The New York Of The Godfather Looks Very Different Now Posted: Most of the shooting of The Godfather was done in New York. The legendary film has made the shooting locations a Mecca for its fans. A location scout goes around the Big Apple to discover what is left of those unforgettable sites and discovers a touch of nostalgia in the new.
The opening scene of The Godfather begins with the wedding of his daughter Connie. This was the location then. This is how it looks now at 110 Longfellow Avenue in Staten Island. But the walls as you see here in the picture are not real. They were set up to give a different impression. This is how it originally looks. One of the prime reasons behind the selection of this house was the huge lawn that is still there. Genco Olive Oil, Don Vito's business. This was filmed in what was once the heart of Little Italy at 128 Mott Street, known as The Mietz Building. Michael Corleone and his girlfriend Kay Adams Christmas shop at the Best & Co. Department Store on Fifth Avenue at 51st Street. Today the 51-story Olympic Tower stands at the site. Luca Brasi walking down a hotel hallway. This shot is the rear entrance to the Hotel Edison on West 46th Street between 7th & 8th. Don Corleone steps out of the Genco offices and crosses the street toward 135-137 Mott Street. He stops to buy fruit from a vendor at 137 Mott Street (note the Jake "Raging Bull" La Motta poster in the window). A Chinese pharmacy has taken over. The Radio City Music Hall then.,, …and now. Michael and Kay exit the side entrance on West 50th Street. Kay notices a headline on the newsstand. The two run across the street. Clemenza's house… …and here it is today, located at 1999 East 5th Street on the edge of the Gravesend section in Brooklyn. An enemy of Don Vito is killed here in New Jersey. It is today known as Freedom Way, which cuts through Liberty State Park. Michael goes to his father's hospital – Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx – and stays guard out front, helping to stave off a second assassination attempt. The location at 140th Street & Southern Boulevard has since been demolished. Jack Dempsey's, a famous restaurant owned by the boxer at 1619 Broadway, where Michael enters his family business. Up until recently, it was a computer store. Today, it's empty. The bathroom where Michael finds the gun… …has been completely changed. Sonny, Michael’s older brother, is killed. The location is an abandoned runway left over from Mitchel AFB. Don Vito dies dies in his garden while playing with his grandson. Today, there's a pool where the garden would have been. Corleone's funeral was shot in Queens' Calvary Cemetery. Michael starts killing off his enemies one by one. Barzini is whacked by a disguised police officer on the steps of the New York Supreme Court building in Foley Square. At Corleone’s funeral. In one of the most iconic scenes from the film, Carlo is seen hanging out on a stoop wearing an orange outfit. That still exists today at 118th Street east of Mt. Pleasant Ave. You can even see the original width of the steps stretching beyond the new brick railings. Credit: Nick Carr, a movie location scout based out of New York. 8 Battles Fought By The Valiant Shivaji Every Patriotic Indian Should Know About Posted: Born in a prominent warrior clan of 'Bhonsale' within the Maratha clan system, Shivaji was one of the prominent members of the royal clan. His mother named him in honour of the goddess 'Shivai'. Born in the hill-fort of Shivneri in Pune district, Shivaji is considered as the founder of Maratha Empire. Shivaji established a competent civil rule and pioneered the guerrilla warfare methods. Using guerrilla tactics, Shivaji protected his legacy from the Mughals who were his main challengers. But in order to establish his progressive rule, Shivaji fought many battles during his life and handfuls of those are described as under: 8. Battle of Mysore Plateau (1677)This battle in southern India was fought on 26 November 1677 between Shivaji and his stepbrother Venkoji. Shivaji claimed victory in the battle and seized most of the Mysore plateau. But after an agreement Shivaji returned most of the seized territory back to his stepbrother. In return, Venkoji accepted number of conditions from Shivaji for ruling his regime and applied them in public administration. 7. Battle of Nesari (1674)After defeating Bahlol Khan in 1674, Prataprao Gujar released this Mughal commander. But Shivaji learned about Khan's camping at Nesari near Kolhapur. Prataprao was the Commander-in-Chief of Maratha forces and he attacked surprisingly on Bhalol Khan. Prataprao lost his life in the battle along with some soldiers. But this act, lead to the safety of Maratha army and Balol Khan was later defeated under the leadership of Anaji and Hambirao Mohite. 6. Battle of Sinhagad (1670)On 4 February 1670 Shivaji sent his trusted general Tanaji Malusare on a mission to capture Kondana fort, which was still under the Mughal control. With very small army as compared to Mughals, Tanaji killed Uday Bhan Rathod (protector of the fort) and established Maratha control over the Kondana. During the battle, Tanaji lost his life and this fort was renamed by Shivaji as 'Sinhagad' to honour Tanaji's bravery and sacrifice. 5. Battle of Umberkhind (1664)Shaista Khan sent an Uzbek general, Kartalab Khan to gain control over Konkan region on 3 February 1661. The Mughal troops were 30,000 in strength and planning for a surprise attack on Shivaji. But Maratha forces ambushed on Mughals in the dense forests of Umberkhind, resulting defeat for Mughal army. In 1664, Shivaji also sacked a wealthy Mughal trading centre today known as Surat. Shivaji again in 1670 ransacked this city. 4. Battle of Pune (Lal Mahal) (1663)Shaista Khan with a strong army of over 3 lakh seized Pune and established his residence at Shivaji's place of Lal Mahal. In April 1663, Shivaji with a band of 200 Marathas infiltrated Pune using a wedding procession to cover their identity. The surprise attack on Shaista Khan resulted in loss of his thumb. His one son got killed, but Khan managed a narrow escape. 3. Battle of Pawan Khind (1660)After Maratha's easy victory in the first two battles, this time Mughals were fully prepared. Mughals formed an alliance with Adilshah to address the rising power of Shivaji. Bijapuri general Siddi Jauhar planned to attack Shivaji on southern border in association of Mughals from the north side. Shivaji's forces were encamped at Panhala fort near Kohlapur before the start of battle. Enemy forces besieged supply routes to Panhala fort in mid-1660; this caused a huge problem for Marathas. Besides this, the artillery support to Mughals was provided by the British forces. Marathas found them in great trouble but somehow, Shivaji managed to escape from the fort. The British support to his Mughal enemies angered him and he thought of taking revenge from East India Company in future. 2. Battle of Kolhapur (1659)Bijapur's Abyssinian general Rustam Jamam commanded a strong army of 10,000 against Shivaji in this battle. On 28 December 1659, Shivaji with a strength of 5,000 Marathas attacked Bijapuri army near Kolhapur. Shivaji divided his army into three parts. Full frontal attack on the centre of enemy forces was full of surprise to the enemy. This strategy worked and combatant forces were defeated by a sound margin. The commander of enemy force managed to flee from the battlefield. This huge defeat alarmed Aurangzeb, who named Shivaji as the 'Mountain Rat'. 1. Battle in the Foothill of Pratapgad (1659)On 10 November 1659, Shivaji signaled his troops for a surprise attack on Bijapuri forces. Shivaji's forces in the battle decisively defeated the forces of Bijapur Sultanat. After winning the battle, Shivaji imprisoned two sons of Afzal Khan. Afzal Khan was sent for the battle by Adilshah (chief of Adilshahi kingdom at Bijapur). Afzal Khan sustained many injuries during a scuffle with Shivaji, leading to his death on the same day. This victory made Shivaji a legend in the Maratha community. Mughal emperor Aurangzeb identified as a great challenger and decided to help Shivaji's enemies. Social Reforms Undertaken By Swami Dayanand Saraswati Posted: A native of Gujarat, Swami Dayanand Saraswati opposed many oppressed practices of Hindu tradition and insisted upon going back to the Vedas. He worked for abolishing several social stigmas such as child marriage and Casteism. He not only helped society get rid of a myriad of orthodox practices, but also built the social structure for future reforms in India. Swami Dayanand Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj (An Organization) on April 7, 1875 in Mumbai, with the aim to promote noble ideas, which are universally true for all mankind. The Arya Samaj advocates peaceful and progressive human living. Swami used Arya Samaj as a platform to launch his campaign against social evils that were prevalent in Hindu society at that time. Let's take a look below, at some major reforms introduced by him: 5. Health Reforms – Making healthcare accessible to poorMost of the Indians in 19th century were poor and no health services were within their reach. Introduction of games such as Hath Pehchan (hand recognition), Chun Chunav (choices) combined the benefits of physical and mental exercise. It helped boost concentration level among children. Arya Samaj provided useful instructions on elementary rules of health and how an individual can remain hygienic. 4. Shuddhi – Reconversion to HinduismThis unique ritual known as Shuddhi was performed on those Hindus, who were converted to other religion against their will. Reconversion to Hindu religion was made possible by a purificatory ceremonial process through this ritual. Later, followers of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, in particular, Swami Shraddhanand, worked extensively throughout North India to boast the efforts through Sangathan (consolidation) movement of Hinduism. The movement soon became popular and was carried out throughout India. 3. Encouraged remarriage of widows – With special emphasis on female educationArya Samaj worked for the cause of women education through schools by the early 1890s. In addition to that, Swami Dayanand Saraswati encouraged the remarriage of widows and raised his voice against this social stigma. The organization launched societies to support and practice such marriages. As a result, remarriage of virgin widows was accepted by most of the Punjabi Hindus in late 19th century. 2. Opposed child marriage – For an educated man needs an educated womanArya Samaj under the leadership of Swami Dayanand Saraswati opposed the practice of child marriage. This objective was achieved through the opening of new schools and making society aware about the benefits of education system. Can you imagine kids as young as 10-12 years getting married? Yes, that's what happened some hundred years ago in India. It was bad. Dayanand said that 'an educated man needs an educated wife'. This message slowly found its roots in the society and child marriage was started to be considered as an evil. 1. Educational reforms – For the upliftment of the massesDayanand made his first attempt on social reforms by establishment of gurukuls or Vedic schools. These schools were highly focused on Vedic values and culture to its students. This initiative represented the first practical application of Swami's vision of social reforms. In place of idol worship, students were introduced with the concept of Sandhya (Swadhyaya: here, student's sitting together forming a group shares their daily thoughts) every evening. This introduced a social regeneration in terms of Vedic culture in India. Swami, through schools wanted to abolish hereditary and uplift the masses by means of education. DAV Schools were result of this reform. The post Social Reforms Undertaken By Swami Dayanand Saraswati appeared first on TopYaps. |

These 7 Things Could Have Happened If French And Not British Ruled India Posted: Firstly, had India been ruled by any other country apart from England, it would have not been a different nation altogether! India has had a major influence of the British rule to become a nation it is today. The British were instrumental in bringing about certain important (good, bad and ugly) changes in the administrative policies and culture of our nation. But, what if it was France and not England that ruled the land of Vedas at a time almost every nutcase seated on a throne, big or small, in the world was busy fighting with others? Let's find out! 7. No development under colonial rule!France is known to have been bad rulers in their colonies unlike the Britishers who wanted an extended nation. In the 19th century France invested just about 6% of their external investment in their Empire compared to Britain's 22%. It hardly gives enough to establish industries and other aspects of development. The British undeniably have made quite an improvement in certain areas under their rule, most importantly bringing railways to India. 6. Imbibe French culture: fashion and cinema! The French take immense pride in their national and cultural identity. The Britishers are comparatively few steps behind! French culture therefore would have made a greater impact on our culture and selfhood too! We would have been far more fashionable than we are today! 'High-Fashion' or 'haute-couture' as they call in France is the concept of high fashion which would have made our mindset keener on dressing up! Cinema is also a very essential part of their being. That, we already are! 5. Snails for food!Yes, the French have snails and oysters and rabbits and the list could go on! One of their favorite dishes is 'shorshe-rabbit' which is cooked in the same style as Bengal's famous 'shorshe-ilish', a dish made with mustard and hilsa fish! Red Wine would have been a staple in our diet and also for other occasions! We would have retained, as we do now too, our own dishes, but would also have happened to love these! Smoking would also have been kind of a staple, which would not have been a good one for sure! 4. Less interference in local governance. The French, as we know from their rule over Indo-China, ruled over the nation yet left the local kings and rulers rule their towns and cities without interfering. Top English officials let local Indian rulers live and have fun but they didn't allow them to take full control of finances, security or defenses. This might have led to less violence in India if British rule is to be compared. The British had not implied this rule due to which mass uprisings were thankfully higher than it could have been under The French! 3. We would have been free of Colonial Rule earlier! The French as we know from our history books were not able rulers and administrators. They lacked foresight and intellectual astuteness. For them, to rule a country as huge as India, would have been a tough affair! The British with sheer capability of man-power and intelligent governance were able to hold the country together under their rule for two centuries. The Allied invasion, German invasion, Franco-Prussian war, all in the 19th century would have definitely made an impact on its rule in India and ousting them would not have been difficult! 2. We wouldn't be an English crazy nationEnglish is now an undisputed international language in the world. No, this is not just because of Hollywood. But, we are sure to be lucky to have learnt English rather than French! Had French been our official language, it would have been quite a task to carry out discussions on matters of business, politics or anything else throughout the world! Even Chinese are now obsessed with the idea of learning English Be glad you are not this guy trying to understand what the hell this language from first world means. Not being able to communicate in English would have resulted in a slower growth rate of our country. Few regions in India like Pondicherry and Chandannagore to name a few, which were French settlements, have French as their first language in schools. 1. No Cricket for us – we wouldn't be a cricket crazy nation!Had France been the ruling country here, there could never have been an upsurge of playing cricket in our country. We might have had Sachin (if the grand scheme of Universe wasn't disturbed by mere change of colonizers) but it's unlikely he'd be revered as 'God of Cricket. Cricket was actually imported from Britain! Would you now be keen on watching FIFA Football World Cup instead of ICC Cricket World Cup! Of course, not. Who cares where we got this game from as long as we like it and beat the shit out of everyone else, right? But, had it been French who ruled India, the most important games for us could have been soccer, cycling and athletics. Imagine living without cricket! Not good! Mrs. And Mr. Kumar From Panipat Present Their Love Story Custom Designed By Facebook Posted: 29 Jan 2014 05:24 AM PST "Love is a universal phenomenon" is what our text books said, when we were in school. Little did we imagine that man will devise virtual wonders and a single click will pop up innumerable lists of mates to choose from. In the real world success of such unions are rare, betting on whether they will last or not is the trick question you will ask yourself after you read their story. 1. Adriana Peral aka Mrs. Kumar, had never achieved major success in her life, when it came to love and men. Not a new story. Most fortyish Americans face this dilemma and resort to buying fancy dogs, innumerous cats or travelling to Thailand to get their sex changed.
2. But she didn't do any such things, she started trolling Facebook, looking for 'true love'. In February 2013, she started getting attention from Mr. Mukesh Kumar, from the mystical land of elephants, snake charmers, kings and queens, India. That's how most foreigners perceive India. 3. Mukesh lived in an Indian village, leading a very normal life, every Indian farmer lives. He had very basic education and spoke broken English. But when his friends who were 'desis' settled or working abroad, came back and narrated stories of the foreign lands to him, his eyes lit up.
4. We're assuming he did not have the means to travel to a metro, so settling or going abroad was an impossible feat for him to achieve. But, the world could come to him, at least virtually.
5. Mukesh joined Facebook as all his friends talked about it all the time and bragged about the endless possibilities of meeting girls from anywhere in the world on it. 6. After several failed attempts to get noticed by the opposite sex, he found the profile of Adriana. She was the perfect personification of a 'gori' for him. White skinned, blue eyes, blond hair and ready to mingle!
7. After letting go of her apprehensions of people from the third world, Adriana warmed up to Mukesh and started chatting with him regularly. She loved the attention she was getting, from the doting boy friend she had found online.
8. He couldn't believe his luck in what he had found and made it a point to be in touch with her regularly. We really wonder what must have been going through his head at that time. Can only shake my head in wonder! 9. After decrypting his messages in broken English for quite a few weeks, one day she was shocked out of her boots, when Mukesh Kumar called from his 'pind' and confessed his love for her. 10. His persistence finally won over her heart, after talking over the phone for a few more weeks and she decided to take a complete U-turn in her life. She was 41 and he was 25, when cupid struck them. 11. There were mixed reactions, mostly apprehensive, when she broke the news to her family. The decision to leave her 25-year-old daughter must have not been an easy one. 12. Others warned her that this could be an online scam and there may not be somebody in real. But she had made up her mind, to follow her heart and take the plunge, come what may. 13. In August she arrived in India, to be greeted by a devoted Mukesh, at the Delhi airport. They got married in November, 2013. But the real shock was yet to come.
14. Life was a complete reversal to her life in California, in the village of Popran. No guide book in the world could have made her ready for it. 15. At home, she has to adorn the role of a perfect housewife overnight. Her day starts with cleaning the house, washing utensils, washing clothes and tending to the animals, to name a few.
16. From wearing body hugging, deep plunging necklines, she has now been transformed to wearing traditional Indian clothes.
17. From somebody who use to love clubbing and going partying, she has readily accepted an outside closet size toilet, with a bucket and a living room that becomes an animal shelter in the night. 18. She essentially makes cow pat cakes, or a local fuel substitute made with cow dung, manually. 19. High heels got replaced by flat sandals and covering her head, part of her personality. Make up seems like an unnecessary cost, which might have to go, once the stocks finish. 20. The celebrity status of having an in-house foreigner is soon fading in the village. She is in the process of getting accepted, due to her efforts at looking like the rest and learning to speak in Hindi. 21. The pair has the blessings and heartfelt acceptance of Mukesh's mother, who has been freed of the shackles of household chores, by her daughter-in-law from US. 22. For now the couple is very happy and they look like they were meant to be. Soon, they want to start their own family and live happily ever after.
23. Somewhere in some corner of her heart, Mrs. Kumar is hoping that one day she can fly back to where she came from, with Mukesh and family of course. 24. We hope this bubble never bursts, and sets an example for those who have stopped believing in love. The true kind.
