7 Countries That Don’t Give A Damn To The Freedom Of Expression Posted: 19 Nov 2013 10:47 PM PST Most countries in the world have endowed their citizens with freedom of expression and speech, and have officially mentioned it in their constitutions. Although there are provisions and laws that implement limitations on free expression in every country, our right to express can never be fully suppressed. Some countries in the world, however, have no or insignificant freedom of expression for their citizens! 7. Turkmenistan: The rule in Turkmenistan is too harsh to let freedom of expression prevail independently. The effect of this provision is nationwide and the media and journalism are the first to suffer. Most media outlets in the country are controlled by the government. Reporters and journalists all fear vilification charges and this is one of the reasons they never attempt to openly criticize the government and impose self-censorship on themselves. 6. Uzbekistan: Another censored country where free expression is nothing more than a serious crime liable to be punished by the government. It's no wonder even if a journalist gets sentenced for 5 years or more for just criticizing the rule or observing what wrong is happening in the country and putting it forth through a media platform. The governments try their best to harass and coerce the media and everybody associated with it, and this is what can be held responsible for self-censorship being a common thing there! 5. Myanmar: Another country that is pretty tough on journalists and its common citizens is Myanmar. Though there exist numerous publications that are privately owned in the county, they are plainly controlled by the government and have no or negligible practical power! Everybody (citizens, journalists and social activists) who dares to go up against the regime is always at the risk of assault, imprisonment or other legal punishments. This is the reason there is a small number of daily newspapers and journals in Myanmar and those that exist are strictly required to release either weekly or monthly issues. 4. Iran: For citizens of Iran, free expression to their feelings has always been alien. The scenario became worse with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad getting re-elected in the year 2009. As monopoly would do it, jails in the country were more jam-packed with journalists than any other place in the world by the end of the year. Nobody can be allowed to circulate any thoughts that in any way disapprove of public rights and are against Islamic standards, states the Iranian press law. 3. Belarus: Like most countries in the list, the criticism of the government or the President by media or a journalist, again, is a grave criminal offence subject to either heavy monetary penalties or imprisonment, or even both in some cases! A so-called law has been forcing every journalist within the country to get registered with the Ministry of Information ever since it was brought into effect in the year 2009, regardless of how furiously citizens, media or journalists themselves reacted to it! As expected and understood, the rule allocates the ruling people the authority to monitor (nullify!) All media associations that could expose them! 2. North Korea: Freedom of expression is all but non-existent for both common people and the media in North Korea. It is the government that stalwartly limits its citizens' direct access to any type of information and always has a check on media outlets. Interestingly, the media is exploited in order to promote the command of the government and the journalists of the country need to be a part of the state-run ruling system. The worst, it is considered to be a serious crime in North Korea to listen to any foreign broadcasts and the breach of the law is subject to stern penalties including imprisonment, physical labor and in some cases even death! 1. Syria: This is the nation where the whole world witnessed the governments trample freedom of expression, the most imperative of all the human rights given to citizens in any country, with all its might and confidence! It was hardly two year back or so and not long back in history that the Syrian government sought to impose absolute news blackout. After all, it sounds a little awkward to hear that a country can afford media crackdown even in this technology-driven 21st century, the age of most advanced media of communication including cell phones and social media already well under way! There are rivals that compete on field with each other and their respective performances are bettered and then there the rivals who carry this aggression off the field too. Whatever it is, rivalry in sports fills up stadiums and arenas with fans that come to see the epic battles between rivals. Battles that make fans go crazy and battle that leave fans buzzing about it for days together. Over the years, there have been numerous competitive rivalries amid players in almost all sports – rivalries, not just for the pinnacle, but also for glory, for recognition and for supremacy. Here we have listed 5 of the world's greatest rivals in sports history. Before you go bonkers, we'd like to inform that we have selected only one entry per sport. 5. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird rivalry began when the two legends ended up playing for the Basketball league's biggest rivaled franchises – the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. The rivalry wasn't about the two teams battling for championships throughout the 1960s, but it was also for the two greatest players trying to prove their metal. Agassi held the world's top rank in tennis for 101 weeks, which was surpassed by Sampras who held the top spot for then-record 286 weeks. Earl Anthony and Mark Roth: Earl Anthony and Mark Roth have been the two best bowlers of the 1970s, so rivalry was just evident amid the two. 6 Utterly Idiotic Indian TV Ads Posted: 19 Nov 2013 10:19 PM PST Advertisements sell lies and it is a fact even advertisers can’t deny. They show us people laughing and smiling and doing impossible things by using their products and tell us that we can do these things and be happy too if we only buy their product. Sadly many people fall prey to these advertisements and waste their money on things they don’t need. But some ads are especially idiotic and don’t make any sense. Here are 6 recent ads that came on Indian television and made no sense whatsoever. 6. Tata Nano It is Awesome: Tata Nano’s latest advert is totally meaningless. It’s a bunch of young boys and girls, running around and dancing. There’s a bit of magic and that guy who no one knows who’s a magician. The song doesn’t even have explanatory lyrics. It just goes, “na na na na you’re awesome”. No one tells you why you are awesome and why Nano is awesome. They just go ahead and celebrate “awesomeness” of Nano. This ad is completely stupid and makes no sense and shows nothing about the car. Most other car ads are also stupid and there is trend going on of putting a song in the audio and showing the car run around but Nano doesn’t even show much of their car in this ad. It’s the result of a total lack of creativity. 5. Axe Blast Deodorant: Axe were the first deodorant brand in India to tell us that if we used their products girls would come running from every corner. And they’ve stuck to that strategy even though countless people have made fun of the false promises shown by Axe. Their new adverts show Ranbir Kapoor counting glances that he receives from girls but when he sits in the car his driver has a much higher count on his counter. They never show it but apparently it’s because the driver uses Axe. Believe me when I say, no matter what deodorant you use, you’ll never get more looks from girls than Ranbir Kapoor. 4. Mountain Dew Dark Night Fear “Darr Ke Aage Jeet Hai”: Soft drink manufacturers aren’t far behind in the stupid ad department. Mountain Dew’s tagline, “Darr ke aage jeet hai” forces them to make some stupid ads. The latest is their glow in the night bottle ad where few guys repel down a fake mountain in a very bright “dark night”. Just before the narrator says that everyone is afraid, one cocky guy makes fun of another who’s feeling fear. Repelling in the night down a mountain is not brave but stupid. Drinking Mountain Dew won’t help you in it unless it makes you stupid. And the worst thing is that the bottle doesn’t even glow in real life. I went and bought the bottle thinking it will be cool to have in the room at night but it didn’t glow at all! Liars! 3. Park Avenue Beer Shampoo: This recent ad is totally idiotic and stupid. They have actually tried to be over the top in idiocy and stupidity. For some reason they think that’s a good marketing strategy. And the product is idiotic in itself. Beer Shampoo? What the hell were they smoking when they came up with that product? It’s a classic case of using advertisements to sell products without the products having any special qualities. It’s regular shampoo but they needed to sell it so they made it look like a pint of beer and made an ad that will humor dimwitted young males; their primary market. 2. “Pakka Indian” of McDonald: Unlike other ads on this list, McDonald’s has at least thought about their ad. They’ve tried to reach out to the Indian-ness of, well Indians, by bringing out our idiosyncrasies. It’s a good idea in principal as they want to make McDonlad’s feel like an Indian brand but in execution I found some of their ads to be offending. Especially the one in which the guy asks another guy about how much he got his burger for. Yes, we are a little stingy with out money but that ad makes us feel like total losers. Any sensible Indian will see that ad as an insult to all Indians but then sensible Indians won’t go to McDonald’s in the first place. 1. Lakme 9to5: Fashion brands and beauty care products have ads that are simple parading of beautiful models or paid-for actresses in highly edited shots. But sometimes they come out with a concept such as Lakme’s 9to5. A girl gets up and puts on Lakme’s 9to5 makeup and goes to work. At 5 all other girl’s receive an alarm to touch up their make up but she doesn’t need to. The idea is that their product will last longer. But what I don’t understand is, that if it’s supposed to last longer than 5pm then why is it called 9to5? Shouldn’t it be called 9to9 or something? It’s called 9to5 and that, to me, seems like something that will last from 9 to 5. But I guess the kind of girls that will use the product won’t be able to catch this irony anyways so all it good.
