The battle, fought between the Pakistani offensive forces and the Indian defenders at the Indian border post of Longewala in Thar Desert of Rajasthan, was the first major engagement in the Western Sector during the war of 1971. In the battle, not only were the assaulting Pakistani attack foiled and dented, the Pak forces were forced to withdraw when India launched an offensive attack against them. Thus, winning the decisive battle that changed the face of the Indo-Pak war forever. Seeing the column of 65 tanks close in on the post, Indian defensives laid anti-tank minefield to buy time for themselves. Indian's held their fire until the Pak tanks were15–30 metres from them and then they launched fire with their PIATs (Projector, Infantry, Anti Tank). Although badly outnumbered, Indian troops did not let the Pakistani army advance freely in the open terrain on a full moon night. They held their strong defensive position until the break of dawn when reinforcement arrived.
4. Unmatched fire power:The Indian contingent without the artillery to match the enemy, and being seriously outnumbered, managed to put a strong fight against the Pakistani army and managed to keep them engaged at a fair distance from the post until the air cover arrived and demolished the enemy like never before. Chandpuri and his men only had a section of MMG's, 2 Recoil-less Gun detachments and 81mm Mortars with which they kept Brig. Tariq Mir-led army of 2000-3000 Pak soldiers equipped with 50+ Sherman and T-59 China made tanks at bay for good 6 hours of the night.
3. Fighting the odds:Major Chandpuri had demanded aerial assistance from the Indian Air Force, which sadly turned down the request because they did not have fighter jets with night vision in the fleet. This had left Chandpuri and his battalion of 120 odd soldiers (comprising 23rd Punjab Regiment (Sikhs) and handful of Indian Border Security Force (BSF Rajputs), to defend the post of Longewala despite heavy odds from the strong Pakistani Army of 2000-3000 men. The Indian troops battled the Pak army with all their valor and held the Pak army at bay all night before the Indian Air Force arrived at the break of dawn.

Depicting exceptional courage in the face of adversity, courageous and determined Chandpuri decided not to back out and running from one bunker to another he inspired his men to beat back the enemy.
