8 Widely Popular Female Philosophers Posted: 13 Nov 2013 03:30 AM PST We often assume that a highly ascetic, analytical and rational field like philosophy is meant for men, because women are considered to be more emotional beings. Our attitudes could be one of the reasons why the image old men, with flowing beards, flash on our vision when we think of philosophers. How surprising it is to realize that long before the Father of Philosophy- Plato, could make his mark on the field, a woman, En Hedu’Anna, was doing philosophy in 2285–2250 BCE in the area now designated as Syria/Iraq. Many women have overcome the obstacles like alienation, loneliness, implicit bias, stereotype threat, micro aggression, and outright discrimination to set milestones in the field of philosophy. Unfortunately, Edith Stein was gassed to death at Auschwitz concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland for her Jewish birth. 3. Harriet Taylor Mill:Harriet Taylor Mill was a British philosopher who is known to be one of the earliest advocates of women's rights. 7 Betrayals By The Biggest Traitors In History Posted: 12 Nov 2013 11:24 PM PST Great events in history bring out both heroes and villains among us. They are a good test of character and separate the brave from the cowards. There have been many traitors in history who have betrayed those closest to them or who have betrayed their own nations. In Dante’s Inferno the deepest circle of hell is reserved for traitors where Satan chews on three biggest traitors including Judas. Let’s look at 7 such traitors who betrayed those who trusted them. 7. Harold Cole:Harold Cole was a British traitor during WWII. He was the deputy commander of the Scotland Yard and helped create the French resistance escape lines. But he gave this information to the Gestapo and also provided information about the French resistance leaders. He is considered responsible for the death of about 150 people. He is considered the worst traitor during the Second World War. He was caught by the French police in 1946 and shot dead after capture. 6. Alfred Redl:Alfred Redl was an army officer in the Austrian army. He worked as a spy for Russia for many years before and during World War I. He sold many secrets about the Austrian Army including their invasion plan for Serbia. Russia sold the plan to Serbia. Not only did he provide information to Russia but he double crossed his own country many times by providing wrong information about Russia’s military and exposed Austrian agents to the Russian intelligence. In terms of numbers he is one of the biggest traitors in history as his actions caused the death of about half a million Austrians. When the Austrian police was about to capture him he committed suicide. 5. Robert Ford:Robert “Bob” Ford was an outlaw who betrayed his own gang leader, the notorious Jesse James and shot him from behind to receive the bounty on his head. They say there is no honor among thieves and it surely is true because Bob had always admired Jesse James and considered him a sort of personal hero but still betrayed him for money. He and his brother were trusted by Jesse as the last few remaining members of his gang. The brothers didn’t get the $10,000 bounty and instead were almost hanged for the prison but were pardoned at the last minute. Despite a deal with Crittenden they only got $500. Ford was shot in 10 years later by Edward O’Kelley who at least had the decency to not shoot from behind. 4. Martin James Monti:Martin James Monti was a United States airman who later defected to the Axis powers and became a propaganda writer and broadcaster. He used to broadcast propaganda under the pseudonym Captain Martin Wiethaupt. When the war ended he was in Italy and surrendered to the Americans while wearing his SS uniform. He was first only charged with desertion and was sentenced to 15 years but released in 1 year and told to rejoin the army. In 1948 the FBI discovered that he was Martin Wiethaupt and charged him with treason. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He got out on parole in 1960. He died in 2000. 3. Brutus:Marcus Junius Brutus the Younger was part of one of the most heinous betrayals in history. He was the nephew of Julius Caesar and stuck with the Optimates during the Great Roman Civil War. Julius Caesar showed him mercy and reinstated him into the senate. Some say that he was Caesar’s son but this is not provable. But it is true that Brutus was very close to Caesar’s heart. When the senate attacked Caesar he was heartbroken on seeing Brutus there. Shakespeare made the line “Et tu Brutus?” Caesar’s last words which means “Even you Brutus?” This is definitely one of the biggest betrayals in history. 2. Benedict Arnold:Benedict Arnold was an American commander who fought very well from the American side during the revolution. But his rivals discredited his victories and humiliated him. His pride made him decide to betray the Americans. He planned to sell West Point to the British which would have changed the course of the war. But the plan was exposed and he fled to the British side. As if that wasn’t enough he led the British army in raids against the Americans. It is said that on his death bed in London he regretted what he had done. But the Americans still equate his name with the greatest treason that anyone can ever do. 1. Mir Jafar:Mir Jafar did in India what Benedict Arnold did in America. But while Benedict Arnold was motivated by anger and revenge, Mir Jafar just wanted to fulfill his ambitions and he felt that helping the British would further his cause more. He was a commander in the Bengal army under the Nawab of Bengal. In 1757 Robert Clive made an accord with him according to which he didn’t participate in the Battle of Plassey and the British were able to defeat the Nawab. They formed a puppet state and put him in charge as the new Nawab of Bengal. He later realized that the British wanted full control and tried to stop them by supporting the Danish but failed and he was deposed. Later he came into the good graces of the British again and was reinstated as the Nawab till his death in 1765. It is said that the British rule of Indian subcontinent began with the betrayal of Mir Jafar. He is considered a disgrace to faith, humanity and the nation. 6 Modest Ways To Breastfeed Your Infant In A Public Place Posted: 12 Nov 2013 08:20 PM PST There are many women who are intimidated by the thought of breastfeeding in public. They get nervous or self conscious because of the opinions (largely presumed perceptions) of others. This thought not only prevents new moms from feeding their little babies when out, it also kills their confidence to do what they desire. Breast feeding is the most natural thing in the world. Just like any adult has the right to eat out, your baby too should be allowed to feed outside. Every nursing mother must therefore feel absolutely comfortable nursing their baby in public places. When it is fine to expose breasts on the beach or pool, then the act of a new mom pulling her shirt up to nurse her baby shouldn’t be looked down with scorn! It's absolutely a mom's prerogative where she wants to feed her baby or whether she should cover up or not – no one else should tell her otherwise. For the mothers who want to nurse their infants as and when required, we have listed 6 modest ways mothers can breastfeed babies in a public place. 6. Avoid the toilet:Yes, there will be people out there who would not be willing to understand why you may have to breastfeed your child in public, but do not pay any heed to them. Please do not feel that you need to sit in the public toilet and nurse. You will not eat sitting on a toilet seat, so please do not force you babe to do so too. Keep it clean always. If at all you need more privacy, find solace in the backseat of your car. 5. Take a nursing cover or blanket:If you think your breastfeeding in the public will make you or people around uncomfortable, you can use a cover to hide the baby when he has begun nursing. If you are feeding a bigger baby, she will not like to be covered and will throw the cover off anyway. But you can use a nursing cover or a blanket as cover. If it is hot outside, you can use a very light piece of fabric. Make sure when you are covering the babe she is not getting uncomfortable in any way. If she is then avoid taking a cover. 4. Be particular about what you wear:Clothes you wear can make or mar your experience of having to breastfeed in public place. Choosing the right outfit that makes it easy for you and the babe is very important. You can either choose to wear two piece outfits or two layers of stretchy tops. You can pull the top layer up and can pull the top layer down to expose the breast for the bubs to latch onto without exposing anything else. You can also wear nursing tank tops with built-in bras. With tanks you just have to fasten the nursing top and feed the child without exposing the breast or tummy. 3. Find a comfortable spot and feed:First thing before you get down to breastfeeding in public is to find a place where you can sit comfortably and nurse. Try and go out with someone, having a partner along can – one, create a more private space for you, two, converse with you so you are not in a panic state. 2. Be comfortable and positive:As a mother you need to get one thing straight, you are doing nothing wrong by feeding your child in public. It is not about you breastfeeding in public, it's about your baby's privilege to nurse anywhere anytime when she is hungry. Just like an adult can dine in any restaurant when hungry, a baby has the right to ask mom to nurse whenever or wherever it wants. 1. It is the most natural thing, so be very natural:You can be scared if it's right or wrong, but don't show it off, simply because it is completely natural and there are no restrictions to where you can feed your child. Plus, being calm and comfortable will never let anyone know that you are breastfeeding. A crying child or your discomfort can draw attraction to you. Thus be at utmost ease and treat it completely natural thing irrespective of how people see you. The post 6 Modest Ways To Breastfeed Your Infant In A Public Place appeared first on TopYaps. |
