6 Reasons Former CJI Shouldn’t Have Trashed NEET Exam Posted: 25 Dec 2013 05:30 PM PST India is a democratic country where people from all religions, castes and creeds are given the same privilege and amenities sans any discrimination. At least, that's what India is on pen and paper. But thanks to the "leaders" of the country, this equality is but a distant dream to the common people. Take for example the NEET exam or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for the candidates wanting to pursue post-graduation in Medicine. As known, the former honorable Chief Justice of India, Altamas Kabir, had scrapped the exams, apparently for good. Let's look at some reasons why the decision was widely criticized by students, practicing doctors and informed citizens of the country — 6. Common Entrance Exam Could Ensure Merit-Based SelectionHaving an entrance exam results in fair selection of the candidates based specifically on their merit. Whether the students restrict themselves strictly to their syllabus in the UG level or are they scholarly enough to take different challenges get to be known through these entrance examinations which do not strictly abide by any syllabus. Yes, entrance system too has many loopholes; nevertheless, it is also by far the best and most transparent selection procedure. NEET exam was one hope to make merit based selection a possibility (to a great degree). CJI Saheb trashed it, at least for one year. 5. Lesser Burden on studentsHaving a single screening test for students meant that they could just devote all their energies to prepare for a single exam. Had they been preparing for other entrance tests as well, they would have had to juggle between different schedules and choices. Earlier, the entrance exams would be spread over a couple of months or even more, leaving the students gasping for breath and fresh air. Preparing for one single exam would mean lesser burden on the students—they would be able to breathe and, at least, enjoy their lives a bit even amidst the company of fat books! 4. Exemption from Heavy Examination and Other FeesHaving one single screening exam for a pan-India selection would mean paying for only one single entrance examination and not splurging on 100s of other entrance tests. Allotment on the basis of result always implies transparency and hence, a complete exemption from the hefty capitation and donation fees which are indeed a burden to many. It's been reported that the scarcity of seats prompted the greedy private institutions to charge, for capitation fees, a sum as large as 80 lakhs of rupees and about 10 lakhs per annum! Is it really possible for any poor or even middle class person to pay such a large sum? Is education only for the upper class? The answers remain yet unanswered. 3. Incentive for the Economically Backward StudentsYes, you've got the quota system here too, just like all other places. But having one single screening system is really beneficial to the students who are actually poor. It means, if you're really meritorious, you'll surely be placed in one of the top colleges where you won't have to bother about the capitation fees and "other" development fees as well. This is one reason why this single screening system is favored by large number of common people who have to fight to live their lives—no matter how meritorious and hardworking they are. 2. No place for Back-door entriesOf course, NEET had to be scrapped for it was proving to be a huge difficulty in the path of the brokers and other such people who would just demand a heavy amount against the promise of securing medical seats! NEET had to be scrapped for making these greedy people ends meet—India is a free and democratic country, did we just say so? 1. Access to More SeatsIf there's a transparency in the selection system, if the admission is based on purely merit basis sans any stupid backdoor entry system, there will of course be more seats available for the students who are really meritorious and praiseworthy. Due to a huge flourish in the private institutions and the middlemen, most of the seats were already full even before the merit list was put up! The seats were, to put it straight and in simple words, available for sale in the open market—can you imagine what kind of doctors would they produce? Moving To Gurgaon? These 17 Survival Tips Will Come Handy! Posted: 25 Dec 2013 01:30 PM PST Welcome to Gurgaon, the concrete city of India. This post is specifically for the people who are planning to relocate to Gurgaon. If you have been following the news headlines, I can bet you are at least concerned about the city's traffic and power-cut problems. But, don't worry! Mentioned below are certain handy tips and tricks, which will help make your stay safe, fun and comfortable in Gurgaon. #1. Get your own conveyance – most preferably a car (bikes/scooties can be unsafe). Gurgaon's public transport system is horrible and unreliable. Do not be overconfident that you can easily manage with Auto Rickshaws. The auto-walas here do not kick start their auto until they have a dozen people aboard. Crazy, but that's how it is in Gurgaon. #2. Going out alone, especially during the odd hours is a bad idea. If at all, go out in groups of 4 or at least 3. Roam around only in gated localities and communities. The city at night – looks beautiful but demons in the dark are just as ugly. #3. Learn to speak Hindi (at least a bit, if you don't know it already). People around here find it really un-cool to converse in English and unlike this, you'd have to really work on that. #4. Do not forget to get an AC before the merciless summer comes knocking. It can be that hot in Gurgaon in May – July, no kidding. #5. You are sure to find a mix of cultures here in Gurgaon, as everybody here originally hails from a different city. Gurgaon has no roots of its own. You can easily find people from your town or city here. Make some friends. #6. Huge and lavish Malls have mushroomed in Gurgaon, which are perhaps the best hangout places here (almost for every season). But, you're going to have a tough time in the parking lot. Be ready for that. #7. Window shop at malls. You will save a great deal. #8. Gurgaon comprises of various narrow streets, where you can expect to shop your desired stuff at relatively cheaper prices. #9. You will come across paying-guest accommodations more often. Although the housing and commercial constructions are quite captivating in Gurgaon, but due to its poorly developed drainage system, majority of sectors are bound to get flooded with water during the rainy season. Keep that in mind when hunting for a dwelling here. #10. If you are planning to put up in any one of the paying guests accommodations, know the terms and conditions well in advance. If you don't, you may have to spend almost a third of your entire salary on paying electricity and rent bills. #11. Have fun, when you can. You can enjoy your weekends in Gurgaon by going for bowling at 32Milestone, watching a play in the Epicenter, catching up a musical live performance at KOD and savor the delicious Buffet served here or simply appreciate a short recreational trip at the Rajiv Gandhi Energy Park or maybe at the Biodiversity Park. #12. You are sure to fall in love with this place if you are a dipsomaniac, chain smoker or a party animal. #13. Gurgaon is a delight for all the foodies our there! Right from the authentic Lebanese to delightful Italian and some mouthwatering Chinese, you are sure to love the menus offered by the restaurants here. With numerous flavors of beer and Tequila shots, the pubs and restaurants in Gurgaon offer quite a treat. #14. Get to know the routes of the Delhi Metro. It will be easy for you to take metro to various places in Delhi or Noida and back. #15. Power cuts during summers are common, and they can literally suck the life out of your body. Keep up with your backup plan – install inverters or generators in your house way before the arrival of summer. #16. Do NOT pick a fight. There are 100% chances that this seemingly powerless guy you just called an asshole or something else in your mother tongue might call a dozen people and beat you up in full day light. #17. Burglaries, chain snatchings and pick pocketing do not happen every day or to everyone but they're very real. Be safe. Take precautions. Welcome to Gurgaon! The post Moving To Gurgaon? 7 Mind-Churning Mysteries That Were Solved Of Late Posted: 25 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST You are a fan of detective or mystery novels—aren't you? A Sherlock Holmes or probably an Agatha Christie novel keeps your mind at work in a way which even exams fail to do. That explains the reason why you're reading this post! Although we are all self-proclaimed fans of mysteries, do we really keep a track of the "real" mysteries that pop up around us? Well, most of us don't. Let's take a look of some spine-chilling mysteries that were solved of late: 7. The Mystery of Jack the RipperJack the Ripper was the name given to an unidentified serial killer who was active in and around the White Chapel district of London some 125 years back. According to sources, he would only attack the prostitutes and slash their throats before mutilating their abdominal region. But now, new sources have come out with the fact that their abdominal regions were mutilated only at the mortuary. Well, we don't have any option but to believe it! 6. Imprints of Human Faces on MarsThe Cydonian region of Mars attracted the attention of scientists for some queer reason —the shape of the hills resembled human faces! Photographs time and again indicated the same thing. Conspiracy theorists, as they always, do related these paces to biblical faces and god knows what else. However, newest technological applications demonstrate that there are no faces at all —these mysterious faces have been destroyed by the landslides, and were hence random structures made by dust. 5. The Curious Case of Mary CelesteNo, it's no woman or girl; it's a ship that was found totally bereft of passengers near Azores in the Atlantic. The cargo and other personal belongings were found intact and undisturbed. This raised many doubts and ultimately led to rumors that it was a ghost ship. However, in 2006, Dr. Andrea Sella, a Chemistry professor at the University of London, created a replica of the ship; he concluded that the ship suffered a weird explosion due to the leakage of gas from 9 out of 1,701 barrels of alcohol. According to him, it had "pressure-wave type of explosion… There was a spectacular wave of flame but, behind it, was relatively cool air. No soot was left behind and there was no burning or scorching." And thus, the mystery surrounding the ghost ship was finally solved. Well, at least until someone else comes up with an even more convincing answer. 4. The Cannibalistic Natives, SusquehannocksThis case is an out and out example of the treacherous colonial regime. Susquehannocks were a Native American tribe whom the colonizers massively dehumanized and demonized by depicting them "cannibals". It was claimed that they had "eaten" up their neighboring tribe. However, it was April Beisaw, an anthropologist from Vassar College, who, along with two of her students, studied the area, artifacts and concluded that their neighbors didn't die as a result of any cannibalistic attack by Susquehannocks for no evidence of violence could be found. 3. The Titanic ChildA few days after the colossal ship sank, the body of a baby boy was found in the Atlantic Ocean. The body was then buried in Nova Scotia with a tombstone reading "the Unknown child". However, in 2001, the researchers of an Ontario university were granted the permission of exhuming the body. After much dilemma, they claimed the body to be Eino Panula's, one among the four children on board Titanic. This claim was later proved to be wrong when a DNA test was carried out. The test confirmed that the "unknown child" was Sidney Goodwin, the youngest child of Fred and Augusta Goodwin. 2. The "Hope" of ObamaObama's "hope" poster, which was used during his 2008 Election campaign, created a stir among the media and people alike. Although the poster was designed by Shepard Fairey, the source of the original photograph was untraceable. However, Fairey was recorded as saying that the picture had been taken from Google though it was untraceable till a year or so. It was only in 2009 that the mystery was broken and the photo was traced. It was taken by Mannie Garcia, a freelance professor, during a media event with George Clooney. 1. Can Women Blush in the Dark?Well, it seems a stupid question but thought provoking, nevertheless. Women are mysteries, after all! Many researchers and scientists couldn't arrive at a definite conclusion until recently when researches from the Netherlands and Germany collaborated to find out this divine truth. They planted a heat-sensitive camera in a dark room with a woman and asked her to blush. When she blushed, there was more heat evolving from her cheeks, proving that blood rushed to the surface—she was blushing! Moral of the story: never dismiss any question as trivial and stupid.

7 Really Stupid Indian Laws That Should Be Done Away With ASAP Posted: 25 Dec 2013 04:30 AM PST Right after the Indian Independence, the first task the Government had, was to formulate a constitution. This Constitution of India is by far the longest written constitution in the world and contains around 448 articles, 12 schedules, 5 appendices and 98 amendments. Although this sounds quite a great deal, the constitution does contain numerous loop holes. Let's have a look at some of the most stupid Indian Laws that are a blot on country’s progressive image — 7. Legal Drinking AgeThis is perhaps the most talked about and stupid law of India—the legal drinking age of people which strangely varies from state to state. In some states, the legal age is 25 years whereas in some it is 18—and in some, drinking alcohol is absolutely banned. And, this is a law of a country where people become "adults" at 18 years, can marry and can even choose the next Prime Minister at such a tender age! 6. Suicidal attempts are illegalUnder Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, attempting suicide is a punishable crime. This is indeed a strange one because, as far as I know, this is MY body, and I have rights over myself! This is more like flouting the rules of "democracy". This law is quite similar to one in Athens with the only exception being, you'll be denied a proper burial if you commit suicide. In India, in thought in same line, suicides are legal, but suicidal attempts are criminal! 5. Section 377This is indeed the most talked about "fiasco" of this year. The denial of any kind of sexual intercourse which is "against the law of Nature" came as a shock to many. We sometimes cannot help but wonder who they are to decide what's against the Nature and what's not! Do they even know the scientific fact that homosexuality is found in around 1500 different species on the planet? Are they to decide whom we should love and whom we shouldn't? Grow up, people! 4. Law for LGBT and AdulterersUnder section 497 of the Indian Penal Code, adultery is a criminal offence. But the establishment of a direct relationship between the LGBT community and adultery is no less an offence either. This is by far the most stupid law which propounds nothing but gender discrimination. Please someone let these "geniuses" understand that "straight" people can also be adulterers! Another part of the same section suggests that an unfaithful husband can be sentenced to jail whereas a dishonest wife can go on making liaisons with other "men". We wonder since when India has become so pro-women! 3. The famous Internet Censorship ActThis act, proposed by the great Kapil Sibal, is nothing but a great entertainer. According to Sibal, offensive and provocative images wouldn't be allowed to be uploaded on the social networking sites and other sites; and, if the site-managers failed to do so, the Government itself would! This was not only frowned upon as a detour of the freedom of speech or expression but also was turned down as being hypothetical. After all, who has the stamina to go on deleting each and every "provocative" and "offensive" imagine on the Internet. Also, who can define what "offensive" is? This is how Anonymous India responded to Kapil Sibal by hacking his website 2. Laws for Recruitment as a PilotDo you want to become a Pilot? Good, but are your legs long enough? Well, this might sound a bit cranky but yes, the length of one's legs determines whether he/she can be recruited as an Indian Air Force pilot. So, if even if you're intelligent and good enough to be a great pilot, you'd be turned down if your legs are found even half-an-inch shorter than the prescribed requirement. 1. The Indian Telegraph Act of 1885The date of its amendment tells us how much of an archaic law it is. Once used by the British to extract information of the rebellions and receive information about the rebels, this act is left as a mere useless showpiece in the Indian constitution, especially at this contemporary age of cyber media and new media. We all do respect things of the past, but we definitely don't suffer from high nostalgia—especially in these cases—and neither do we want to! 6 Diseases That Are Spread From Animals Posted: 25 Dec 2013 12:01 AM PST Animals have become a part of human life since they provide us with food, friendship and protection. Though not many diseases suffered by animals spread to humans, there are some exceptions of zoonotic diseases with deadly outcomes. Rats, rabbits, cats, dogs and even snakes carry diseases that can prove to be deadly to humans. Some of these diseases were known to mankind for ages whereas some of them were diagnosed only in recent years. Many confuse malaria to be a zoonotic disease though it is not. Diseases from animal can spread to humans through infected animal bites, bug that have bitten infected animals, coming in contact with animal feces or directly from the animal itself. Here is the list of top 6 diseases that spread from animals. 6. Ebola haemorrhagic fever (EHF)EHF is known to be the most potent viral diseases ever to affect the human race. The virus transmits when people handle sick or dead infected wild animals like gorillas, monkeys, fruit bats, antelopes or chimpanzees. It also spreads through blood, body fluids and tissues of infected humans. Depending on the strain of the virus, the morbidity rate can be in range of 25-90 percent for clinically reported cases. 5. Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD)KFD us a tick-borne disease that first manifested among the monkeys of Kyasanur forests killing a large number of monkeys in the region. Locally it is also known as monkey fever. The disease that affects 100-500 people every year has a morbidity rate of 2-10%. Some survivors are known to suffer the after effects of the infection permanently. The reservoir hosts for the disease are known to be monkey, rats, squirrels, mice and shrews. The nymphs of the tick bite humans to spread infection. 4. HIVThe deadly disease which spread around the globe like a wild fire, originated in chimps and primates of African jungles before infecting humans. HIV, which spread among humans mostly through sexual contacts, blood transfusion, sharing needles and mother to children, has affected the Sub-Saharan African region the most. The virus is present in the blood, semen, vaginal fluid, or breast milk. Apart from the suffering of the illness itself, the HIV positive people have to face stigma from the society. 3. AnthraxAnthrax is a life-threatening deadly disease that is transmitted to humans through ruminants like cattle, sheep, goats or horses. Fortunately, this disease does not spread from infectious person to other people. In recent years, the possibility of using the anthrax causing bacterium, Bacillus Anthracis in biological warfare, has caused a lot of concern among many targeted nations. The anthrax organism is known to exist in the soil in the form of spores for nearly 48 years, which makes it difficult to eradicate this disease. Though anthrax can transmit through skin and ingestion, the most deadly infection is caused by inhaling the spores. 2. PlaguePlague is one of the most deadly and feared disease since ages. It has been responsible for one the most devastating pandemics known in human history. It is estimated that nearly 30-60% of Europe's population was wiped out due to Black Death. If proper treatment is not given on time, Bubonic Plague can kill about 70% of infected people within 4 days of infection. The deadly disease is spread through enterobacteria Yersinia pestis that thrive on small fleas that live on the rodents. 1. RabiesRabies is transmitted to humans from the bite of the infected animal. Rabies is often spread to humans through bite of rabid dog which is responsible for nearly 97% of rabies infection in humans. Treating the condition immediately is very important as there is no cure or treatment once the rabies virus reaches the central nervous system. The frightening aspect of the disease is and mania, hallucinations and hydrophobia suffered by the patients. The disease proves fatal within a few days of the onset of symptoms. Even with the great leap in advancement of medical science, there is an annual death rate of 55,000 due to rabies every year.
