Shashi Tharoor at TED Talk, 7th November, 2009 "Soft power." Shashi Tharoor, besides being an elected member of the Parilament, is a successful book writer, a highly acclaimed critic and column writer. We are free to breathe, to live, to die as we please, as proud Indians. He swore to work on the path laid out by Mahatma Gandhi, to wipe every tear. Nehru knotted a wonderful dream from the orthodox to modern, from poverty to prosperity for the nation as a whole. 5. V.K. Krishna Menon at UN Nations, on 23 January 1957 Menons passion for defending Indian sovereignty when it came to Kashmir led him to be dubbed as 'Hero of Kashmir.' Others who couldn't accept or understand a single man's passion termed it as 'epic filibustering.' Menon at a go spoke for eight hours, trying to convince the floor of India's view point, and in the end unexpectedly fell down unconscious. He was India's voice at the UN for many years and was supposed to be strong supporter of Nehrus ideologies. His speeches at the UN became the basis on which our country's foreign policy was made. His unique style as a statesman, coupled with skillful oratory had him command the masses and turned him into a very successful politician. His speech on 6th April 1980- First Mumbai Adhiveshan marks a date in the history of BJP. His closing statement – “Andhera Chatega, Suraj Niklega, Kamal Khilega” is the gospel for every BJP worker. He was the first to address the UN Assembly in Hindi and has be applauded for it too. 3. Dr B. R. Ambedkar in Parliament, on 25th November, 1949 Popularly known as Babasaheb, Ambedkar was the savior and voice of the ' untouchables '. He is credited for drafting the Indian Constitution and was an avid jurist, philosopher, anthropologist, historian, orator, economist, teacher, and editor. All his life he kept fighting for the rights and social freedom of the Dalits. He was often at loggerheads with Mahatma Gandhi over the issue of untouchability. His speech at the time of presenting the Constitution of India and his quitting speech, reflect high values and principles he lived by is a classic one remembered long after the man has gone. 2. Swami Vivekanand’s speech at the first Worlds Parliament of Religion in Chicago on 11th Sept, 1893 "Sisters and Brothers of America." The monk stole the thunder when he was just thirty years of age. Driving Forces Behind Misdoings: 5 Indian Police Service (IPS) Officers Jailed For Shameful Crimes Posted: Corruption and bribery have reached the deepest roots of our societies and refuse to go away. It's like the pesticides that have attached to our genes like a free radical. Police officers today kill their conscience and forego of the oath they take for serving the country truthfully, for petty gains. By handing them out deterrent punishment and shaming them in society, we can set an example for other officers who might have a weak mind and are tempted in switching sides. Sadly, most of these officers continue to live normal lives, while the judiciary takes it own sweet time. 5. Ajay Kumar Jain He was convicted and handed down a sentence of five years in prison for demanding a bribe of five lakh rupees from a junior officer in the police force itself. He brought disgrace to the institution of public servants. To cover up ones inefficiency with lack of discipline is a serious lapse for a public service officer, to top it, asking for bribe money only compounds the crime. Jain has achieved the distinction of being the first IPS officer to be sent to jail in a bribery case. Outside the court where was convicted for bribery charges, Sanjeev Kokil, the officer whom Jain was accused of asking a bribe from distributed sweets after conclusion of the trial. However it was ironic that the same Kokil was dismissed from his job, a few months later, on account of corruption charges against him. 4. Saji Mohan While holding a sensitive and responsible post, Saji Mohan was held guilty of selling contraband drugs that the Narcotic Control Bureau had seized from drug peddlers. He was convicted along with Balwinder Kumar, a former SP. Mumbai drug traffic police acting on specific information they were getting regarding Saji Mohan about him and his partners was of lime being replaced for heroin in the drug seizes made during various raids. With the help of an informer, Mohan was found to be selling the potent drug back in the market. A decorated officer of the force, Mohan's greed for a lavish life style brought about his downfall. 3. SPS Rathore Ruchika Girhotra seemed to have come back from the dead to ask for justice for all the trouble meted out to her by this man. While holding the post of Director Vigilance and Security, he molested a class ten student and then attempted to get away with the crime. Cases involving high level officers threaten to derail the nation's credibility and affect its path to economic boom. It was a gruesome case of misuse of power by which the highly place police officer even attempted to destroy the family's identity and existence. Ironically, Rahtore today is a free man as Ruchika Girhotra's father and brother withdrew all cases on June 2nd, 2012, only to give up the fight for justice. In the courts Rathore was only fined mere Rs 1000 when the case was decided. 2. Ravi Kant Sharma   This was a classic case of a perfect murder gone horribly wrong. Shivani Bhatnagar was murdered by accomplices of Ravi Kant Sharma, on 23rd January, 1999. She was a journalist with Indian Express and had fallen for the promises of a great future, with a married man. His reactions to their new born baby irked her and she was left with the last option of blackmailing him to agree. Sharma was accused for murdering here, a crime for he was convicted in March 2008. The convicted police officer has been released from jail and now has the audacity to ask for being re instated in the police force. 1. Gurdial Singh Singh along with Rajya Sabha MP Masood hatched a conspiracy, to get undeserving candidates seats in MBBS. Gurdial who was holding the position of Resident Commissioner of Tripura at that time, misused his power and position, in collaboration with Masood, to get candidates from influential families and political backgrounds enrolled for a MBBS course. The two of them along with other accomplices were convicted and sent to jail term of 4 years. Besides Gurdial Singh, 11 candidates who were accomplices to the crime were also sent to jail for a year. This was a classic case of misuse of the system by highly placed public servants and how it was hurting the country's growth. 7 Reasons Why Many Indian Bureaucrats Choose To Be Corrupt Posted: 14 Jan 2014 12:30 AM PST The biggest word in Indian politics today is corruption. With the win of Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, the debate over corruption in India has been rekindled. Politicians are expected to be corrupt because Indian politics attracts a certain type of people who you would expect to be corrupt and greedy, besides being uneducated, illiterate and a lot of times outright criminals. But, have you wondered why so many intelligent educated bureaucrats also give in and become corrupt? Sure, there are a lot of honest civil servants who have been openly fighting the system, but the rest of the system is no doubt plagued by corruption. Here’s my reasoning about why this is so. 7. Disillusioned During the Selection of Civil Services First of all, people who get into civil services have to clear the UPSC exams. That means going through at least 2 to 3 years of voluntary isolation, rigorous studying and cramming of useless facts and a traumatizing interview process. When after all this they don’t clear in the first or second attempt, and when they see people worse than them getting selected while they are pushed aside unceremoniously, they can get a little disillusioned by the whole idea of serving the country through civil services. By the time they qualify and finish the 1 year training, they are ready to serve their personal interests. 6. Entry into Civil Services through Bribery Those people who clear the exams and interviews by giving huge sum of money as bribes, have no choice but to take bribes and be corrupt to make back the money they have ‘invested’. They have to make it back plus a good amount of interest. Once they get used to being corrupt there is no turning back. 5. Peer Pressure Another factor is that of peer pressure. Their own batch mates and seniors all around them try to convince them that being corrupt and operating within the system is the best thing to do. Do not underestimate this peer pressure. The peers create this pressure so as to feel good about themselves when their friends too become corrupt. And the friends find it very hard to resist this pressure. 4. Political Pressure Those who resist pressure and try to stay honest face opposition from day one. The whole system is so rotten that nothing happens without bribes and corruption. Politicians then apply pressure on these honest people to become corrupt so as to facilitate the system. This too is a great amount of pressure that very few can resist. 3. Fear of Transfers Those who try to resist the political pressure are threatened with transfers to departments that are completely hopeless and to places that are not livable and unsafe. A lot of people then choose to save their career by giving in to the system while others decide to quit and leave the system all together. Those who continue 2. Personal Greed Let’s not discount personal greed as a motivation. You get selected into civil services and you get married and you start a family and it can be normal to become a little greedy. You hang out with politicians and businessmen and you want your family to have the same amount of luxuries and opulence. Greed can turn even the most intelligent and educated man into a corrupt man. 1. Acceptance of Defeat Against the Corrupt System And finally if nothing else works and they continue to stay honest and continue to fight the system, sooner or later they’ll realize that they can’t beat the system. They’ll watch their batch mates moving ahead in life while they are working in some remote region. And they’ll see that all their stress and hard work is of no use as the system hasn’t changed at all. All this will eventually have them accept defeat and they’ll become a part of the system. If not as someone who is willingly corrupt, then at least as someone who has stopped fighting the corruption.
