone, then insecure employees are most likely to join you. No boss would like to prove your speculations right when others are waiting for a verdict on your demand for raise. Everyone is going to face a day when he/she would expect a raise, and would like to see others in their support. Remember, there is a great difference between clever suggestions and ill talks.

Lobbying

3. How you ask:

Maybe your boss was internally convinced to give you a raise and was taking his chance to avoid it, but your approach gave him an opportunity to change his mind. Aggression, ultimatums, and threats should be avoided. Your body language speaks a lot. If you are too pleading and requesting like a helpless, deserted cow, then again you are on the wrong side. You just need to create a balance and keep it positive. It's better to start the conversation saying how much you like to be the part of the organization and the supportive nature of your boss instead of talking ill of company policies. It'll be better for you to introduce the need to make some reforms in your financial life. Bosses don't like disrespect or excessive demands.

How you ask

2. Be consistent, be prepared for rejections:

If you aren’t good at anything that we mentioned, then you need to be resistant to the discouragements you are going to face by the continuous rejections of your pleas for a raise. Be prepared for rejections, be consistent in your approach, and grab your boss every time you get an opportunity to talk to him alone. Stick to your agenda, but don't make it extra irritating.

Be consistent, be prepared for rejections

1. Ask for one:

If you have been working hard for years and are convinced of your performance, but never received your dream package while newcomers are getting comparatively better salaries, then most likely you did not ask for one in a hope that someday your efforts will be noticed and awarded. That's a crap. Why a boss would spend extra on a cow when he could milk her without any demands? So, just dare to ask for one and let your boss know that you woke up.

Ask for one

6 Ways Religion Promotes War

Posted: 19 Sep 2013 09:15 PM PDT

We all have a religion. Be it the one we are born into or the one we choose to embrace out of love or strife. To most men religion is important, albeit to varying degrees. Even those who care not about it, a religious identity cannot be wished away that easily. The name, the culture, the ethics, the socio-political scene all come tied up with threads soaked in too many givens, the most important one of them being religion. When we think of how religion promotes war, the following 6 ways stand out:

6. Preach absolutism:

Often, religious tenets preach a black and white approach to understanding life. When you see everything through the eyes of a religious follower, you become blind to seeing and accepting anything that does not follow the same principle of faith as you do. In turn, you are less able to see things from another's perspective. And when you cannot understand the other mind, you will not feel any compassion for that fellow human being either. This is likely to make you do the other more harm than good.

Preach absolutism

5. God cannot be wrong:

When you believe in the doctrines of a certain religion so strongly, you will draw sanction for your actions through that very belief itself. You will convince yourself that your God cannot guide you wrong and since you follow him so religiously, you cannot be doing something that does not have His sanction.

God cannot be wrong

4. Protecting our Gods:

My God is better than yours. And since He is my almighty, I will do anything to keep his image unsullied and my faith in him unshaken. We try to protect our Gods from being disrespected by those who do not follow the same religion as us, we revel in intolerance which escalates into war every time the idea of being wronged spreads base. We convince ourselves that we are simply protecting the images of our Gods from worshipers of another God, enough to consider them an enemy to our faith.

Protecting our Gods

3. Sacred texts interpreted:

While none of us living today were alive when the sacred texts of the various religions were written, there are enough of us around now to interpret them, as the situation or the community demands. With a multitude of interpretations being passed off as codified truths and the true messages of love, tolerance and peace contained in them being silenced, the idea of war often finds sanction thorough the "hand" of God Himself and from within his own chronicles, no matter how far removed the execution of His thought maybe from what He really intended them to mean.

Sacred Texts Interpreted

2. Religion divides society:

Religion is one of the biggest reasons behind drawing lines of difference between various sections of society. It gives a Christian reason to believe that he is different from a Jew, a Hindu from a Muslim and a Sikh from all others – erasing all ideas of sameness that we enjoy by virtue of being humans first. Hence, a spirit of other-ing is generated, with comparisons and one-upmanship over the neighbor following close behind. Living based on points of difference rather than sameness create intolerance for those who practice a different faith.

Religion divides society

1. Defense of identity:

Every religion preaches its own set of "rules and rituals" which become a part of our identity enough to make us believe it is something inseparable from our very being, something we are born with and without which we will be left rudderless. When a concept forms the basis of our identity, or is identity itself for some, it is but natural that it will be defended by us with all our might. War is born out of defending our religious identity, collective or individual, since that means more to us than humanity, sometimes.

Defense of identity
