You’re Missing A Lot In Your Life If You Haven’t Watched These Poignant Hindi Movies of 70s

Posted:

The 1970s saw the rise of two phenomena of Bollywood; one was the blockbuster film Sholay, which broke and held on to many records for decades and second was the rise of Amitabh Bacchan as India's intimidating Superstar.  It was also the decade when Kishore Kumar reigned supreme, after lingering in the industry for few decades. Though you have watched some of the movies separately with your friends, family and romantic partner, you still love watching them all over again. Here is the list of 6 such great Hindi movies of 70s.

6. Blackmail (1973)

A romantic and thriller film has the most touching song “Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas Tum Rehti Ho” sung by Kishore Kumar as its highlight. Starring Dharmendra, Raakhee and Shatrughan Sinha, the movie was welcomed warm heartedly by fans. Dharmendra and Raakhee made beautiful pair in the movie, and the audience could not wait for their misunderstanding to clear so that they could see them happily together.

5. Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978)

The movie was so loved by people so much that they slept at the theatres to get tickets for the show. It was the third biggest hit of the decade behind Sholay and Bobby. The highlight of the movie was the super screen presence of by then well established Amitabh Bacchan who won hearts of millions of movie goers. The movie also had excellent evergreen songs as a back-up for wonderful story, good direction and amazing performance. Unfortunately, the movie did not win any awards though it was nominated for many.

4. Chupke Chupke (1975)

I wish such subtle comedies would hit screen today. Unfortunately, the talent of making you laugh without the actors behaving like jokers does not come by now. The comedy of errors in the movie makes you giggle even when the movie has ended. The Hindi vs. English scenes between Dharmendra and Om-Prakrash are one of the most hilarious moments you will come across in Bollywood.

3. Deewar (1975)

This movie belonged heart and soul to its leading star Amitabh Bacchan. The powerful dialogues delivered in the booming voice of AB, endeared it to the heart of the viewers. Shashi Kapoor and other actors lent equal support to the movie, but they were clearly overshadowed by the character of Vijay Verma who could make audience shed tears every time they watched him. The box office superhit movie won Filmfare Best Movie Award of 1975 in addition to six other Filmfare Awards. The film established AB's image as the angry young man of Bollywood.

 2. Bobby (1973)

The captivating beauty of young Dimple Kapadia and freshness of Rishi Kapoor gave their romance a special touch which could not be repeated ever again on screen, though many tried their hands at it. The teen romance plotted in the backdrop of clash between rich and poor became the second highest grosser of 1970s behind Sholay. Among the awards won by the movie is Filmfare Best Actor Award – Rishi Kapoor and Filmfare Best Actress Award – Dimple Kapadia.

1. Sholay (1975)

Recognized as the best entertainer ever made in Bollywood, Sholay is considered the greatest boxoffice hit as well. It is one of the movies where the villain got equal recognition as the lead stars, or we can say Gabbar Singh outdid everyone. The movie had strong script with great star cast to support the story, endless action, romance, revenge, music and many more to offer the viewers. Surprisingly the film was dubbed a flop in the initial first two weeks, before word of mouth made viewers throng the theaters. The film will remain an epic of Indian Cinema forever.

Arvind Kejriwal is a great leader, not a liar. Or is he?

A video posted on YouTube raises a disturbing question on the integrity of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. With two contradictory statements from the AAP chief on the issue of a dissenting MLA Vindo Binny, the video leaves it upon viewers to judge Kejriwal. One thing is clear: as a chief minister, Kejriwal should always choose his words carefully especially since the media will be watching his every move.

In the recent times, the political arena has gone through hard turmoil due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Of course each one of us is acquainted with the happenings around, be it controversies around NaMo or the uprising of the Aam Admi Party. The sudden rise also comes with its share of suspicion, and yet somewhere down the line, we all hope the party continues to flourish and doesn't perish like these political parties, we are telling you about in what follows:

5. The Socialist Democratic Party

The Socialist Democratic Party was founded in 1959 in Andhra Pradesh with P.V.G. Raju elected as the party chairman. This party was formed to bring people of all social classes together and to eliminate all the inequalities that ruled the state. In fact, people from different parties came together to form the Socialist Democratic Party.

However, soon, the Democratic Party members deserted the party; and, a year later, P.V.G Raju merged the party, due to much inconsistencies and lack of a strong footage, with the Indian National Congress. On December 10th, 1959, the party was legally dissolved by the Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

4. Janata Party

The People's Party or the Janata Party was formed by an amalgamation of several other parties as a sign of disapproval to Indira Gandhi's imposition of State Emergency in 1975. In fact, in 1977, the party defeated the mammoth Indian National Congress and formed the first ever non congress political party to govern India. After coming to power, the Janata Government put on hold many decrees of the Emergency Area and started official investigations into all the abuses of/during the Emergency period.

In short, it was living to its name: "Janata Party". AAP's sudden formation, in a way, reminds many of the Janata Party. However, although numerous ideological decisions were enforced and taken, the Janata party, still in its nascent stage, wasn't able to shoot off the National Problems and hence, was declared a failure. Later, in August 2013, the party (which had almost been erased) merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

3. The Bangla Congress

As the name suggests, the Bangla Congress was a regional party formed in the state of West Bengal. It was formed in 1960 due to a rift in the Indian National Congress in West Bengal, and became an instant favorite among the masses. In fact, in 1967, the party co-governed the state along with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI (M)] twice: once from March 15th to November 2nd, 1967; and the next period was between 25th February to 19th March, 1970.

However, though its ideological claims were high and promising, the party couldn’t stand by their words and faced a rapid decline. Finally, it again reunited with the Indian National Congress. Their sudden arrival into the political scenario reminded us so much of AAP that we couldn’t stop ourselves from including the party.

2. The All-India Trinamool Congress

The All India Trinamool Congress or TMC or AITMC is a sub-national state-level political party, which is currently the ruling party of West Bengal. It was formed by the current Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee and is currently the sixth largest party in Lok Sabha with 19 seats.

The party was formed as a defiance against the crude politics of the then ruling party of West Bengal, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI (m)]. After its inception, it remained with the INC for two years and it was only in 1997 that it got its new identity. After continuous struggle against the powerful CPIM, TMC was finally able to beat their more-than 27 years' regime IN 2011.

Fallen Journalists Of India: Who Made It Big And Couldn’t HOLD IT

Posted:

Many of us have dreamt, at some point of our lives, of being a journalist. This is not only because the profession offers an assortment of "real" adventures but also, and most importantly, the profession demands unearthing the truth to the world by fighting against all odds. In fact, in India there have been lots of journalists, who have excelled in the field and paved solid ground for budding journalists. However, due to a few journalists, like the one's listed below, the profession has of late attracted a lot of controversies.

Here's telling you about fallen journalists of Indian who once made it big, but couldn't hold it:

3. Barkha Dutt

A television journalist and television reporter, Barkha Dutt started her career with NDTV after attaining a Master's degree in Mass Communication from Jamia Milia Islamia. However, she shot to an instant fame with her on-spot reporting of the Kargil war, which included an interview with Captain Vikram Batra. In fact this reporting brought her much accolades and fame which included even the Padmashree Award among others. However, this fairy tale rise of Barkha Dutt did attract numerous controversies as well.

In a well known book, Barkha Dutt was described as a "controversial" and "pro Sonia Gandhi" journalist. Barkha's well known description of the Gujrathis as "traditionally effete people" goes on to validate her "pro Sonia" image. Post this, the infamous Radia Tape Controversy proved to be another lag in her flourishing career. Although she has been absolutely vocal about her apologies, still she didn't manage to regain the status which she once enjoyed. Besides, she is also known to have partnered Rahul Gandhi in the shameful UP elections disaster. All this tells us how a much celebrated and renowned journalist doomed her own fate though she still enjoys the status of being a "brilliant" journalist—brilliant, indeed, ehh?

2. Vir Sanghvi

An Indian print and television journalist and a talk show host, Vir Sanghvi completed his studies in politics, philosophy and economics from the Oxford University. Among the other accolades that the profession ascribed to him, he has also got the record of being the youngest editor in the history of Indian journalism—at the age of 22, he became the editor of India's first city magazine, India Today. After that, he shuffled between numerous prestigious media houses (national as well as regional), making a stand for himself among the best journalists in India.

In fact, he was one of those few journalists who did every kind of shows—from serious political talk shows to a light-hearted cookery show. However, like Barkha Dutt, he too was accused of being a pro-Sonia Gandhi journalist. He was even recorded calling Narendra Modi "a mass murderer". Again, like Barkha Dutt, Sanghvi too was connected to the infamous Nira Radia Case, and was reportedly caught saying, "What kind of story do you want?" In simple words, he was just being a pure gambling businessman and nothing else. However, unlike Barkha, he didn't apologize directly but rather claimed the tapes as insignificant and made-up. Well, Mr. Sanghvi, you only led us to believe in TV news reports, right?

1. Tarun Tejpal

An eminent journalist and one of the flag bearers of the much acclaimed Tehelka.com, Tarun Tejpal is not only a senior journalist but also a novelist, philanthropist and even a publisher! After graduating from Punjab University, Tarun Tejpal started his career in the print medium with The Indian Express. Since then he kept ascending the steps to success, and in 2010, he was rewarded with the prestigious International Press Institute's India Phase Award. In fact, in 2006, The Guardian termed him as a "pioneer of a brand of sting journalism which has transformed the Indian media".

However, things grew sour in November 2013, when Tehelka reported their staff that Tejpal was renouncing the post for 6 months—the reason being a sexual assault case charged against him by a fellow, junior colleague who's, in fact, Tejpal's daughter's friend. The case received intense media coverage and importance, and within few days, we found him behind the bars with the Goa police filing a non-bailable rape warrant against him. Ironically, on February 2013, Tehelka had come out with a detailed report on the increasing sexual violence against women in a special issue of the same.
