Top 10 Ways To Stop Teenage Alcoholism Posted: 27 Sep 2013 02:31 AM PDT You might think that your teenage children won’t drink but the truth is that most teenagers do end up drinking at least once. Lack of judgment, peer pressure and lack of communication with a responsive adult will lead to children trying alcohol in one form or another. Every teen, no matter how shy or sincere, does want to try alcohol because they think it’s an adult thing to do. Many teenagers that start drinking at a young age find it hard to keep it under control when they become adults. There is however steps that a parent can take to stop teenagers from becoming alcoholics. Here are the top 10 ways to stop teenage alcoholism. 10. Talk:Talking to teenagers is the best way to keep them in check. You don’t have to talk specifically about alcoholism all the time but just talk to them and build a trust so that they can come to you when they need any guidance. Building an atmosphere of honesty in which the teenager feels he can safely be honest will help them during their times of crisis when they need adult guidance. 9. Listen:The other part of communication is listening. You can’t just lecture teenagers for hours and not give them enough time to express themselves. Truly listening to what your children have to say will encourage them to be open and honest. If you only pretend to listen, teenagers will not open up to you. Talking and listening together form good communication which is the best way of avoiding all the teenage problems including alcoholism. 8. Set Rules:When your teens start spending more time out of the house than inside, you need to set some strict rules and policy regarding alcohol and drugs. Be clear about these rules and let your teens know that these rules can’t be broken. The earlier you set these rules the easier it will be for the teenager to follow them. Try not to make any exceptions to the rules. 7. Spend Time with Teenagers:Teenagers can get irritated when their parents want to spend time with them but if you’ve had a good, open and communicative relation with your child they will not mind your spending time with them and instead cherish this time. You can do some activity together or just hang out and watch movies. It is also a good time to teach your kids about various issues like alcoholism without sounding too preachy. 6. Be a Good Role Model:Probably the most important thing you can do to stop teenage alcoholism is to be a good role model. If you are an alcoholic yourself then you can’t expect to stop your children from drinking. Always drink in moderation and never drink so much that you lose control over your actions and words. Don’t drink daily and don’t have too many parties at your house. Avoid inviting people who drink too much as they can set a bad example for the teens. 5. Never Drink and Drive:Whatever you do, never ever drink and drive. Even if you have had just one drink you shouldn’t drive. This sets a bad example for the kids. While teens trying alcohol once or twice isn’t such a big problem, drinking and driving can be fatal even the first time. They need to know that it is not okay to drive even if you’ve had just one drink. Use the designated driver system when going to a party. Make sure your kids know that even if they get drunk at a party they are not to drive under the influence in any condition. 4. Enroll Teens in Extracurricular Activities:Teenagers that participate in many extracurricular activities usually stay away from alcohol and drugs. As they say an empty mind is the devil’s workshop so make sure your teenager always has something to do. But don’t force activities on your children and let them choose what they have an interest in. 3. Be Strict:To avoid alcoholism you need to be strict about the rules you’ve set about alcohol. Your children may drink once or twice and that’s okay as long as they tell you about it and you punish them accordingly. Don’t be too strict or too lenient as these both are the wrong approach to raising your children to become healthy and responsible adults. 2. Don’t Store Alcohol at Home:If this step seems too harsh on yourself then you might be an alcoholic. A normal person should be able to do without having a store of alcohol at home. You can buy whenever you are having a party but if you need to drink daily then you’ll find it hard to control your children in terms of alcoholism. The fact is that the first drink that children have is from their parent’s cupboard. Not keeping alcohol at home also shows the teens that alcohol doesn’t have to be such a big part of life. 1. Talk about Alcoholism at an Early Age:There are many talks you need to have with your children as they grow up. Talk about alcoholism at an early age, probably at 12 or 13. Let the kids know about the facts about alcohol and how addictive it can be. Give them examples of people who have ruined their life due to alcohol. If you have a rehabilitated alcoholic in the family let them share their experience with the kids. The post Top 10 Ways To Stop Teenage Alcoholism appeared first on TopYaps. |
Top 10 Benefits Of Playing Video Games Posted: 27 Sep 2013 02:31 AM PDT Video games have evolved a lot over the years as the age group involved with video games has changed. Video games are no longer limited to kids but adults play them as well. Senior citizens have adopted video games as well and are seeing beneficial results to their health. The negative rep that video games had generated for allegedly promoting violence is not being countered with tons of positive benefits of playing video games. Here are the top 10 benefits of playing video games. 10. Motor Skills:Video games improve motor skills in both children and adults. With the invention of movement recognition video games the improvement in motor skills has increased even more. Young children who play video games learn motor skills at a faster rate and it even helps maintain motor skills in old age. 9. Reduction in Stress and Depression:It has always been known that video games are a great way to reduce stress and fight depression. Video games are so immersive that winning in a video game gives us a sense of achievement as high as winning in real life. This helps in reducing stress and also fights depression and loneliness. Playing video games at the end of the day is a better stress reliever than watching TV. 8. Vision and Hand Eye Coordination:Another benefit of playing video games is the improvement in hand eye coordination. Contrary to previous beliefs playing video games within limits don’t damage the eyes but instead help improve vision, especially in young children. Playing continuously for many hours obviously strains the eyes but that will happen even if you watch TV or surf the internet for long hours. 7. Decision Making Skills:Video games require quick decision making and helps children to improve their cognitive ability and the ability to make quick decisions. Video games don’t have to be boring to be educational. Any video game can help in improving the decision making skills of a child. 6. Pain Relief:It has been seen that playing video games can relive physical pain temporarily. Basically video games distract people, especially small children from the physical pain and act as a numbing agent. Children forget about their pain even without the need of pain relieving medicines. 5. Ability to Focus:Video games are also being used to fight attention deficit disorder that has become common in young children. Video games require a lot of focus which is apparent from the fact that when you start playing a game, time flies by much faster. That’s because you are completely engrossed in the game. This helps in improving the ability to focus in children. 4. Team Spirit:It has been seen that playing multiplayer games online helps in improving team spirit in children. Of course it can be said that playing real games and sports help a lot more in developing team spirit but it can’t hide the fact that video games can do the same. Games such as Counter Strike and DOTA require very good team work and communication between team members. It also teaches children to fulfill their particular role instead of always trying to be the hero. 3. Self Confidence:Playing and winning video games give a boost to any child’s self confidence. This is especially important if the child is lacking in self confidence due to failure in real world situations. A boost from playing video games can then translate into the real world and help the child grow into a balanced individual. 2. Problem Solving Skills:There is no arguing that video games improve the problem solving skills of children. Every move and every stage in a game has a new problem that needs to be solved. Children learn to find solutions by trying again and again. The ease of restarting the game from the point of failure lets them know that failing isn’t bad and that they can try a different solution the next time. 1. Communication Skills:Many people worry that playing video games will make their children anti social or socially awkward. But the truth is that video games can actually help in improving communication and social skills. Team games require concise and clear communication. Many other games now have a social element to them and children meet new people online and learn to make new friends. The post Top 10 Benefits Of Playing Video Games appeared first on TopYaps. |
Posted: 27 Sep 2013 01:33 AM PDT Warfare has come a long way since men fought facing each other in single file and shooting their one shot muskets. Today you can target a small hut in Afghanistan with a drone while sitting in USA. One major leap in warfare came with the use of missiles to attack targets far away. Missile technology has evolved rapidly and today the world has some very deadly missiles that could bring about an Armageddon in a matter of hours. Let’s look at the top 10 deadliest missiles. 10. PGM-17 Thor:The PGM-17 Thor was the first ballistic missile that became operational in the late 1950′s. The U.S. Air Force used it as an intermediate range ballistic missile deployed in the United Kingdom. It was an impressive missile with a height of 20 meters and a diameter of 2.4 meters. It helped in the development of the delta rockets that were used as space launch vehicles. 9. V-2 Rocket:The V-2 rocket was the precursor to all of today’s missile and rocket technology. It was the first man made object to enter outer space. It was developed in the Nazi regime during the end of World War II and was used mainly to bomb London and Antwerp. More than 3000 V-2s were launched which killed about 9000 civilians and soldiers while 12000 forced laborers died in concentration camps while making these missiles. 8. Tomahawk:Tomahawk is a medium to long range missile used by the U.S. Navy. It is a subsonic missile that can be launched from both ships and submarines. It was introduced in 1970′s and still continues to be in operation in many forms. It is powered by a jet engine and has the capability to target a variety of surface targets. 7. BrahMos:BrahMos is a joint venture between India and Russia and the name is derived from two rivers, Brahmaputra and Moskva, in India and Russia respectively. It is a supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft and land. It can travel at the speed of Mach 3 and is the world’s fastest cruise missile. It can carry a payload of up to 200 kg and has a range of about 290 km. It can fly as low as 10 meters off the ground. 6. Jericho lll:The Israeli weapon systems are highly secretive and all that is known about them is through speculation and whatever little data is available to the public. Jericho is a codename given to its ballistic missile program. The Jericho lll is the latest of its long range missile and is an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. It can carry a payload of about 1000 kg and can carry conventional nuclear or unconventional payloads. Its range has been speculated to be anywhere from 2000 km to 11,500 km. 5. UGM-133 Trident ll:The Trident ll missile is a submarine-launched ballistic missile. It was built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems and is used by U.S. and Royal Navy of the U.K. It can carry multiple nuclear warheads and can be launched by a submarine while still submerged under water. It is accurate enough to be a first strike strategic weapon. 4. M51:The M51 is a French SLBM or submarine-launched ballistic missile. It was designed by EADS Astrium Space Transportation and is used by the French Navy. It has the capacity to carry from 8 to 10 thermonuclear warheads and can be launched by a fully submerged submarine. It has a good range and can act as a first strike nuclear deterrent strategic weapon. 3. DF-41:Like Israel, China’s defense systems are also secretive but there is a bit known about the Dongfeng-41 or DF-41. It is nuclear solid fueled road mobile Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. It is probably the world’s longest ranged missile with range of up to 14,000 km and the capability to hit anywhere in the world. It can carry multiple payloads and has a top speed of Mach 25. 2. R-36:The R-36 is a series of Russian ICBMs and space launch vehicles. It was designed during the Cold War and gave Russia the first strike advantage over the U.S. The R-36 can carry a lot of weight and can carry more than 10 different warheads and 40 penetration aids. The quality by which one single missile can target multiple locations, is enough to catapult it in the list of deadliest missiles around. 1. LGM-30 Minuteman:The LGM-30 Minuteman is an American ICBM with a range of 13,000 km. It can carry up to 3 different nuclear warheads that can target separate locations. It is a guided missile and forms the part of the U.S. nuclear triad along with the Trident missile systems and the stealth bombers. 5 Benefits You’ll Get From A Bookless Library Posted: 27 Sep 2013 12:56 AM PDT When we think of a library the image that comes to mind is that of thousands and thousands of books lined up in shelves in a huge hall. But this image is beginning to change with bookless libraries starting to emerge. A bookless library is a library that only has digital books and doesn’t have any real books. The concept is being tried in a few libraries around the world in different formats. BiblioTech in Bexar County, Texas is the world’s first truly bookless library that opened recently. Whether this concept will be better or worse than the normal library concept is still to be seen but there are a few clear benefits of a bookless library. Eventually we might see a middle path emerging where we’ll have libraries that are mostly digital but also house certain number of real books and still give the feel of a traditional library environment. 5. Requires Limited Space:Libraries are traditionally large projects that require a lot of space and money to be built but a bookless library can be built in a much smaller space. Since all the books are digital, very little room is wasted in storing books and all the space can be utilized to house patrons. Bookless libraries will house computers and screens that the readers can use to read digital books and all the space can be used for this purpose. They’ll also lend out eReaders to increase the number of people they can reach. Of course the highest number of readership will be from people who’ll be using their own devices. 4. No Book Maintenance or Care:Traditional books need a lot of maintenance and care. They need to be protected from the environment while being stored in the shelves of the library and from time to time will need repair and rebinding as they get old. A digital library doesn’t have any such problem. There will be no cases of misplaced or lost books because the books don’t need to be sorted manually according to their category. All this saves time and money that the library can spend on providing more books and better facilities. 3. Can Provide Digital Education to the Masses:A digital library can be much more than just a place to find and read books. Because computers are part of its basic infrastructure a bookless library can be used as an institute to provide digital education to young students and other members of the community who might not have had an opportunity to learn how to use computers. A digital library is great for educational purposes because all the computers can be connected to the internet which is almost an infinite source of knowledge and information. 2. Easy to Search, Loan and Return:Many people procrastinate about going to library. It is a lot of work because you have to make at least two trips to read a book; one to loan the book and one to return it. If you can’t read the book in 14 days you have to either make multiple trips or pay a fine. But a bookless library solves all these problems. To loan a book you don’t even have to visit the library physically and can just do it through the library’s website. Once your period of 14 days is over the book will automatically get returned to the library and you won’t be able to access it on your device unless you loan it again. This makes a bookless library very easy to use and will encourage more and more people to read more. 1. Can Reach More People:A bookless library can be a good way to reach the ever growing population. With suburbs expanding exponentially around cities, it is hard for everyone to visit the city library in person. But a bookless library can have many small centers located in every neighborhood. A lot of people can be reached by such a network of bookless libraries. Uneducated people who would never even think of stepping inside a library can also be reached and education can be provided to each and everyone irrespective of their location or economic background. 5 Useful Tips To Increase Battery Life Of Your Cell Phone Posted: 27 Sep 2013 12:34 AM PDT Smart phones have been improving in technical specification at a phenomenal speed. Today we can do almost everything with our phone that we used to do with a computer. We can call, text, video chat, play games, surf internet, watch movies, listen to music, shop, take pictures and shoot videos and even use our phones for navigation. Truly, the smart phone has become the king of multitasking. But all this multitasking comes at a cost. With ever increasing processors and larger memories, the battery life of phones have taken a serious hit. Android phones are especially notorious for their short battery life. Our tendency to rely more and more on our phones means that it is hard to get by one full day on one charge. Portable batteries and phone cases with additional battery have come out as options to increase battery life on the go. If you don’t want to invest in such a device or don’t want to carry too much bulk there are a few tips you can keep in mind to increase your battery life. Here are the top 5 tips to increase battery life of your cell phone. 5. Change the Display Settings:This is the most popular way of prolonging battery life by decreasing the screen brightness. You should always keep this setting at the minimum value as most phones automatically increase brightness when you need it. You should also set the screen timeout setting to minimum. This is the time it takes for the screen to turn off once you’ve stopped using it and it should be kept to a minimum. Using screensavers that keep running all the time is no longer a good idea. 4. Turn off Radios:There are many radios in your cell phone. Apart from the traditional radio, which you don’t always use, there are radios that search for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. If your Bluetooth is turned on it will keep searching for signals through out the day. The same goes for wifi and GPS. To save battery you should turn off Bluetooth whenever you are not actively using it. You might use wifi at home or work to use that internet network but when you are mobile there is no point in keeping wifi on. Also make sure that apps that use GPS do so only after taking permission. You should only use GPS for navigation and if an app or a game asks for permission to use your GPS you should deny it as they just use it to target location specific marketing according to your location. 3. Kill Background Apps:Multitasking is fun but it also is the biggest culprit that eats up your battery life. When you are done using an app you should turn it off. But there are many apps that don’t turn off completely and their processes keep running in the background. These processes add up and drain your battery unnecessarily. You can kill these apps in the task manager of most phones. There are also good apps available that give you more control over the background apps that are running on your phone. 2. Do not Use Vibration Mode:A lot of people keep their phones on vibration mode especially while working. Some people have both ringtone and vibration modes active at the same time. While playing a ringtone doesn’t use much battery, running a motor with a small weight that has to vibrate your whole phone, uses a lot of battery. When you are working and don’t want to disturb others and yourself, keep your phone on silent but turnoff vibration mode and just keep the phone in sight so that you know when someone calls. There is really no need to ever use the vibration mode. 1. Disable Notifications and Automatic Updates:Disabling notifications is a great way of saving the battery. You need notification for calls and texts but other than that you don’t need any notification. Many apps and games keep sending advertisements in the form of notifications. This not only is an unwanted distraction but also reduces your battery life considerably. Also make sure to turn off automatic updates for all apps. Otherwise the apps that are active will keep searching for updates on a regular basis. You should also get email manually instead of keeping the automatic refresh option on.
