Posted: 12 Feb 2014 08:15 PM PST

Two Russian climbers, Vadim Makhorov and Vitaly Raskalov, did something which can’t be done by Spiderman, Superman, Batman or any man in a single take.

With head-mounted cameras and without any safety equipment, these ‘urban ninjas’ illegally scaled the under-construction Shanghai Tower in China, which stands at 632m woozy height and is by the date, the second highest building in world after Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

7 Survival Tips If You Are A Woman And Moving To Delhi

Posted: 12 Feb 2014 06:30 PM PST

Moving to Delhi is no joking matter and do not even try to make it one. When you write about Delhi, you call a spade a spade, there is no beating around the bush and you have to be as real as you can be. It is a conscious decision which parents and individuals have to take about their wards safety, after carefully measuring all factors involved. Don't wait for a revolution to happen or the administration to become your guardian angel overnight, take onus of your own safety. Please a give serious thought to the following points.

7. Take safety in your own hands

Enroll for classes that teach self defense and guide you for any trauma situations. There are lots of organizations which also give this training for free. Krav Maga, is a specialized training course that has been found to be very helpful in dealing with all kinds of violent attacks. The purpose of these courses is to sharpen your instinct, make you strong and create awareness of your surroundings.

self defense

6. Invest in a weapon of defense

As scary as it may sound, carrying a pepper spray at all times in your bag, should become a way of life in Delhi. It's easily available at all chemists and not very expensive too. A small knife can also come handy or even a nail filer can come handy to poke out somebody's nasty eye. The critical thing is to keep it handy when travelling alone, also do read the instructions on how to use it first. Always be alert and train yourself to improve your reaction time, it is your virtue on line after all.

5. Train your gut

Every woman has a well developed sixth sense, when in Delhi put it in a state of overdrive. Listen to it at the first instance of danger and walk away from it as quickly as you can. When in Delhi, and you'll find scores of women vouching for this theory, when your gut says this man is trouble, then he most certainly is. Please be safe, not sorry. Do not over estimate yourself, and don't let overconfidence ride your decisions. Going out late at night, taking dark alleys for a shortcut, asking for a lift from a stranger, are a big NO.

well developed sixth sense

4. Rent a house

It's a mammoth task, but needs to be executed as soon as possible. You have to have a nook or space to call your own, to feel that sense of homecoming after a long day. It won't be easy and will really test your patience and talent for bargaining. Avoid property agent for there are many sites that provide you with ample information to choose from. If you really need to hire one then only promise him 15 days rent as commission. Be wary of slimy men who are over eager to offer you their home and don't jump at the first deal you get. Do the house hunting in the day and be sure to notify somebody of your whereabouts.

sense of homecoming

3. For PDA we are still Old Delhi

Delhi has a very twisted mentality when it comes to sensitive subjects like love, friendship or modern lifestyles, which the Gen X is eager to follow. Public displays of affection are still not seen in a healthy manner and a simplest thing like holding hands in most areas might invite a dirty remark or a cheap line from a Bollywood item number. Try it once, to just get the dirty Delhi experience firsthand.

dirty remark

2. Travel by Metro

The Metro till date has not reported any untoward incident towards women on it. We give it a clean slate for making travelling in Delhi safe and secure. Be doubly sure and only travel first class, or for women coach only, right in front. Most areas are connected by metro in Delhi now, and further have clear designated auto and bus stops outside the stations.

1. Discover the Delhi belly

The major highlight of Delhi that might cheer you up is the endless options of eating out you have there. You can actually try some or the other type of street food daily, without repeating it for over a month at least. Dilli khanewalon ki hain, is very true in every sense. Keep your ears open to eating joints, or check out a good site for exact locations and prices. When venturing to eat in Old Delhi, preferably move in a group and not alone. Dress up modestly and stay calm when you see the hordes of people everywhere.

7 Amazing Songs Of Raj Kapoor Voiced By Mukesh

Posted:

Melancholy in the most undeniable form is how Mukesh's voice can be summed up. It is a well known fact that Raj Kapoor had an eternal bond with Mukesh and on his death had remarked that he had lost his soul. The pair has made some priceless pieces of music that continue to lighten our hearts and feed our soul with music in its truest form. When you listen to their songs, the mind relates to them as one entity, so in tuned with each other that separation is not possible. Tune into the 7 most amazing songs ever sung by Mukesh for Raj Kapoor, the showman of the Millennium.

7. Mere Toote Huye Dil Se (Chhalia, 1960)

This super hit song was from the movie Chhalia, starring Nutan, Raj Kapoor and directed by Manmohan Desai. This song depicts the state of a heart broken lover, who has failed to win the attention from his lady love. A little know fact is that Mukesh had eloped with his wife Saral Trivedi, as both their parents were strictly against their marriage. The music legend used to stand outside her house in the rain all night.

6. Dost Dost Na Raha Pyar Pyar Na Raha (Sangam, 1964)

A very bold movie for its time, Sangam was based on a love triangle, enriched with doubt and mistrust. Performances by actors like Rajendra Kumar and Vyjayanthimala were exceptional and still remembered. In this song you can get a feel of the real artists and orchestras that were used for giving music in movies of yesteryears. Listen carefully and you can hear the pianos, the exotic bass guitars with the violins playing.

5. Duniya Bananewale (Teesri Kasam, 1966)

Teesri Kasam, was way ahead of its time and had an undercurrent that the general masses could not connect to and it failed miserably at the box office. It had Raj Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman in the lead roles and was directed by Basu Bhattacharya. The song has so much relevance to the lives we are leading in present times. Raj Kapoor will be immortalized for playing the role of a messiah of social change, by the medium of movies. Rajji was Mukesh's best buddy and always stood by him in good times and bad. Mukesh had a firm belief that to do justice to a song you have to feel it from deep inside.

4. Kisi Ki Muskurahaton Pe Ho Nisar (Anari, 1959)

There is nobody alive (I bet!) in modern Bollywood who even comes close to the performances of Raj Kapoor and Nutan in Anari. The music for this movie was composed by Shankar Jaikishan & Hasrat Jaipuri, who were instrumental in composing hit music for almost all of Raj Kapoor's movies. In some movies if Rajji was spreading a social message in others he was playing the advocate of universal love.

3. Awara Hoon (Awaara, 1951)

Mukesh was often called the aam aadmi ka singer, or the singer for common masses. So massive was his fan following that Awara Hoon, has been recorded in 14 different Russian dialects. It has become a custom to play Mera joota hai Japani and Ichak dana at all weddings there. This super hit movie was directed by Raj Kapoor, and has some of the most hummable numbers in its album. When Mukesh passed away on August 27, 1976, he was supposed to perform with Lata Mangeshkar, in Detroit USA. He died from a heart attack, the fifth one. Raj Kapoor was a devastated man after this loss, it is known that he did not got to the ready sets of Satyam Shivam Sundaram (SSS) for many days. In a most noble gesture, Raj Kapoor postponed the shooting of the climax of SSS, to present Mukesh in a concert in his memory on 10th November, 1976.

2. Jaane Kahan Gaye Woh Din (Mera Naam Joker, 1970)

One of the first massive multi starrers of Bollywood, Mera Naam Joker, was an ambitious project of RK Banner which went on to become one of the best movies of Raj Kapoor. However, it did not resonate with the masses and was a flop in India. It is said that Rajji had to sell or even mortgage his RK Studios at Chembur, for the project. It lacked the Bollyowood masala cine goers had come to associate with his movies. The irony is that the movie ran to packed houses in Russia and made him a household name in a foreign country. This song showcases the acting talent of the master showman that still cannot be surpassed after so many decades.

1. Main Aashiq Hoon Baharon Ka (Aashiq, 1962)

Aashiq, was another memorable gem from Raj Kapoor. He shared the screen with Nanda and the music was given by his favorite duo Shankar–Jaikishan. This song in a light note reminds of the era when music was not made on a digital board, instead real humans playing real instruments. For somebody who started his career as clapper boy in 1943, Raj Kapoor has come a long way to be regarded as the finest actor and director this country has ever produced.

Natural Gas Companies Do NOT Want You To Know These 7 Issues

Posted:

Delhi might have shifted to CNG in one big leap but it is still to be seen if it was a jump towards the future or will it eventually become a stumbling block in its growth. There is a raging debate about the long term side effects of drilling and mass production of CNG. We hope this issue will not be put on the back burner, till it becomes a do or die situation, like many other environmental issues clouding our nation's space. Have a look at all the things you were never told about use of CNG.

7. Horizontal drilling a big NO for the environment!

In the recent past it has been found that it was more economical to drill a well horizontally, compared to the earlier vertical drilling concept. The area of exposure is larger in this kind of a well. In this method of drilling fractures are placed along the location and the method is executed by the 'plug and perf' method, using sleeves. However, after continuous years of drilling in this manner, there is now evidence of groundwater contamination, and serious damage to the environment. Oil companies are keener on horizontal wells, as 30 stages can be achieved by this single well, which was not possible in a vertical one. However, they pollute the air, bring chemicals to the surface, raise the level of CO2 and cause serious damage to quality of ground water.

NO to horizontal Drilling

6. Fracking brings cancer!

Fracking in very simple terms is drilling to release the methane gas trapped in rock formations. An intricate network of vertical shafts that are interconnected with horizontal shafts is drilled in to the ground. Now, enormous quantities of sand, water and chemicals are forced into these shafts to fracture the rock and release the gas. It seems like a convenient replacement for carbon fuels and will eventually replace coal in all power stations. The problem is the method of extraction, in which harmful chemicals like benzene, toluene, naphthalene, and xylene, are pumped into to the ground to push the gas to the surface. This liquid can never be completely removed from the soil.

fracking brings cancer

5. Choose between clean water or cheap gas?

We are still studying the effect of fracking on the groundwater. However, it is confirmed that a faulty well or a spill over can contaminate the ground water resources. The pit of the wells even if lined pose a serious health threat to the people of that neighborhood, the fumes that are let off are harmful to humans and animals. The fracking liquid is combined with the sole purpose of keeping the pipes unclogged at any cost. These chemicals come back to the surface through back flows or well blow outs and leak into the environment. They contaminate the water and cannot be removed easily.

leakage of water

4. Astounding levels of air pollution

Fracking causes emission of harmful gases like methane, greenhouse gases and other organic compounds in the environment. Studies have confirmed that these gases are also contributing to harmful changes in the environment. Laws should be made wherein each operator should be liable to submit a report on the annual release of toxins in the environment.

emission of harmful gases

3. Disposal of waste water a must

The water which is used in fracking contains metals, radioactive materials and other harmful dissolved solids. Most of our municipal water treatment plants are not designed to remove this contamination. It should be the onus of the well operator to ensure proper recycling of this water only after proper treatment. In certain areas it was found that deep injection wells used for disposal of this water, had created unnecessary seismic activity in that area.

wastage of ground water

2. Complete disclosure of chemicals used in Fracking

The operators today are not disclosing publicly about chemicals used in fracking activities. We need a law that makes it mandatory to maintain records at all times and all figures should be available online for all to see.

chemicals used in fracking

1. Alarming facts and figures we all should know

  • Almost 1-8 million gallons of water is required for one fracturing job.
  • The water is mixed with sand and almost 600 types of chemicals.
  • Water leaked from these wells causes respiratory, sensory and neurological damage.
  • The waste water often left to evaporate causes acid rain, contaminates the air and cause ozone like conditions on the ground.

5 Most Popular Bharatnatyam Dancers

Posted: 12 Feb 2014 08:30 AM PST

Bharatnatyam is more than 5000 years old and is a complete science in itself. It is divided in to pure dance or 'NRTTA' and expressions 'NRITYA'. The limitless dimensions are presented in a sculpturesque form that transforms the dancer into a performer beyond definition. The costumes, the makeup, the jewelry and the music create a charged atmosphere that makes each one of us proud of our cultural heritage. The striving art form from South India has seen many stalwarts who have got this art form global recognition.

Let's take a look at the handpicked five stalwarts most of the world thinks are the best Bharatnatyam dancers.

5. Mallika Sarabhai

A well known public figure who is not just an acclaimed dancer, but also an accomplished film maker, anchor, editor, social activist, and an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad. She is a master danseuse in Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi and is a beauty with brains, on a lighter note. Her sharp features and finely chiseled face can never be forgotten once seen. She with a little help from her famous mother Mrinalini, runs the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, where new and budding talents are given an opportunity. Mallika Sarabhai is very passionate about environmental protection causes and has published books on it. She is a headstrong woman, who believes that dance is a language form that is alive. Her energy is infectious and gets her supporters wherever she goes.

4. Yamini Krishnamurthy

Since childhood, Yamini was very keen to learn dance and shifted to Chennai at 5 years of age to pursue dancing. She joined Kalashetra, a school of Dance run by legendary Rukmini

Devi. So strong was her hold over her trade, that her first performance made her a star overnight. She was a known face in classical dance by 1960, touring the world to give performances.

She created awareness for Kuchipudi and received loud appreciation wherever she went. In 1990, she established Yamini School of dance at Delhi, where she imparts her knowledge to young dancers. Yamini-Krishnamurthy

3. Alarmel Valli, 1957

At just 16 years of age, she was invited to perform at the International Dance Festival of the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre De La Ville, in Paris. Such is the glory of Alarmel Valli, that one can write endless words about her acclaim. She has mastered the knack of converting simple grammar into a subtle dance of poetry in motion. It is very difficult to classify her form of dancing into any particular theme, it is classically grounded, yet it manages to blur the boundaries between tradition and invention.

Even a lay person with little knowledge can connect to her dance form and feel mystified in a very subtly sensual manner. The training in music she got from T. Muktha, was influential in evolving a musical style of dancing. Like she always says by having a strong grasp of the history or sahityas, she is able to write with her body and sing with her art. She has performed at every cultural capital of this world. By holding seminars and workshops she has created awareness for Bharatnatyam across the globe. Dipashikha, was founded in 1984, to encourage new artists as a center for performing Arts.

She gave her first performance in 1956, in the world famous "Arangetram."

She studied and researched the Karana sculptures in detail and has also received a Ph.D. for her thesis on Karanas in Indian Dance and Sculpture. So extensive was her detailed study

that she founded an individual style of dancing called Bharatnrityam, based on her founding's. Her main component of dance is its embodiment based on melodies. She has got global fame for her one woman ballets like Ramaya Tubhya, Namah, Krishnaya Tubhyam Namah, Jaya Jaya Shankara and Kuravanjis. She is a unique gem of our country that effortlessly combines a dancer, composer, choreographer, singer, scholar, teacher and author in one person.

Padma-Subrahmanyam,-1943

1. Rukmini Devi, 1904

Rukmini Devi born in an upper caste Brahmin family was exposed to an environment of learning and culture, from a very young age. She got an opportunity to spread the knowledge of Indian cultural values in Europe, while travelling with her husband Dr. George Arundale, an educationist. While learning ballet from Russian legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova, she could identify her passion for dancing. The more she learnt, the more passionate she got about bringing about a revolution in Bharatnatyam.

She has been credited for correcting the theories of dance and music. She laid a lot of stress on the fact that costumes and jewelry should be designed in an artistic manner. Her emphasis was to bring out the spiritual aspect of dancing by laying stress on the correct hand gestures. The charisma in her personality made her attain a niche in Indian classical dancing. She established the Kalashetra, a school for training in Bharatnatyam. Besides creating waves in dancing, she created an uproar when she had an inter religion marriage. There are certain reports that suggest that she was offered the chair of president of India by Morarji Desai, which she declined for the love of dance. She was also the Vice President of the International Vegetarian Union for 31 years, until she passed away in 1986.
