In Depth Look at the Australian Open Posted: Australian Open is one of the four major tournaments that are collectively known as "Grand Slam" in tennis – the other events being the French Open, the US Open and the Wimbledon. A few things to learn about the functioning of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Posted: 17 Jan 2014 01:23 AM PST Indian political system got a whole new definition to itself in the December 2013 elections. Who knew that an ordinary man like Arvind Kejriwal could make such a huge difference in the system that has been carried on for several years? When he established his own party by the name of Aam Aadmi Party, nobody seemed to have much faith in it and it was taken as another fish in the pond. However, Kejriwal made sure that he not only proved the fact that this party was different than the others, but also ensured that people had faith in the same. The results of the elections made it very evident that he and his team were indeed successful in accomplishing their goals and that people could expect a change in the functioning of the system. The strategy that AAP used for their election campaign was the same as Obama used in USA, which seemed to be a breath of fresh air for the citizens of India. The fact that neither of the old and well-established political parties like Congress and BJP won majority votes of the people and a newly constructed party became the hegemon was surprising yet refreshing. What really won people's hearts was the approach towards them- there was a lot of door to door campaigning involved, not only by the members of the party but Kejriwal himself. Also, the fact that Kejriwal was an ordinary man himself and did not have any political background, voters believed that he will be able to understand and associate with their issues well. Last but not the least, the party consisted of a lot of youth volunteers which created a very enthusiastic vibe. Setting up new courts: The Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, NV Ramana, passed an order of 47 new courts being established in the national capital. It was impressive to know that the order as passed a day after Arvind Kejriwal was appointed as the Chief Minister of Delhi. The motive behind setting up these courts is to decrease the number of pending lawsuits and for trials to take place within reasonable time. These courts will work as six district court complexes and will look into heinous offences, civil matter as well as motor accident cases. 6. Transfer of Delhi Jal Board officials: About 800 officers of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) were transferred from their posts to filling points and water emergency departments on the orders of Arvind Kejriwal. He said that it was necessary to do so to ensure improvement and development in the delivery of services provided by these officials. All these officials are obligated to work in these new posts for at least a period of three years. He also passed orders to suspend a few officers on charges of accepting bribes, which was aired on television during a sting operation. 5. Bid farewell to the 'VIP' culture: During his election campaign, Kejriwal ensured that none of the MPs and MLAs of his party will take up government houses or cars with red lights or any other special treatment and he kept his promise after his election as the CM. He refused to accept any extraordinary luxury or treatment in the form of vehicles, security etc. His motive behind this was to not let go off the lifestyle of a common man that he followed before his election. 4. Shelter for the homeless: Even though there were shelters for the homeless set up by the government in power before AAP, thousands of people were found to be seeping on the roads in extremely cold weather conditions. Kejriwal ensured that new shelter homes were set up for the people without a home and that the functioning of the ones already existing was free of any kind of threats like robbery, harassment etc. that was reported. 3. Supplying free water: AAP government announced to supply almost 700 litres of water free daily to every household in Delhi. Once again, people who voted for AAP in the elections were satisfied to have chosen the correct person as their representative. The only question that was raised in front of Arvind Kejriwal was that whether this free water could be supplied to all the houses in the capital region or will there be some houses, especially the poor strata of the society, will be left out. This can only be guaranteed with time with everyone hoping for the best. 2. Reduction in electricity rates: Delhites received the most perfect New Year's gift they could have by Arvind Kejriwal in the form of reduction of electricity rates by 50%. His party had already fulfilled its promise of supplying 700 litres of free water daily to every household in Delhi. This news was like adding cherry on the cake for the citizens of the metropolitan city. 1. Introduction of an anti-corruption helpline: We are all well aware of Kejriwal's role and beliefs in regard to anti-corruption in the country. He was an active member of Anna Hazare's struggle to free the country from corruption and people who are a part of it. After his appointment as the Chief Minister, he announced the setting up of an anti-corruption helpline in the capital wherein people could call and complain against any government official asking them for a bribe or doing any other unprofessional act. People are supposed to record the conversation or the incident in a manner specified by Kejriwal himself during a press conference.
