Top 10 Sexist Remarks Made By Indian Politicians

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 06:40 AM PDT

Indian politicians never disappoint when it comes to creating sensational news with their comments. They have mastered the art of creating controversies. In recent years many renowned politicians have shown how misogyny is deep seated within the Indian men. When the top politicians can’t help but speak of women as objects then what hope do we have from the masses. The plight of women in India is even worse than some of the Islamic nations where women have no freedoms. In India freedoms are given but every women is threatened not to enjoy these freedoms and those who do dare to take their rights are called “modern high-fy” women and are looked down upon. The misogynistic mindset runs deep into the roots of our society as proved by various comments by our political leaders. Here are the top 10 sexist remarks made by Indian politicians.

10. “Smriti Irani Is Thumkewaali” By Sanjay Nirupam:

Sanjay Nirupam, a congress MP, said this against Smriti Irani, a BJP leader and former TV actress, during a TV debate on a reputed News channel; “Char din hue hain aur aap rajnitik vishleshak bani firti hain. Aap toh TV pe thumke lagati thi, aaj chunavi vishleshak ban gayi.” Loosely translated to English, “I don’t have to listen to you. It’s been four days since you have entered politics and you already think you are a great political analyst. Till yesterday you were dancing on television and today you have become a politician.”

Not only is this remark derogatory to Smriti Irani and to all actresses, it is derogatory to all women in general. That’s the sorry state in India, a women who has mastered many fields is chided instead of praised for it.

9. “Only Attractive Women Get Ahead” By Mulayam Singh Yadav:

Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party supremo, is known for being sexist. He has many remarks attributed to him and it is no surprise as to what he thinks of women. In a public rally in Barabanki he said, “Only women from the affluent classes can get ahead in life, but remember you rural women will never get a chance because you are not that attractive.”

In one sentence he has managed to say a lot about women and how they get ahead in life. It is hopeless to comment further on Mulayam Singh Yadav as he will never stop being a sexist.

8. “Marry Girls Early To Prevent Rape” By Om Prakash Chautala:

Following the Delhi gang rape case in December 2012, the whole nation was awoken for a while. The politicians hid scared for the first few days as a spontaneous protest started all over the nation. But soon the sexist comments started coming out.

One such comment was by the Ex Chief Minister of Haryana, Om Prakash Chautala; “We should learn from the past, specially in Mughal era, people used to marry their girls to save them from Mughal atrocities and currently a similar situation is arising in the state.” According to him there’s a simple solution to the rape problem. Just marry off the girls. Then they are the husband’s problem. As if married women don’t get raped! I guess he has never heard of marital rape. Or more likely he doesn’t count that as rape at all.

7. “Women Don’t Need Mobile Phones” By Rajpal Saini:

“There is no need to give phones to women and children. It distracts them and is useless. Why do women need phones? If you have given phones to them, take them back. Without mobiles which important work are they missing out on? My mother and sister never had mobiles, did they die?” These lines were said by BSP MLA Rajpal Saini in UP during a rally.

I’m sure if you ask him he’d say the best system is that of the Taliban which give no freedom to their women. That way the women stay safe. It really makes me sad to hear such remarks as the situation really seems to be hopeless in India.

6. Sriprakash Jaiswal Says “Old Wife Loses Her Charm”:

Union Coal Minister, Sriprakash Jaiswal was so excited after India won a T20 match against Pakistan that he lost control over his brain; “New victories and new weddings both have their own importance. As time passes, the joy of the victory fades, just like a wife becomes old and loses her charm as time passes.”

I guess he’s not too pleased with his wife that’s why such remarks came to his mind. Poor guy.

5. “Stay Indoor To Prevent Rape” By Botsa Satyanarayan:

Another chauvinist misogynist sexist typical male comment came from Botsa Satyanarayan, the Andhra Pradesh Congress chief, after the Delhi gang rape case; “Just because India achieved freedom at midnight does not mean that women can venture out after dark. They should ensure that they do not board buses with few passengers. The woman should have thought twice before boarding the suspicious private bus that night. Though the incident was condemnable, she should also have behaved keeping in mind the situation. Although it (Delhi gang-rape) was a minor incident, Soniaji made it a point to meet the protesters when they called on her.”

So many things are horrifying about this statement. First is the reappearance of the Taliban like mindset that the best way to ensure the safety of women is to take away their freedoms. Second he calls rape a minor incident! That too the horrific Delhi gang rape! It is interesting how he manages to disrespect women everywhere and then tries to respect his party’s leader Sonia Gandhi. I’m sure she is proud of him.

4. “50 Crore Girlfriend” By Narendra Modi:

Move back NaMo Trolls! I haven’t said anything yet! Let me quote Modi before you try to defend him.

In a rally in Himachal Pradesh he put a price tag on Sunanda Pushkar, now the wife of Shashi Tharoor (was his girlfriend at that time), of rupees 50 crore. “Wah kya girlfriend hai. Have you ever seen a Rs 50-crore girlfriend?”

Very good Mr. Modi. That’s what’s expected from the Prime Minister candidate of the leading opposition party in India. Objectify women. Put a price tag on each of them!

3. “Dented And Painted Women” By Abhijit Mukherjee:

Our nation’s President’s own son, Abhijit Mukherhjee said in response to the spontaneous protest against the Delhi gang rape, “dented-painted women protesters in Delhi went to discotheques and then turned up at India Gate to express outrage.”

What can you expect in a nation where the President’s son has such views? These are young men who are going to be the political leaders of the future. I don’t see any improvement in the plight of women in India in the coming years.

2. Raj Thackeray’s Insult Of Jaya Bachchan:

Raj Thackeray is one step away from being a terrorist. He’s a chauvinist, regionalist and a sexist. When Jaya Bachchan chose to speak in Hindi during a rally in Maharashtra, Raj Thackeray commented in Marathi, “Guddi buddhi zhali pan akal aali nahi.” (Guddi has grown old but has not attained wisdom with age.)

He disrespected an older woman and he disrespected India and our national tongue. It just shows how much respect women have earned in India when successful women such as Jaya Bachchan are so easily disrespected.

1. “Par Kati Auratein” By Sharad Yadav:

Sharad Yadav finishes our exhausting list of sexist politicians. Whether it is JDU or Samajwadi Party or Congress of BJP, one thing all have in common is the misogynistic attitude towards women. While opposing the Women’s Bill, Sharad Yadav said that it will only benefit well-off women in the cities. He described such women as “par kati auratein” (women with short hair.) It’s just another comment that shows how ignorant and sexist our politicians are and how deep the rot of misogyny goes in our society.

The word 'political strategy' deals with politics but for strategic standpoint. 8 Bloodiest Days In The History Of World

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 01:38 AM PDT

There are plenteous instances in the world's history when the battle or more precisely single-day-combats between two warring-sides consumed more number of men than many of the battles across the world combined together in different eras. This showcases the intensity of bloodshed that was part of these fierce battles. It can be imagined straightforwardly about the number of fatalities, had these tactical strikes lasted more than a single-day. For that reason, these battles easily go beyond the normal expectations of war in their scale of mass destruction and collateral loss. Here we attempt to produce a list of seizes, civilian causalities during the battles or strategic strikes that just lasted a single-day. Listed below are 8 bloodiest days in the history of world:

8. Cannae (216 BC):

Nothing less than 50,000 Romans lost their lives and an indefinite number faced serious fatalities at the hands of Hannibal's multi-national army. Till date, there is no match to this bloody battle between two sides; all of it happened on a single day. The battle had such long lasting consequences for the Romans that they didn’t dare to face Hannibal and his army for the next 12 years.

7. America's epic 12 hour long battle:

Almost forgotten and rarely mentioned in the world's history books, almost 23,000 Americans were killed and around 15,000 were injured in a single day on the US soil, 150 years ago. It can easily be counted as the bloodiest day in the history of the United States of America till date. It was on 17th September 1862 that a civil war involving Yankees and southern Rebels fought a war for continuous 12-hours next to Antietam Creek resulting in mass casualties from both sides. The place is still remembered by the name of "Bloody Lane" and the memories of intense bloodshed haunt elderly Americans still.

6. Stamford Bridge (1066):

Going by the records of the battle of Stamford Bridge of 25th September, 1066, no other battle can be as brutal as this one for the sheer disregard for human life by King Harold's army. Harold's troops surprised Norse Viking's invasion army near York and slaughtered almost entire troop in matter of few hours. It is recorded that only 24 out of total 300 longboats from the Viking army sailed back home.

5. Borodino-one day conflict:

Fought on 7th September, 1812, the Battle of Borodino was the largest and bloodiest single day action of the French invasion of Russia and the Napoleonic wars. It involved more than 250,000 troops and lead to 70,000 causalities. The war was fought near the village of Borodino. Almost one-third of soldiers from Napoleon's army were killed or injured in the day long battle.

4. Denmark-Sweden war of 1676:

4th December, 1676 can be termed as the deadliest single day in the Denmark-Sweden history. It was the early morning of the day when 8000 Swedes ambushed approximately 13,000 Danes in a battle that continued all day long. The following day, about 9,500 corpses were recovered from the field outside Lund, Sweden.

3. The battle of Towton:

The battle of Towton was fought on 29th March, 1461 near village named Towton in Yorkshire. Till date, it is regarded as the bloodiest single day battle on English soil. Around 50,000 soldiers fought amidst a snowstorm on the day which resulted in killing of roughly 28,000 by the end of the day. The battle is also considered to be historical for it brought about a sea change in the monarchial leadership in England.

2. The first day of the Battle of Somme:

The first day of the Somme Offensive on 1st July, 1916 is by far one of the five major battles that consumed a sizable amount of human lives on a single day. The bloodiest single day of battle lead to British Expeditionary Force (BEF) losing around 20,000 men. Although, number of men dead in German camp was not clear, 10,000 is the estimate for the casualties still.
