Top 10 Possibilities Of Beyond Earth Colonization

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 07:38 AM PDT

We have reached a level of consumption that is more than our planet can sustain naturally. Our population keeps on increasing and the Earth’s resources keep on depleting. Beyond Earth colonization might still be somewhere between science fiction and speculative research, but there will come a time when it will be the only hope for humanity and our home planet. Already a lot of possibilities are being discussed which could help us colonize other planets in the solar system and maybe one day planets of other solar systems as well. Here are the top 10 possibilities of beyond Earth colonization.

10. Moon:

The Moon is by far the most realistic opportunity for beyond earth colonization. We’ve been there already so we know that it can be done. Research is being done on how to build permanent bases on the Moon that can later turn into colonies of emigrants. The obvious benefits are the proximity to Earth and low escape velocities that can facilitate frequent transportation of material and men. The lack of elements such as nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon and the long term effects of low gravity are some of the concerns that need to be addressed.

9. Mars:

Mars is also one of more popular places for space colonization as it is very similar to Earth and has a lot of elements necessary for life in its crust and atmosphere. It is also believed that Mars might have supported life once and there could still be some life in some parts of the planet. Terraforming of Mars could make it possible to have an atmosphere thick enough so that humans could survive outside of pressure vessels but it’s still a long way into the future.

8. Venus:

Venus is a planet very similar to Earth in size and shape but its atmosphere is very hostile and it is impossible to colonize its surface. But there have been discussions about building floating habitats that float high in Venus’ atmosphere where the pressure and temperature is suitable for life. The atmosphere of Venus contains sulfuric acid clouds which can be used to extract water.

7. Asteroids:

An interesting idea is to colonize the asteroids. There are large bodies in the asteroid belt such as the dwarf planet Ceres that can become a base for space exploration. The large number of asteroids in the asteroid belt means the availability of all elements necessary for colonization. Some asteroids that have a near earth orbit can also house space habitats that are built when the asteroid passes by. There has been talk about building thrusters into the asteroid surface to help steer it to avoid collisions with planets.

6. Jovian Moons:

The moons of Jupiter have a lot of potential to be colonized. The moons such as Europa, Ganymede and Callisto have been considered for building bases or for colonizing as they have enough necessary elements required for colonization. Europa might even have life in the seas under the thick ice sheets. Ganymede has a magnetic core which protects the surface from solar radiation.

5. Moons of Saturn:

The moons of Saturn also offer similar opportunities like that of Jupiter. Titan is the best candidate as it has a dense atmosphere and a lot of carbon compounds. Enceladus has liquid waters coming out of its geezers in the southern hemisphere of the icy moon which makes it a prime location to find life and for human colonization.

Moons of Saturn

4. Moons of Uranus and Neptune:

The moons of Uranus namely Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon and the moon of Neptune, Triton all offer possibilities for beyond Earth colonization. They all have frozen water and other elements that will be required for such an operation. The distance and extreme cold of the outer solar system are the problems that will need to be dealt with.

3. The Gas Giants:

It’s not just the moons of the gas giants such as Jupiter and Saturn that can be colonized but it might be one day possible to colonize the gaseous surface of these planets themselves. The idea is to build floating cities that will use hydrogen balloons to suspend large masses in the atmosphere at roughly Earth gravity.

The Gas Giants

2. Space Habitats:

Another novel idea is to build space habitats that can orbit around Earth or any other planet or even around the Sun. These will be large ships that have their own atmosphere and even artificial gravity. Such habitats can be placed at Lagrange points in the Earth-Moon system. Lagrange points are specific points where the gravities of two objects match each other so as to form a gravitational balance point.

Space Habitats

1. Generation Ships:

If our own solar system wasn’t enough one day we could travel to other parts of our galaxy and even to other galaxies. Since the distance to travel is so large we could use the idea of generation ships. These will be large ships much like space habitats which house a large population of humans. The idea is to sustain a large enough population for the large number of years it will take to reach other solar systems. Once there we could search for habitable planets and start colonization. A sleeper ship would be similar to a generation ship but the human passengers would be in hibernation or suspended animation for most part of the journey.

7 Best Ways To Kill Obesity

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 07:36 AM PDT

The prevalence of obesity in adults as well as children is increasing at an alarming rate, as a result of which it is now considered to be a leading preventable cause of death globally. Lack of physical activity due to modern technology, easy access to fast food and sedentary work environment are major contributors to weight gain, where as genetics, medical health conditions and psychiatric illness cause obesity in some people. Obesity is not just a disease in itself; it is root cause of many other chronic diseases. It is easier for obesity to kill people than for people to kill obesity, unless there is total dedication and will to do so. The path to weight loss is slow, tough and too slippery, but if you do not quit, the goal can be reached. Here is the list of 7 best ways with which you can kill obesity, to live a better, healthier and longer life.

7. Set Realizable and Realistic Goals:

Waking up one fine day to realize you have gained a lot of weight, making a hasty decision to lose all those extra pounds in next 2-3 months is not only impossible, but also unhealthy. Setting unrealistic goals will take its toll quickly on people, due to which they will abandon the plan even before they get started. Going on crash diets, exercising heavily or taking help of quacks will never get permanent results. Make a plan with which you can stick throughout your life and keep losing a bit of weight every month.

Set Realizable and Realistic Goals

6. Eat Smart:

Most of the obese people are lovers of food; therefore, being on strict diet is not easy for them emotionally. The easy option is to choose food that can help you kill obesity without starving. Chilli, fresh vegetables, whole grains, berries, green tea and many other food help in controlling weight. Instead of trying to eat less, eat more by adding healthy food like watermelons, cucumbers and yellow/green vegetables to the diet. Start meals with low calorie food, so that if you are full you will be leaving the fatty food untouched.

Eat Smart

5. Drink Enough Water:

People spend heavily on weight loss pills and medications foolishly when the real medicine for weight loss – water, is available to everyone for free. One of easiest way to lose weight is by drinking 15 ounce of water 20 minutes before having breakfast or meals. The weight loss achieved by drinking water is not temporary like the results achieved by crash diet.

Drink Enough Water

4. Change Your Lifestyle:

If you did not have enough motivation to change your lifestyle to lose weight, than you have now. The American Medical Association formally certified obesity as a disease; so no more can people say that being overweight is a symbol of health, wealth and fertility. A little bit of changes to your everyday routine can make a lot of difference. Walk around, use stairs, quit smoking, reduce consumption of alcohol, sweets and oil, exercise, keep yourself stress free, sleep well and exercise if possible for a fit and healthy body.

Change Your Lifestyle

3. Keep Track of Your Weight:

Obese people often do not check their weight, as it is very disappointing to watch them gain a few pounds every now and then. Do not close your eyes to reality. Check your weight and keep track of it to know whether the measures you are taking to lose weight is bearing fruit or not. Even if you have lost a little bit weight, give yourself credit for it, because you have already reversed the process of gaining weight and are on the road to success.

Keep Track of Your Weight

2. Eat and Sleep Well:

Trying to lose weight by starving yourself or skipping meals is a wrong strategy. Eating healthy, regular meals on time is the best way to lose weight. It is not the quantity of food, but quality that contributes to obesity. If anyone would claim that they can make you lose weight while you sleep, you would call it a joke, but, research has proven that a good night's sleep leads to weight loss. The amount and quality of your sleep determines the hormonal activity which controls appetite, hence the less you sleep the more you eat, resulting in weight gain.

Eat and Sleep Well

1. Do not quit:

You did not gain weight overnight, consequently you are not going to lose overnight either. Hang on and do not quit if you do not see quick results. No matter how effective plan you have, it is not going to work out until you stick to it. Often, there is reduction in weight initially, but later on it seems like you are stuck. This is when you need to work up the will power and stick to the plan. No matter which exercise you choose, which gym you hit or changes you make, it takes working it out strategically that leads to killing obesity.

Do not quit
