The city of dreams, will know have new set of wings to fly from tomorrow. The ambitious monorail project of MMRDA was started on Feb. 2, 2014. Completion of this project has put us on the world map of countries that have monorail systems for commutation. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has inaugurated Mumbai Monorail today. 7. Background

In 2008, Vilasrao Deshmukh had approved the innovative project of a monorail for Mumbai. Larsen and Toubro, along with their Malaysian partner Scomi, were awarded this project. The complete contract is for 24.6 billion rupees, to be completed by 2029. Construction was promptly started in February 2009, along the first phase, the Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle Route. In December 2013, the first test run was successfully done on the Wadala-Chembur route.

6. Objective

Traffic on the route from Chembur to Wadala is a harrowing experience for every commuter. The traffic on the Sion-Panvel Highway and Dr.Ambedkar road is always on the higher side. Opening of the monorail will cut down the travel time by almost half. Once the second phase also gets operational, Mumbaikars will be able to travel in style and comfort like any other Japanese or a German national. In the early stages the service will be from seven in the morning till three in the evening. Gradually the number of trains and coaches will be increases, after assessing the demand.

5. Infrastructure

In phase1 the 8.8km monorail will be connecting Wadala in Central Mumbai with Chembur in suburban Mumbai. With air conditioned coaches, accessibility with smart tickets, top class elevators and escalators, will take travelling in Mumbai to a different level altogether. All monorail cars have been built in Malaysia by Scomi Engineering, who was awarded 42% of the contract. Each car has a capacity of 568 commuters when filled till the brim, and 852 passengers for a six car consist. Almost 18 commuters can be seated, while 124 can stand per car. MMRDA is expecting 7400 passengers per hour and per direction, that brings the figure to 125,000 people travelling by monorail per day. Within two months of running, the operations will shift to 7am to 7pm and finally from 5am till midnight, in stages.

Commuters please make a note-

  • Seven stations have been listed on the route namely – Wadala depot, Mysore colony, Bhakti Park, Bharat Petroleum, V.N. Purav Marg, Fertiliser Colony, and Chembur.
  • The fare ranges between Rs. 5 to Rs. 11.
  • Commuters can purchases tokens or smart cards at every station.
  • Bus connectivity has been kept in mind at every station.
  • Very soon auto and taxi stands will be set up too.
  • Maximum speed will not exceed 80km/h.
