10 Ways To Trick Mind & Kick Boredom Posted: 02 Nov 2013 01:33 AM PDT Life becomes monotonous and boring if you can't cheer up yourself. We all go through trying circumstances that overpower us, but if this continues for too long, unhappiness will start consuming us. Also, worrying about every little thing in life is pointless, it will only add to our dismal. When the surroundings are short on happiness, it's time we begin whipping up our own formula for being happy. It's no rocket science to feel good again and kick away boredom; it's only about digging ourselves for some happiness. Here are top 10 ways to trick yourself into not getting bored. 10. Share Your Troubles with Your Spouse:In times of despair there is nothing better than sharing your troubles and with your loving spouse. Love is generally known to overwhelm our emotions. A warm hug from your partner can kill all the dullness that surrounds us in a single stroke. 9. My Pet Makes Me Feel Good:Pets can provide us with endless giggles and cheer us up when nothing else can. Spending evenings with our pet is a great way to enhance mood. Pets let us forget our worries and provide us unconditional and unprejudiced love all the time. 8. Do You Believe In Workouts?Experts say that a single session of workout can be a great mood elevator. Gyming is the best way of sweating out all your worries. According to recent studies the glow of exercise shows for the next 12 hours, thus infusing noticeable happiness in your lives. Thus, adopting a regular work out regime can have a long lasting impact on your mood. 7. Regular Outings Create 'Life' In Life:It's a universal truth that people who plan regular outings have a better frame of mind than those who don't want to break their status quo. Weekends are for change and should be properly utilized. A long drive with your family can be a great way of introducing change in your boring life. 6. Volunteering For Social Causes:If you are rich on cash, but low on peace of mind, make sure you get associated with some charity works at the earliest. It's all about spending your dollars and time with people who need them both. This will help you in two ways – one, it will make you realize that boredom is a self-inflicted trouble and second is that helping others is the best way to seek satisfaction and kill boredom. The more you remain engrossed in such social activities, the less time you have for getting bored. 5. Humming Your Favorite Tunes:Humming your favorite tunes can rekindle your motivation and keep you feeling lively. Singing songs that you like most prompts the brain to pump more dopamine. Dopamine production is turn is associated with the human mind experiencing greater happiness. 4. Painting Your Canvass:Our busy lives hardly spare us any time for leisure activities and this is the reason why, tediousness often comes belligerently banging on our door. If you are good at using your painting brush (and even if you aren't) try painting the pictures of your imagination on canvass. You may even put all your worries in form of colors on paper tricking yourself into relief. 3. Delicious Meals Kill Boredom:What you eat reflects on your face and surely personality too. You must eat fresh food to be happier in your life. Even scientists believe that people who consume fresh vegetables and fruits (and say no to processed fast foods) lead better and happier lives. These foods are known to stimulate hormones such as serotonin in the body, which makes you feel lively, and stabilizes your mood. Serotonin is present in spinach and other green vegetables. Protein packed foods such as fish, meat and eggs produce pleasure inducing hormone named dopamine, which also makes you feel happier as often as you eat them. 2. Say Hello to Smiling Faces:Smiling faces often stimulate happy feelings. The kind of people with whom you socialize decides your mood for most part of the day. While happy peers can make your mood, depressed souls only mar your overall frame of mind. So, next time you are feeling low, find a friend who radiates happiness. If you don't find such friends, hang onto laughter videos on YouTube than absorbing negative vibes standing alongside depressed people. 1. Have You Ever Tried Gardening?Gardening is always considered to be the best exercise for a depressed mind that is enveloped with a thick cushion of boredom. Gardening is all about harvesting a new life; making seeds sprout into tall and stout plants. In a broader sense, it involves generating productivity. Creation of new life is always pleasure inducing and very satisfying. You drift away from all the vagaries of life while you are digging into soil and observe saplings growing into young plants. Thus, testing your green thumb can really help. The post 10 Ways To Trick Mind & Kick Boredom appeared first on TopYaps. |
10 Digital Wonders of the World Posted: 01 Nov 2013 11:05 PM PDT The world has changed a lot in the last 20 to 30 years and most of this has been the result of digital technology. It has grown at such a rapid rate that our life has changed completely from the way it used to be just a few decades ago. Some of these innovations and technologies are really wonders of the digital world but they have become such an integral part of our life that we tend to take them for granted and don’t realize how special these are. Here are 10 such digital wonders that have changed the way we live. 10. Open Source:The whole concept of open source is related to the initial development of the internet which wanted to bring real freedom to the masses. With open source software anyone can get the source code and make adjustments to the software and make it better for everybody else. We’ve seen a wonderful collaboration of great minds from around the world to give us things such as Linux, Wikipedia, Android etc. 9. Digital Photography:Digital photography has taken photography and made it accessible to each and every one. The reason why today all of our devices carry a camera is because of digital photography. Video chat, instagram, face recognition etc. would all be missing if not for the innovations of digital photography. 8. Graphical User Interface:When computers first came out, they were very user unfriendly. Only experts in computer languages could use them. It was only possible with the development of graphical user interface that today’s personal computers and other devices were made possible. Otherwise only professionals might have been using computers today after spending some time learning the language first. 7. Media File Compression:Media file compression in the form of mpeg, jpeg, mp3 etc. has been a very important step in the evolution of digital technology. Because of these compression technologies we can deal with large amounts of data fairly easily. If not for them, it would have been impossible to develop the type of software we have today. 6. GPS:One of the greatest digital wonders of the modern world, GPS is a very important technological innovation. It was originally used for military purposes but today all our devices have GPS and we can all track our position here on earth using satellites in space. It is a great tool that we all use in one way or another. We might not even realize but our GPS location tracking is used by many products and websites. 5. Fiber Optics:The innovation that made the internet possible is the fiber optical cable. Without it, the internet might not have existed at all and if it did, it wouldn’t have been open to everyone and it would have been super slow. While you are reading this webpage, data is travelling all around the world in the blink of an eye to give you access to this website. 4. Microprocessors:Microprocessors were the important bit of link that led to the development of computers. The computers that existed before microprocessors were huge and slow. Special buildings were built to house just one computer that couldn’t even perform a fraction of the tasks your smart phone performs today. All this shrinkage in size was possible due to the development of the microprocessors. 3. Smart Phones:Mobile phones were a big step in the history of humanity as they changed the way we communicate. It led to globalization and significantly shrunk the world. Smart phones have taken another leap and made it possible for us to not just stay in touch with our loved ones but do all our work, take photographs and shoot HD videos, share them on the internet, play games, watch movies, listen to songs, all while being mobile. 2. Personal Computers:The second most important innovation in the digital world was the personal computer. It started with the desktop and then the laptop came along followed by the tablets and smart phones. These are all versions of the personal computer and it is basically an extension of human brain power and knowledge. We have the world on our fingertips today, literally. 1. Internet:The number one most amazing digital innovation has to be the internet. Without the internet you would still have been reading this article in a magazine or newspaper days or weeks after I wrote it, depending on where you lived in the world. Since I’m a fairly unknown writer most of the world would never have gotten the chance to read this article. But today, as soon as I publish this post, the whole world will be able to access it and read my thoughts. The post 10 Digital Wonders of the World appeared first on TopYaps. |
10 Cool Stuffs Invented By Kids Posted: 01 Nov 2013 10:47 PM PDT Kids have great minds but then they grow up. Everybody has some great ideas as kids but they never focus on them long enough to invent something new. It’s just that kids are creative and have a unique way of looking at problems and finding ingenious solutions. But there are kids who have managed to invent really cool stuff in between all the fun and games. Here is a list of 10 really cool things which were thought up by children. 10. Toy Truck:The toy truck that can be assembled into different vehicles was invented by a 6 year old! Robert Patch came up with the idea in 1963 and got a patent for it. He just wanted something cool to play with and instead of pestering his parents for more toys he just set out to build one for himself. More kids should be like him. 9. Trampoline:George Nissen was a 16 year old gymnast who came up with the idea of building some type of bouncing apparatus to train on in 1930. He built one in 1934 with his coach, Larry Griswold for personal use. In 1937 he went to a Spanish circus and heard the Spanish word, trampolin, and added an e to the end and had the name trademarked. Now the trampoline is a household toy enjoyed by many children and adults. 8. Braille:Louise Braille was born in France in 1809. He was only 3 when he was blinded and went on to study at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris and there he invented the Braille language using raised dots organized in a pattern that can be felt with the fingertips to ‘read’ stuff. He was only 15 years old when he achieved this feat. Today Braille is used by all blind people all around the world. 7. Earmuffs:Chester Greenwood was 15 years old in 1873 when he got sick of skating in the cold and having his ears frozen over. He used two wires and asked his grandmother to sew fur on each end. He soon patented his device as ear protectors. Maine, where he was born celebrates his achievement on 21 December every year on the Chester Greenwood day. 6. Popsicles:The children’s favorite popsicle was invented by 11 years old Frank Epperson in 1905. He was playing around with soda pop powder and mixing his own flavors. One night he left a glass of soda pop out on the porch with a mixing stick in it. In the morning the soda had frozen and he got the idea for a new kind of ice cream. He patented his idea in 1924 and originally called in Epsicle but later changed it to Popsicle. 5. Television:Yes, that’s right, the television was thought up by a 14 years old kid. Philo Fransworth thought up the whole thing in 1920 while plowing a potato field. In 1926 he founded Crocker Research Laboratories to research and develop the first television. He later named his company, Fransworth Radio and Television Corporation. 4. Snow Mobile:Is there anything cooler than a snow mobile? I don’t think so and this really cool invention was thought up by 15 years old, Joseph Armand Bombardier from Canada. He took his father’s Ford Model T motor and attached it to a sled. 15 years later he started selling the B-7, the first ever snow mobile. 3. The Sign Language Translator:In more recent years, 17 years old, Ryan Patterson saw a sign language translator help place an order at Burger King on the behalf of a group of deaf people. He got inspired and developed a glove that senses the sign language being used and translates into English. First he used a display to show the words and later a voice box, technically enabling deaf and mutes to speak. He won a $400,000 scholarship in 2002 and met the President. 2. Problem Pad:Keagon Bolibol was 11 years old in 2007 when she was facing a problem. She was too messy with her math work and so started using a dry erase board to solve the problems before copying them down in her notebook. The next problem was that she couldn’t take the whole board to school with her, so she cut up a piece that fit perfectly into her binder and the problem pad was born. She entered Staples’ Invention Quest contest with her design and won. 1. Urine Analysis for Cancer Screening:Most of these inventions are related to stuff used by kids but 15 years old Ben Song and his 16 years old sister, Janet Song, came up with a painless way to screen for cancer by using urine analysis in 2010. Now both of them are working in Drexel University’s Labs to improve their concepts and have applied for a patent. The post 10 Cool Stuffs Invented By Kids appeared first on TopYaps. |

6 Wars That Were Won By The Underdogs Posted: 01 Nov 2013 09:50 PM PDT If you liked 300 then you’ll love the stories on this list because underdogs are loved by everyone. It gives us hope when a David defeats a Goliath that maybe we too can achieve big things despite our lack of talent and resources. We feel that maybe just our passion and willpower will be enough to carry us to victory. It’s not impossible as we have seen time and again in history. Here are some such stories where the smaller force won great wars. 6. Tigranocerta:Tigranes was an Armenian king who ruled the great land of Armenia in 69 BC. The Romans didn’t like him because he wasn’t Roman and wanted to defeat him so they sent a force of just 10,000 troops under the general Lucullus. He was very confident despite the fact that Tigranes had a force of about 300,000. He knew that most of Tigranes army was made up of peasants who were not trained in the art of war while his 10,000 troops were professional soldiers who had been trained to follow orders, kill and win wars. He went head on into the Armenian army and went for their strongest point, a hill, and captured it. The undisciplined Armenians had no chance and most of the soldiers just scattered and ran away in panic. Who were left on the field were slaughtered by the Romans. 5. Battle of Watling Street:In 61 AD, the Roman Empire had just conquered Britain. The Britons got together and decided to fight back. The Roman Governor Gaius Paulinus only had two legions which totaled to 10,000 men while the local Britons were 80,000 strong. But the Romans knew war like no other and knew how strategy could help them win. So they assembled in a narrow field that had forests on either side. It created a funnel into which the unwise Britons went one after the other only to get slaughtered. Because of the funnel, the Britons had to wait for their chance to even get close to the Roman shields and as soon as they got there, they were hacked by spears and swords. In the end the Britons had to retreat but were blocked off by their own wagons that they had placed at the end of the field in a line. It was a slaughter. 4. Klushino:In 1610, long before Poland got invaded by multiple forces, it decided to do some invading and land grabbing of its own. It decided to strike at the city of Smolensk in Sweden. 30,000 Swedish and Russian soldiers marched to save Smolensk and were faced with 5,500 Polish cavalry men in the village of Klushino. The Swedish/Russian cavalry had upgraded to guns instead of swords and their strategy was to charge up the enemy, fire their one shot and then turn back to reload their guns while the next wave came in. The Polish had swords and didn’t have to waste time reloading anything. What followed was a massacre in which the crazed Polish cavalry hacked its way through the Swedish/Russian army which was busy reloading and in the end they had to surrender. 3. Malta:In 1565, long after the crusades, the Knights Hospitaller occupied Malta and continued to attack Muslim ships that plied in the Mediterranean. Sick of this annoying little force of 10,000 men the Ottomans sent a force of 50,000 to besiege Malta. The Knights defended the castle till the Ottomans broke through. When the Ottomans entered through the tiny breach in the wall, they were met by a few hundred knights who had been waiting for this very opportunity. For the next four months the Ottomans tried to enter through the breach and each time just got hacked down at the bottleneck. In the end they lost 10,000 men and the Christians received reinforcements forcing the Ottomans to give up and go home. 2. Narva:Narva was the gateway to the Baltic under the Swedes and the Russians wanted it all costs. In 1703 the Russians decided to attack that area to get a port on the Baltic. Peter the Great from Russia sent 35,000 troops and surrounded Narva. Emperor Charles of Sweden sent just 8000 men but he had the weather on his side. A blizzard forced both forces to sit tight and wait till it blew over but in the afternoon the Swedes realized that the wind was blowing right into the Russians and that they were effectively blinded by the snow. The 8000 strong Swedish army surprised the Russian army which wasn’t expecting any attacks till the storm was over. They killed 15,000 men and captured the rest. 1. Myeongnyang Strait:The Japanese navy was very strong and in 1590 they were causing havoc in Korea and China during the Imjin War. By 1597 they had destroyed all of Korean navy except for 13 badly wrecked ships. The Japanese arrived with 330 ships and tried to invade Korea once again. The admiral, Yi Sun-shin of Korea gathered his 13 ships and placed them strategically at Myeongnyand Strait which was very narrow. The Japanese fleet was of no use in this narrow strait. As they tried to enter the 13 Korean ships blew the hell out of them with their cannons. In the end the Japanese lost 33 ships and 8,000 men and 90 more ships were badly damaged and they had no choice but to retreat.
