Top 10 Theoretical Physicists

Posted: 29 Aug 2013 06:30 AM PDT

Theoretical physics is one of the greatest pursuits of mankind. Trying to understand how the universe works is the biggest mystery that man can solve. Countless men have given their whole life to this pursuit. Through their hard work and genius we now understand the universe in deep detail. Although a lot still has to be answered, our understanding so far has been improved a lot by dedicated theoretical physicists around the world. It’s hard to rank these scientists in any objective way and all we can have our personal subjective outlooks. Here’s such a list of my personal favorite physicists.

10. Ashoke Sen:

Ashoke Sen is an Indian theoretical physicist who has made many contributions to the field of string theory. He was born in Calcutta in 1956 to a physics professor, Anil Kumar Sen. His paper on S-duality has been very influential in string theory research. He’s made the famous Sen conjecture about open string tachyon condensation on D-branes. He received the Fundamental Physics Prize in 2012 for his work in string theory.

9. Leonard Susskind:

Leonard Susskind is the professor of theoretical physics at Stanford University. His research includes string theory, quantum field theory, quantum statistical mechanics and quantum cosmology. He’s regarded as one of the fathers of string theory as he was one of the scientists who independently but simultaneously came up with the idea that particles could be states of excitation of a relativistic string. He’s won the J. J. Sakurai Prize in 1998.

8. Roger Penrose:

Sir Roger Penrose is a British mathematical physicist and philosopher. He’s the Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford. He is famous for his contributions to general relativity and cosmology. He was awarded the 1988 Wolf Prize for physics along with Stephen Hawking for their work in general relativity.

7. Peter Higgs:

The British theoretical physicist, Peter Higgs is most famous for predicting the existence of the Higgs Boson particle. He’s given the Higgs mechanism which is an important part of the Standard Model of particle physics and it explains the origin of mass of elementary particles. He’s won countless medals and prizes for his work in particle physics.

6. Edward Witten:

Edward Witten is an American theoretical physicist and the professor of mathematical physics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton University. He has worked on string theory, quantum gravity, super symmetric quantum field theories and other areas of mathematical physics. He became the first physicist to receive the highest award in mathematics, the Fields Medal in 1990. He’s regarded as the greatest living theoretical physicist.

5. Stephen Hawking:

Stephen Hawking is the most popular of living physicists because of his works in popular science including A Brief History of Time which became an international best seller. He was born in 1942 and suffers from a motor neuron disease that has left him almost completely paralyzed. He’s won a lot of medals and awards for his work in theoretical cosmology. He worked with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularities theorems and predicted that black holes emit radiation, which is now called Hawking radiation.

4. Erwin Schrodinger:

Erwin Schrodinger was an Austrian physicist who is most famous for his work in quantum theory. Schrodinger’s equation of wave functions forms the basis of wave mechanics and matrix mechanics. His famous experiment called the Schrodinger’s cat was his way of showing the inherent paradoxes in the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics. His book What is Life? is a famous philosophical book where he looks at life from the point of view of physics.

3. Werner Heisenberg:

Werner Karl Heisenberg was a German theoretical physicist most famous for the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. He’s known as the father of quantum mechanics and received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1932. He also made important contributions to the fields of hydrodynamics, atomic nucleus, ferromagnetism, cosmic rays and subatomic particles.

Werner Heisenberg

2. Max Planck:

Max Planck won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 as the originator of quantum theory. He was a German theoretical physicist and his theory revolutionized the understanding of atomic and subatomic particles. Along with Einstein he’s considered the second greatest mind of the 20th century.

1. Albert Einstein:

The most famous theoretical physicist of all time has to be Albert Einstein. Born in Germany, Einstein was gifted as a child but didn’t do well in school because of his disagreement with authority and the teaching methods. He went on to give the general theory of relativity, which along with Planck’s quantum mechanics forms the two pillars of modern physics. His work has been immortalized in the mass energy equivalence equation, E = mc^2.

Top 10 Weird Auctions Ever

Posted: 29 Aug 2013 01:30 AM PDT

In the past many years, there have been numerous instances on various e-commerce sites and other platforms where weird products were auctioned among the interested participants. The items reflected so much idiocy that rarely anyone believed in them at the first go. But, as people placed bids, sometimes obnoxiously high, everyone were left dumbstruck. Listed below are top 10 weird auctions ever:

10. Iceland for Sale:

It was in October 2008, that netizens were surprised to find Iceland (the nation) on auction online. The bidding initiated at a price of 99 pence jumped to $17.28 within couple of days. Hilariously, around 84 bids were pitched in by almost 26 anonymous bidders. There are seriously no limits to what a person can think about.

9. A Dollar for a Sports Car:

During an interview with supermodel Jodie Marsh in 2004, Tim Shaw expressed his feelings for the lady on air, oblivious of the fact that his wife and children were glued on to the radio at that very moment. It was then that his wife decided to quit an already strained relationship and teach him a lesson by selling his most favorite possession – his sports car for just a Dollar. The car was sold off within 5 minutes. Whoop! Whoop! This is called an auction.

8. Ghostly Auction:

Rarely does such an auction find the light of the day. It was back in September 2010 that a person named Martin Fawcett put his friendly ghost on auction. This wasn’t the only thing he wanted to auction as the winning bid was also promised to receive a glass jar – ghost's home. Later on, after eBay managerial board member's brainstormed (may be for the first time), the auction was taken off the site.

7. Elvis Presley's Stained Underwear:

It's more of a riddle than anything else. Who would ever want to own a soiled pair of under wear? Not me, at least! However, this unique option was staged at Omega Auction House in September 2012. The reserve price was $11,000 but the maximum bid could only reach $8,000. Alas, the wonderful underwear found no takers. Elvis was great. But, his underwear? Come on!

6. Food menus from the Titanic:

There were two menus from the disaster-prone vessel Titanic on sale for a huge sum of around $160,450. Nevertheless, the auctioneer got the historical facts all wrong as the menus were actually part of dinner listings used at Grand Central Hotel prior to ship's departure.

5. The Letter to God:

A handwritten letter by legendary physicist/scientist Albert Einstein in which he challenged the idea of God went for auction at about $ 3 million on eBay. The letter gained fame for being the revolutionary scientist's last views on religion and God.

4. New Zealand for Sale:

It can either be described as a silly prank (though, all pranks are foolish!) or height of nonsensical stupidity; a person in Brisbane, Australia offered New Zealand for sale through an auction on eBay. Interestingly, just after some hours, the person received 22 bids for his product and the bid price was floating at $3,000. It was only after the Foreign Ministry of the country got involved that auction was called off later. Nothing can get weirder than this, really.

3. Jar with Brangelina's Exhale:

It may sound dubious but the story is entirely true. A jar was carried to the premier of Brangelina's movie named Mr. and Mrs. Smith just in order to catch hold of their breath. The promoters boasted that the celebrity couple actually exhaled in the jar while passing through it on the red carpet. To top it all, the jar was auctioned at $530. Thank God, the world didn't end that day.

2. Britney's Used Chew Gum:

eBay did it again. This time – it was pop star Britney's used chewing gum. The chewing gum was spat out by the celebrity singer after one of her shows. Amusingly, the chewing gum was sold for $14,000 dollars. But, how come the seller was so much sure about the authenticity of the gum being spit from Britney's mouth?  The story is such a crap to believe in but regrettably a truth.

1. Sandwich with Unusual Faces:

Although, eBay is known all sorts of weird auctions, this one stands out from the rest in the league; comfortably. Hilarious it may sound but a sandwich with an image of Virgin Mary appearing on its surface was sold at an astounding price of $28,000 in November 2004. To make the matters worse, the sandwich had been partially eaten as well.

Top 10 UFO Sighting Cases

Posted: 28 Aug 2013 10:30 PM PDT

History is abundant in claims associated with UFO sightings. While defense agencies and a certain section of intellectual society refute such claims and refer to them as creation of some delusional and mistaken minds, others support such theories with images and proofs in the form of video recordings. The debate over UFO's reality is in existence for some time now and most certainly, would be stretching over for some more time till some rational explanation based on facts and evidences is out in the public domain. Here are top 10 UFO sighting cases.

10. Keneth Arnold and his sightings, 1947:

It was only after the claims of this Idaho pilot about sighting a string of nine shiny saucer shaped objects flying at supersonic speeds that UFO's gained widespread popularity all over the world. The pilot couldn’t be assumed to be high, stupid or insane so easily. As per his claims, the UFO's were sighted near Mount Rainier in Washington. Kenneth became a cynosure for the pressmen of some time for having something unusual which till the time were only considered fictional.

9. Tehran sightings, 1976:

In one of the most amusing incidents reporter ever, a UFO was believed to have disabled two F-4 interceptor aircrafts and control room based on ground. The Iranian military officials later made a statement clarifying the whole issue; one that somehow didn't entirely discredit the role of extraterrestrial object.

8. The Kecksburg UFO incident, 1965:

Many residents of a Pennsylvania village (United States) witnessed a green streak of fire across the sky before it crashed into the nearby fields. Locals described the size of the object to be huge and that it made some U turns before crashing finally. Later on, military casted aspersions that it can be the work of USSR's military for the cold war between the two world powers was at peak during that period. However, UFO researcher Clifford Stone blasted their theory. Even the document related to the incident was missing from the concerned department when some braveheart journalists tried to access it.

7. Roswell Crash, 1947:

It's one of the most pressing cases of 1947 where UFO proponents propagated that the US military has caught hold of an alien looking aircraft that had crashed in its boundary. The US military thereon, in their press releases maintained that they have captured some debris of an experimental high altitude surveillance balloon but did NOT refute the theory outrightly. However, different stories kept floating for some time.

6. Levelland case, 1957:

The incident was extensively reported in many of the newspapers in the US during the time it occurred. Some of the motorists in Texas reported that their engines stalled as an egg shaped object with glowing light passed over them. And, when the object had passed over, the engines got back into life, again.

5. Stephensville Lights, 2008:

On the evening of January 8, 2008 almost 40 local residents along with a police officer and local amateur civilian pilot claimed to witness a UFO. According to them, the lighted object hovered around the farm lands for over 5 minutes before shooting off into the sky. The size of the UFO was reported to be as wide as a mile.

4. Westall incident, 1966:

It was in Melbourne that a teacher and his 200 students witnessed a flying saucer tumble down into green field nearby. Although, witnesses weren’t able to click a quick picture, they still gather for reunions regularly.

3. Sau Paulo encounter, 1986:

As per the incident that was recorded in Sau Paulo in Brazil, 20 UFO's were cited by the locals and military officials. As soon as the military aircrafts were sent to intercept them, they vanished in the sky leaving no trace of their presence. Quite strange, no? Well, that's what UFOs have been all about until now.

2. The Phoenix Lights, 1997:

It was on 13th March, 1997, that many people in Nevada and Arizona observed a V-shaped object that carrying seven lights on its exterior. There were some sections of crowd which even claimed to have witnessed some orbits and triangles in the sky. Cops in the area were alerted; even they claimed to testify the incident, albeit in hushed voices.  Later on, military claimed it to be result of diversionary flares while National Guard Pilots were on training run. But, very few people took the claim on its face value.

1. Bracknell Pub sightings, 2013:

It was in Bracknell in Berkshire near a pub that a person enjoying his beer inside photographed two glowing discs flying in the sky. The pair was shooting off in the sky with intense speed and this is what caught the attention of the person who was loitering in the garden of the pub at that hour. Although, he was a bit drunk as he himself confessed later, the photographs don't underrule his sightings at all.
