What Happens When Body Unites With Blank Canvas? This

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 04:52 AM PST

Here is a Heather Hansen, a New Orleans-based artist who literally immerses herself in her work. In her project, "Emptied Gestures," Hansen creates art the likes of which you've never seen before. The process appears simple, yet has an unfathomable depth. Heather is a dancer, painter and sculptor. Exhibitions of her work have been held around the world.

It begins with a huge blank paper and a yogi-like posture.

Heather Hansen (1)

A piece of charcoal in hand and flight of fancy.

Heather Hansen (2)

Body stretches over the white canvas.

Heather Hansen (3)

Charcoal floats with her over the canvas.

Heather Hansen (5)

An artistic movement sometimes overshadows the art itself.

Heather Hansen (6)

Hansen's goal is to "match her heartbeat with the beat of the universe."

Heather Hansen (7)

Her emotions, as she draws, are visible in the form of the work she produces.

Heather Hansen (12)

Hansen uses her body as a paintbrush and charcoal as the paint to create masterpieces.

Heather Hansen (13)

Each of her work compels one to explore the gray areas of the mind.

WASP: Sky Sports’ Gift To cricket

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 04:37 AM PST

For several decades we have seen projected scores displayed by the sports channel while watching cricket but Sky Sports has offered a completely new system of projecting scores and the winner in the form of WASP. During the first ODI between India and New Zealand viewers were highly fascinated by WASP and then a highly engaging discussion caught up on twitter which made the hashtag #WASP become a trending topic for an entire day. While half of the twitter population was wondering what the term means, the other half was busy giving the answers.

WASP

1. What WASP really means?

Winning And Score Prediction abbreviated as WASP is an algorithm of projecting the total score during the first inning and the probability of the batting team being victorious during the second inning.WASP involves more of calculation and less of prediction of which team is going to win the match. It involves several factors such the past performances of the teams. The system also takes several other factors such as pitch condition, size etc. into consideration. It is an analytical way of projecting what would happen in a match. And of course, it is not essential that it will always be right but it takes all ideal conditions into account.

What WASP really means? - WASP: Sky Sport's Gift To cricket

2. How does it work?

This model uses dynamic programming to estimate how the match is going to unfold. The algorithm used in first innings primarily uses the number of wickets and balls remaining while in the second inning the target score, runs scored at a point and the batsmen remaining are the key factors. This is how Dr. Seamus Hogan (one of the creators of WASP) described how the algorithm worked:

"Let V(b,w) be the expected additional runs for the rest of the innings whenb (legitimate) balls have been bowled and w wickets have been lost, and let r(b,w) and p(b,w) be, respectively, the estimated expected runs and the probability of a wicket on the next ball in that situation. We can then write

V(b,w) =r(b,w) +p(b,w) V(b+1,w+1) +(1-p(b,w)))V(b+1,w)Since V(b*,w)=0

Where b* equals the maximum number of legitimate deliveries allowed in the innings (300 in a 50 over game), we can solve the model backwards. This means that the estimates for V(b,w) in rare situations depends only slightly on the estimated runs and probability of a wicket on that ball, and mostly on the values of V(b+1,w) and V(b+1,w+1), which will be mostly determined by thick data points. The second innings model is a bit more complicated, but uses essentially the same logic."

How does it work? - WASP: Sky Sport's Gift To cricket

3. What it means to us?

Although it isn't a safe bet to rely upon WASP for being 100% accurate but we should not forget that statistics form a major part of cricket. A good team is more likely to defy all odds and win a game while an average team might let go of its winning position by committing an unintentional mistake. A game changing situation can indeed be predicted based on past performances and there is always a good chance that a cricket game turns out exactly to be what we have projected.

What it means to us? - WASP: Sky Sport's Gift To cricket

4. How well has it done in the past?

Sky Sport had first introduced WASP in late 2012 during a domestic tournament. The idea was to offer something new to the game of cricket. Here's an example of how the projections of WASP turned out in a match between New Zealand and England:

During the first inning WASP consistently projected a score between 250 and 260 for the England team and they made 258 runs. During the second inning the projection shifted from a 60% situation to a 50% chances of New Zealand winning the match. The match turned out to be a close shave for both the teams where any of the team could have won.

This example simply proves one point that we cannot trash the algorithm as it is fairly accurate in making projections. A statistician will always debate over its complexity but WASP has indeed justified what it is claiming to do.

5. WASP and betting

Another thing to note about WASP will be its influence in the betting field. With time it will definitely affect the decisions that people make while betting. Moreover it might also imbalance the trade of the bookies if more and more people start going according to the predictions made by WASP.  Only time will answer how well the projections turn out. The developers of WASP have worked on the system only to ensure accurate projections and if they are successful with their efforts betting will surely be affected.

Career In Film Direction In India: Facts, Hurdles And Scope

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 10:50 PM PST

Perhaps no one on earth can fake nonchalance to the gleam of the red carpet, limelight, much- fantasized page-3 culture, stardom and everything that the all-alluring film industry promises to hand out. Plausibly, our youth has developed quite a serious bent for films and weaving dreams on the big screen. Virtually, inside such a huge assortment of career options on hand in the film industry, filmmaking is perhaps the broadest. While this job comes with repute and regard as priceless gifts, it's true that no shortcut can dodge preconditions such as challenges, hard work, patience and creativity that come along.

Some major facets of filmmaking are listed below for those who aspire to become a proud, sophisticated film director in Bollywood.

5. A Filmmaking Course Not Necessary For Entry into Film Direction

Compassion and an eye for creativity are the biggest assets one needs to have for a profession of filmmaking, and you don't necessarily have to qualify in a filmmaking course to get into the industry. Here, making your own film and learning from mistakes is always an option, but the best way to start off would be to make short films. But since filmmaking is more of a teamwork job, there is no way one can start and move ahead without various skilled individuals working in coherent association!

A Filmmaking Course Not Necessary For Entry into Film Direction - Career In Film Direction In India

4. The Many Ways You Can Start

You can start your filmmaking career by taking any one of a number of work profiles or roles. For instance, one can start working as an assistant director who is responsible for making timely arrangements that are vital for the shoot. The number of assistant directors working on a project may vary depending upon the budget and how big a film is. Most filmmakers conduct rigorous fast and aggressive shoots and this is the reason there is always a great demand of committed and passionate assistant directors in the industry.

The Many Ways You Can Start - Career In Film Direction In India

3. Formal Training In Technical Aspects Of Movie Making Does Help

Even though there's no preset qualification or eligibility for one who wants to enter the film world and one has the option of making and sending their films to film festivals, formal training is always important. Training in filmmaking makes it easier to comprehend all the technicalities that apply to the job. Once experienced, one can easily learn to convert what they've learnt into action.

A full filmmaking course passes on theoretical as well as practical knowledge, making you suitably familiar with all the software and hardware required during shoots. This may include handling camera, editing, recording systems and production and post-production stages of filmmaking. One needs to be a graduate to take a two-year filmmaking course in one of the reputed institutes in India.

2. Excellent Communication and People Skills are a Must

Outstanding communicative abilities and people skills are the key attributes of a good director. Prior to anything else, he should have the ability to handle a huge number of people, to be able to tell an impressive story in visuals, for instance. Why great behavioral skills are required is because a director is fully responsible for taking care of the script, story, background, foreground, music and editing simultaneously.

While it is true that a lot can be learned by simply watching movies and making keen observations, still it is one's physical appearance on a real shooting set that makes all the difference. This is where one gets a chance to observe from close how different bodies work in harmony to make a movie project successful.

Excellent Communication and People Skills are a Must - Career In Film Direction In India

1. Funds Maybe a Potential Hurdle in Independent Filmmaking

No film project, small or big, can be complete without a sufficient budget and this is why it remains essential to figure out a precise budget pointing to the whole financial requirement. Making arrangements of required finances and collecting funds can be a big obstacle for a filmmaker, a new and independent one in particular.

It is, again, a director's duty to astutely use all available resources arranged by a producer for a film project. And as a director, you can contact a producer only when your script is ready and you've a detailed time bound sketch ready to go about it. Though you can start you own Production Company too, a certain amount of money will be required as seed capital for the infrastructure, registration and other expenses!
