6 ways to respond if someone is bullying you

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST

Bullying is an ugly behavior which is common among people of all ages. A timely response can stop bullies from giving you sleepless nights. This behavior takes its birth in childhood, which is the right time to nip it in the bud. If the parents and teachers make it clear that bullying is not acceptable, it will stop the behavior in its track. Unfortunately, if you are facing bullying from someone who was not stopped on time, then here are the six best ways to respond.

6. Do not indulge in self blame:

It is not your fault that you are being bullied. The bullies may make you feel that you invited their behavior with something you have done, or the way you are. Do not believe them. How they respond to you or anyone else for that matter is utterly their own responsibility. They choose the path of being bullies and it is their fault. Never allow them to make you believe otherwise. Though a bully appears to be brave and strong, in reality they are much weaker than you.

 5. Do not give in to anger or tears:

Your anger and tears are providing fuel to the bullies, and they get a feeling of mission accomplished through such a response. This is easier said than done as bullies love to touch and evoke your strongest emotions. But responding with anger or tears will show the bully that he/she has got to you.  It is possible that you will need an outlet for your emotions that has been troubled by the bullying behavior. Find a way to release that negative emotion in a positive way rather than feeding the bully with outburst in their presence.

4. Be strong and assertive:

Do not try to avoid looking the bully in the eye, because this shows them you are scared. Show your confidence in self by looking the bully straight in the eye and standing straight. Bullies will pick up your emotions through your body language. Once they sense an easy victim, they will pounce on you. They are not comfortable with people having as assertive body language and are afraid to look them in the eye. Take care not to provoke them though.

3. Try prevention strategies:

When you sense that you are about to be bullied, you can adopt certain prevention strategies to avoid being bullied. The best possible thing to do is to move away from the bully. Don't allow the bully to feel that you are scared and running away. If the bully is not aggressive or violent, you can tell that you are feeling bullied and not liking it. Do not get into places where bullies often pick on people. Do not give in to your aggressive behavior and start a fight. Bullies are known to win fights and love it.

2. Use your sense of humor:

Taking bullying with a sense of humor can belittle the behavior, upsetting the bully; hence, you can use this as an effective weapon against the bully. Humor cannot be adopted; it should come from within you and match your personality. When you take bullying with a pinch of laughter, the sense of failure is seen in the bully, as it conveys a message that you are not troubled by what happened. You have to do your homework and find out the humorous tinge in the bullying. Also it will take a lot of patience and courage on your part.

6 ways to respond if someone is bullying you

1. Ask for help:

Depending on where the bullying is taking place, seek the person who can help you out with this situation. Parents or teachers can interfere in school bullying, whereas a senior colleague or superior person can help in workplace bullying. Make sure your approach is not going to backfire. Be sure the person you are approaching is efficient in handling the situation. Seek counseling help if the bullying is emotionally troubling you, so that you can find your inner strength to fight back.

All of us know Kolkata as the city of Joy, but how many of us know the fact that Kolkata was also regarded as the City of Palaces? Calcutta (we shall call the city by its former name in this list) has been the seat of art and culture for more than 300 years. The fact that it's not really an ancient town has acted like a boon, for here we see diverge, Indo-European architectural wonders and culture. Besides there are a few places which exemplify the earthiness of the city. Let's have a look.

6. The lanes and by-lanes of north Calcutta:

North Calcutta, popularly referred to as the purono Kolkata (old Kolkata), is a place steeped in history. When you enter any quintessential North Calcutta gully, you'll find yourself transferred to an epoch bygone! The huge palatial buildings on the bank of Hoogly, the lanes, the typical old-school sweet shops, the hand-pulled rickshaws, the trams — you'll find everything that goes against the popular concern of the 21st century. Many people residing in the area feel that nothing has changed since time immemorial — well, you can rightly sense what a thrill it'll be to walk around this place. So, the next time you're here, take a guide and walk around this area — you'll be mesmerized.

5. The old ghats of Calcutta:

If you have a fair geographical knowledge, you'll know Calcutta rests on the banks of the River Hoogly, another name of River Ganges. Hence, for the theists, it was mandatory to get a Ganga-snaan daily. As a result of this, innumerable ghats were built along the Hoogly-Ganges. These ghats still breed the old-world charm and provide brilliant picturesque sceneries to photographers. You'll still find old people going to the river-banks at 4 am for the morning snaan, and wrestlers practicing their traditional martial arts — it's a view worth experiencing. If you're a sucker for the old world charm, board the local train from Dumdum to Majherhat which will take you through all the ghats — from the famous Bagbazar-Ahiritola-Nimtala ghats to the modern Princep-Pani-Outram ghats.

4. The old New Market:

Well, the sub-heading might seem quite a bit of an imposed oxymoron to you, but for the Calcuttans, the good ol' New Market is the single solution to all problems. From needle and cotton-reel to meat and flowers to brand and street fashion, name it and you'll get it in New Market – the market which is almost 150 years old!

3. The Tiretta Bazaar:

If you're looking for a quintessential Calcutta bazaar, this is not the one. You may call it a quintessential Chinese bazaar, though. As known to many, the Chinese had settled in Kolkata during the 18th century, and since then Calcutta witnessed numerous Chinese occasions, traditions and ceremonies. The Tiretta Bazaar is the Chinese breakfast market located at the Old China town of Calcutta — Bowbazar. It's a throbbing and bustling bazaar, like any other, where you can find authentic Chinese food — from noodles to dim sums. If you're in old Kolkata, you can never afford to miss this gastronomic bazaar. But one word of caution, this bazaar qualifies as an early morning one — if you really want to savor the delicacies, be there by 7 am, for by 9 am the stalls would be selling their last bits and pieces.

2. The flower market at Mullick Ghat:

This flower market at Mullick Ghat is not a thing that you've seen in the past. Situated beneath the colossal Howrah Bridge, the vividness of this (eastern India's largest flower market) is just indescribable. It is said that the business at the place never stops — from 3 am to very late at night, this place is always throbbing with flower merchants from all over Bengal. If you really want to explore the city, you can't get away without getting an essence of this market situated at the famous Mullick Ghat.

1. College Street:

Doesn't matter if you hate books, if you're a sucker for old Indo-European style buildings and crave to witness a "busy Calcutta road", this is the place to be. Besides, this place houses some of the best and oldest colleges of India — Presidency College, Sanskrit College, University of Calcutta, Calcutta Medical College, to name a few. When the tinkering tram whistles past the busy road, with hand-pulled rickshaws, buses, cabs, thelas, private cars and multitudes of people from all directions, it's a scene to behold. If you've got some more time, don't forget to sip your favorite sherbet from Paramount — a place once frequented by luminaries like Netaji, Satyajit Ray and others.

Most Popular Archaic Cemeteries in Kolkata

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 01:11 AM PST

The history of Calcutta (or Kolkata) dates back to the 18th century when Job Charnock founded the city on the banks of the river Hoogly. Since then, Calcutta has been emblematic of the British Raj in India. Likewise, albeit out of necessity, numerous cemeteries or graveyards had to be made, too. Today, on most of them stand schools and hospitals; however, a few of those cemeteries, after having been declared as heritage sites, still remain undisturbed in and around the city. These few are not all that remains of the grand history if the city but are definitely a must visit to understand Kolkata in a better way.

4. South Park Street Cemetery:

Opened in 1767 and used until about 1830, this is a heritage cemetery located in one of the prime areas of the city, Park Street (now named, Mother Teresa Sarani). The cemetery is considered as one of the earliest non-Church cemetery in the world, and until the 19th century it was regarded as the largest Christian cemetery outside Europe and America. Although closed as early as the early 19th century, this place attracts tourists and photographers from all around the world for its eclectic architectural pillars and magnificence. Apparently, this place is one of the spookiest cemeteries in Kolkata, as confirmed by the locals and the guards as well. So, the next time you're in Kolkata, make it mandatory to stop by this wonder!

3. Scottish Cemetery:

The St. Andrews Scott's Cemetery or the Scottish Cemetery is another historic site situated in the heart of the city. Located in Dalhousie Square and spread across an area of six acres, this cemetery has over 1600 burial plots with around 2000 graves. The archaic archway gate and the quintessentially British tombs made generally of Scottish sandstone or granite will definitely capture the senses of any art-lover. But the places calls for restoration and attention, since this cemetery doesn't comes under the heritage sites of Kolkata. However, in 2008, the Kolkata Scottish Heritage Trust took the initiative of restoring the cemetery; they plan to restore the historical links between Scotland and Calcutta. The cemetery was built in 1820 and was utilized till 1940, a decade after which it was totally abandoned.

2. The St. John's Churchyard:

Originally a cathedral, St. John's Church was one of the first public buildings to be opened by the East India Company in India. The construction of the Church started around 1784, with the aid of public lottery, and was completed around 1787. Located in Dalhousie Square, near the western corner of Raj Bhawan, the church yard houses a tiny but historically significant burial ground. The famous and controversial Black Hole Monument is situated here. During Siraj ud Daullah's siege of Calcutta, the nawab took around 146 prisoners and locked them inside the tiny 14ft. by 8 ft. room overnight. Out of the 146 prisoners, only 23 are believed to have survived. The graveyard also houses the tomb of Lady Canning, the wife of Lord Canning. Job Charnock's mausoleum is also located here. When in this church, don't forget to witness the temple-life grave of Francis Johnson. This epitaph written on the tombstone of this grand old lady of Calcutta (as Johnson was affectionately called) describes the entire life of her, with details of her four husbands and children!

Most Popular Archaic Cemeteries in Kolkata

1. Bhawanipur Cemetery:

The Military Burial Ground, commonly referred to as the Bhawanipur cemetery was opened in the year 1782-83, beyond the-then General Hospital. This cemetery represents the architectural amalgamation of the Indo-European style. The marble tombstones erected amidst lush green field carve out a picturesque scene. Although it's almost as old as the South Park St. cemetery, it doesn't have that old-world charm or archaic feeling attached to it, like the others. Visit this place on the All Soul's Day, we bet you'll love the ambience —filled with people, yet non-cacophonous and sublime.
