6 Indian Folk Dances A Foreigner Must Watch Posted: 04 Jan 2014 01:30 AM PST Folk dance is a broad term that describes many simple Indian dances that are performed to either express joy or celebrate a welcoming event like wedding, arrival of new baby, festivals, and many other joyous occasions. Though the steps of the dance are much simpler than classical dance, they are a delight to watch. The folk dancers carry the performance with such gusto that you will not be able to resist tapping your own feet and swaying with the music. The folk dances are usually performed in groups, with specific colorful costumes adorned by all the participants. Foreign tourists love to watch the folk dances of India when they are on tour. Not many are familiar with all the different types of folk dances that are performed on different occasions, in India. Though all the folk dances of India are equally attractive, these are 6 Indian folk dances that a foreigner must watch. 6. Yakshagana Yakshagana is the folk dance that is very popular even to this day in the Malenadu and coastal region of Karnataka. The amazing on stage performance of artists with unique make-up is usually carried on from dusk to dawn. The costume, dance and music of Yakshagana is completely independent of influences from any other art forms of India. Dollu Kunita is another equally famous folk dance of Karnataka. 5. Garba Garba is the folk dance of Gujarat, usually performed to mark the celebrations of Navratri, celebrations that lasts nine nights and also during marriage ceremonies. The dancers wear bright colored costumes which are further brightened by the mirror embroidery and jewelry. The dance honors the deity Durga. Raas is said is said to be the energetic and frenzied form of garba dance performed in honor of deity Krishna. 4. Bihu dance Bihu dance is a very aggressive Assamese dance performed by both the males and females celebrating the festival of Bihu. Decked in traditional Assamese clothing, the dancers express their joy through brisk steps with equally fast hand movements to match them. The performance is enhanced by the amazing Bihu music which is composed by traditional musical instruments such as xutuli, taal, gogona and dhol. 3. Ghoomar Ghoomar is the folk dance of Rajasthan performed by women dressed in long full flowing skirts and veils. These dancers are accompanied by men and women who lend music to the dance. Recently the dance has gained popularity worldwide, making into the lists of top local dances of the world. The graceful swirling dance of ghoomar has aesthetic, as well as spiritual appeal to it. 2. Bhangra Though the title given to this folk dance is quite new, the dance of the Punjabis celebrating the harvest is quite ancient. The dance form which has incorporated steps not only from other Punjabi traditional folk dances but also western and other cultures has gained popularity everywhere. The passionate and relaxed robust movement of these dancers appeals to each and everyone. Today, the dance form has entered the fitness industry as well. 1. Chhau Chhau is a very popular folk dance in the states of Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The brightly attired dancers blend both the dance and martial arts, performing many mock combats during the performance. It also involves imitation of birds, animals and chores of village housewives. Unlike other dance forms, this particular folk dance is passed on from the family of dancers who are trained to perform it in perfection. Why Engineering Is So Much Better Than Going To Medical School In India? Posted: 03 Jan 2014 11:09 PM PST Ever since the dawn of time, or a few years after that, the debate has been raging on about which stream is better, engineering or medicine. In India it has become an either-or option, unless you are from a business family, in which case you go for commerce, or are too dumb to do anything but arts. I am an engineer and here’s why I think that engineering is much better than medicine in India. 1. Engineering Means No Blood If you can’t stand the sight of blood then you are like me and have no option but to go for engineering. If you choose medicine you’ll have to deal with blood, open wounds and all that gooey stuff for the rest of your life. 2. No Need to Cram Stuff I’ve always liked physics and chemistry more than biology because you can understand these subjects and don’t have to cram too much stuff. But biology seems to me to be all about cramming impossibly long names. If you are not a crammer then engineering is definitely the way to go. 3. More Colleges for Engineering There are a lot of engineering colleges in India and very few medical colleges. That means it is easier to get into an engineering college than a medical school. Now Indians are going to Ukraine and other such countries to get their MBBS. It’s much easier to clear IITJEE or AIEEE and get a decent engineering degree. 4. Complete Degree in 4 Years If you choose engineering you’ll complete your degree in 4 years. But if you choose medical you’ll take at least 5 years and even after that you’ll have to study much more and do internship and compulsory service and what not before you can call yourself a doctor. 5. More Fun During 4 Years of College Let’s be honest, you will have a lot more fun in an engineering college than a medical college. I mean who’d want to spend a decade cramming boring stuff when you can have so much more fun and get a degree in just 4 years. 6. Get a Job on Graduation After just 4 years you’ll graduate and can get a job straight out of the college. If you get into the right college you’ll get campus placement and start earning immediately. 7. More Options After Graduation If you want to go for higher studies there are so many options after graduation as an engineer. In medicine you have to go for higher studies almost as a compulsion if you want to get ahead in your career or you’ll just be a general practitioner. 8. Get to the Top of the Field at a Young Age In engineering you can get to the top your field in 10 to 15 years. You’ll be in your 30s when you can be a chief engineer of some big project. But in medicine you’ll have to work hard for many years before you get to the top. You’ll be well into your 50s by then. 9. No Need to Marry Your Batchmate Doesn’t it seem strange that so many medical students end up marrying their batchmates even before they pass out? You don’t have to worry about that as an engineer because for starters there won’t be so many girls in engineering anyways! You can get a job in 4 years and live the bachelor lifestyle for a while before you get tied to a ball and chain. 10. No Compulsory Rural Posting It’s compulsory for MBBS students to go and serve in a rural location before they even get their degree! For a whole year! Engineers don’t have to worry about anything like that. 11. Slightly Less Busy Work Life I won’t lie to you as today everyone has a busy work life. Even as an engineer you’ll have a busy work life. If you go for an MBA then your life will be even busier. But nothing compares to the medical student whose life gets busy from the moment they start preparing for PMT. 12. Nobody will Blame You if You Seek a Job in a Foreign Country There are so many engineers in India that nobody cares if you go to work in America or Europe. But when a doctor goes to the first world, everybody blames them for leaving their homeland when there is such a shortage of doctors. As an engineer you won’t have to deal with that shame.
