7 Haunted Places In Kolkata You Should Better Avoid Visiting Alone

Posted:

According to the elders of the society, especially the Indian society, there's a definite age to do everything—like, you cannot play in gully cricket if you're in your 30s or above. Well, these things might take a long time to change; but there are a few things which attract the attention of everyone alike—from an 80-year old grandfather to his 5-year old child—take for example, a visit to a spooky bungalow. Spooky stories about well known public places sell like hot cakes! If you don't believe us, then read on the list about some haunted places in Kolkata —

7. On the Ganges, under the Howrah Bridge

Well, you don't have to jump straight into the Ganges to know about this. According to the wrestlers, who daily practice at the Mullick Ghat and Zanana Bathing Ghat, in the wee hours of the morning, you'd be able to see hands flailing in the water. According to them, those are the spirits of people who gave up their lives, accidentally or by committing suicide, by jumping into the Ganges. Sometimes, it's difficult to understand whether it's a "real" person struggling for breadth or is the workings of some spirit!

6. Nimtala Burning Ghat

Located in Central Kolkata, Nimtala Burning Ghat is one of the oldest in Kolkata, and is believed to be one of the most haunted places around. You can see paranormal sightings here on the night of Kali Puja when the "Shamshaan" Kali is evoked by all in the dark hours of the night. According to a local, on the nights, the "Aghoris" come (their names shouldn't be said out loud, according to the locals) and they feed on the leftover flesh from the burning pyre and use them to evoke occult powers.

5. Putulbari or the House of Dolls

If the name is so spooky, just imagine how creepy the place is going to be. Located at Ahiritola just opposite the vast Ganges, this huge building with dolls of archaic, Roman designs adorning the terrace is sure to send a thrilling chill through anyone's spine just by a look of it. Although this building is still inhabited by some people, no one dares to live in the upper stories of the building, especially post-dusk. And, if you're daring enough to venture into this haunted place, you're sure to feel creepy presence of the unseen everywhere while you're inside the palatial structure. Apparently, this place was originally inhabited by wealthy zamindars who would sexually exploit women in here—and, it is their souls which hover around this place.

4. Lower Circular Road Cemetery

While the South Park Street Cemetery is considered as one of the haunted places around, the nearby Lower Circular Road Cemetery, however, surpasses it. In that cemetery, there's the grave of Sir W.H. Mac Naghten whose body was ripped apart in Afghanistan. Later, his wife had assembled the remaining pieces of his body, brought to Calcutta and buried here in this cemetery. Apparently, if someone narrates this incident near his grave, then huge tree above his grave shivers.

3. Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station

Jumping at the tracks of Metro railways which carries 4000 volts of current seems to be the Suicide paradise of Kolkata—it's been en vogue since the inception of the Metro in Kolkata. However, around 70% of the total suicides have been committed at the Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station. According to the drivers of the trains as well as the daily passengers who get off at the station from the last train at 10.30PM, you'd be able to spot, at the same time each day, eerie unclear figures vanishing into the tracks within fractions of seconds. Well, if you're in Kolkata and in mood of some adventure, try this out!

2. The Royal Calcutta Turf Club—the Race Course

Well, there's a story about some George Williams, a race maniac, whose only love in the whole world was his pearl white horse, Pride. She was the then chain winner of races who'd win wealth, fame and name for her master. However, this "Queen of Tracks", like other living creatures, started slowing down with age, and one fine morning, after losing the Annual Calcutta Derby the earlier day, she was found dead on the tracks. Well, that's not the end of the story, even now, on moonlit Saturday nights, if you pass the race course and if you're looking around, you'd invariably spot a charming white horse galloping across the race course. The locals call her, even now, William Saheb ka sada ghora.

1. National Library

The Main Building of the National Library, which earlier used to be the resident of the Governor Generals of India, is regarded as the #1 among all haunted places in Kolkata. According to the locals, Lady Metcalfe was stickler for cleanliness and hated if someone kept anything out of its own place. Even now, if you visit the library's main reading room, and keep yourself busy amidst a pile of books scattered over, then you'd feel her breath down your neck. Well, don't ignore this; it's a tried-and-tested truth.

How Psychology Is Connected To Science?

Posted:

Science is an intellectual and practical activity that encompasses the systematic study of universe and all of its components through observation and experiment. The word psychology would be roughly translated as to the study of soul or spirit. People who associate science with the experiments conducted in labs, cannot bring themselves to believe that the study of soul to be a branch of science. Psychology was a part of philosophy and biology in earlier days, but it has emerged as a science only 19th century. It was the efforts of Rene Descartes, Wilhelm Wundt and other scientists which established psychology as an independent branch of science. What connects psychology to science? Here are four formidable arguments that securely establish the connection between psychology and science.

4. Characteristics

Psychology is considered to be science, because it empirically observes human/animal behavior, studies it in order to gain insight, describes and explains the behavior and constructs hypothesis from the collected data. The process has all the elements, features and characteristics of science; since the procedure takes place with systematic techniques and findings of observations. Like any other field of science, theories of psychology are based on investigation, experiments, observation and conclusions based on facts collected. The results of a research are published in academic journals, shared in conferences and reviews are sought from fellow scientists over the findings. Hence we can say research and study of psychology has every characteristic of science.

Characteristics

3. Methods

Psychologists do not rely on their own views or emotions when dealing with behaviors and mental processes of humans/animals. The conclusions, diagnosis and criteria for diagnosis are developed through scientific methods of research and experiments. The process of arriving at truth is a systematic process where initially the problem in behavior or mental process is conceptualized or identified. Psychologists study biological procedure and working of human brain to understand the behaviors displayed. They also collect data regarding the influence of surrounding on the behavior. Later several experiments are conducted to collect data and find a solution or explanation to the identified problem on hand. The data collected is scrutinized and analyzed by the researchers. Finally conclusions are drawn on the basis of critical and evaluation of the scientists, statistics and findings of the data collected. The whole process is very similar to any scientific project undertaken in different fields of sciences.

Methods

2. Attitudes

Psychologists possess all the attitudes required to make them scientists. All the psychological research is results of curiosity, critical thinking, skepticism, objectivity and thirst for knowledge on part of scientists involved. Psychologists do not believe in sweeping and simplistic claims on the nature of personality and intelligence, but they take up the challenge of finding and explaining the truth. In order to arrive at a conclusion  psychologists use animal models, typically rats, to study the neural, genetic, and cellular mechanisms that underlie specific behaviors such as learning and memory and fear responses or when it is possible they investigate the neural correlates of psychological processes in humans using neural imaging tools, and neuropsychologists conduct psychological assessments to determine, specific aspects and extent of cognitive deficit caused by brain damage or disease. Psychologists usually facilitate further improvements of their own theories and conclusions by sharing details about their research and its drawbacks with the scientific community.

Attitudes

1. Answering the critics

Often the arguments against psychology as a field of science is based on the criteria that it does not have clearly defined terminology, cannot be considered quantifiable, the experiments are not conducted in highly controlled conditions, absence of reproducibility, no stable predictability and testability of the findings. What we have note here that, psychology is study of humans and not atoms, electrons or minerals which are stable. Human behavior and response are unique to each individual and every situation is different as well. Hence, the flexibility in the field of psychology should be overlooked and it should be accepted as a science. Besides providing solutions to psychotic and neurotic problems of people, psychology has found intriguing clues to changes in behavior of people like the bystander effect, aggressiveness, games people play in relationships, and many more. Considering the social condition of the world today, we can agree that we need psychology whether it is science or not a science more than any other field.

5 Occasions When LAW Was EASY On Bollywood Celebrities

Posted: 17 Feb 2014 12:30 AM PST

Since childhood, through fairy tales, fables and even through detective stories, we've read that Law is same for all. However, living and growing up in India shows most of us a completely lopsided view.

In India, if you're a Bollywood celebrity, no matter how bad or good you act or how good or bad a person you are, you'll be treated like a demi-God. This belief has reached such an extent that actors are actually getting away with everything—even criminal acts. You don't believe it, right?

Then let's go ahead and study some incidents —

5. Shiney Ahuja Rape Case

Remember Shiney Ahuja, the actor who made it quite big with his debut "Hazaro Khwahishen Aisi", followed by "Gangster"? Apparently a "happily married" person, Ahuja was accused by his domestic help on 14th June, 2009, of calling into his room and then raping her. The matter got pretty heated with the media intervening and Ahuja being imprisoned within hours. Reportedly, Ahuja had spent around 110 days in jail before the Bombay High Court granted him bail against a penalty of Rs. 50,000.

However, a little over a year later, in September 2010, the maid took back all the charges at a Mumbai fast track court by saying that all her allegations were false and that he had never raped her though all the DNA tests and medical reports suggest a clear incident of rape. Well, with the celebrities around, can anyone receive any justice, ever?—Nah, not in India.

Shiney Ahuja Rape Case

4. Fardeen Khan and the Drug Dealing Case

The actor-son of the famous actor and producer Feroz Khan, Fardeen Khan was caught buying Cocaine outside an ATM on 5th May, 2001 and was arrested immediately. Khan maintained that he had just "tried" to buy only a gram of cocaine for which law states only a six months' jail (for the first timers). However, earlier too he had been convicted and had even admitted of using cocaine on six to seven occasions to "de-stress" himself. Well, again, since he was a "first timer" (read: a celebrity and the son of yet another celebrity and the brother of yet-yet another celebrity, Hrithik), the matter ceased to gain any more weightage. According to sources, the Mumbai police was pressurized of dismissing the case as one of mere "drinking and driving".

Fardeen Khan - Drug Dealing Case

3. The Blackbuck Poaching Case

This case had not one or two but as many as 5 Bollywood stars—Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Neelam, Tabu and Sonali Bendre. According to the reports, these 5 stars had gone to Kankini village near Jodhpur for shooting a film and had killed a blackbuck deer which is considered as a rare species. The charges were framed under Wild Life Protection Act 1972 and have been related to hunting and killing blackbucks for poaching. However, this was blatantly denied by these "great" actors as a result of which the case is still waiting a judgment for the past 15 years. What's the worth of the life of blackbucks against these great superstars!

The Blackbuck Poaching Case

2. Salman Khan — the Drunken Driver

Well, this "Dabanng" star is known for his bad mouthing and his dark acts as much as his bumper hits. However, one among such array of his stupid acts is the infamous hit and run case where the drunken actor allegedly rammed his Land Cruiser into a bakery, killing one and injuring 4 people in the process. Although he was booked under IPC Section 304 (A) for rash driving, due to lack of witnesses and Khan's claim that the steering was in the hand of his driver, the case is still pending at the court of law—and it's more than 8 years' old now. Well, the twist in this matter is that when the incident happened, 64 people claimed to be witnesses!

Salman Khan - the Drunken Driver

1. Sanjay Dutt's Alleged Involvement in Mumbai Blast 1993

The most sensational case of all, the Mumbai blast case of 1993 came with a flurry of surprises—one of them being actor Sanjay Dutt's involvement with it. Although Dutt was cleared of all the charges after 18 months of imprisonment, he was found guilty of possessing a rifle illegally. Well, we wonder who would keep mum and accept all the "wrong" accusations after spending 18 months in the jail!
